The 1996 Stafford rail crash occurred on 8 March 1996 when a Transrail freight train travelling from Mossend, North Lanarkshire, to Willesden, North London, derailed after an axle on a wagon carrying liquid carbon dioxide failed due to fatigue at Rickerscote 1.4 miles (2.2 km) south of Stafford on the West Coast Main Line. Almost immediately after the derailment, a Travelling Post Office mail train hauled by a Rail Express Systems British Rail Class 86 electric locomotive (no 86239) collided with a section of the derailed freight train on the adjacent line and fouled the path of the TPO mail train. One person, a mail sorter, was killed in the crash and twenty others including the driver of the mail train were injured.The cause of the collision was the failure of an axle on one of the tanker wagons of the freight train. It caused the wagon and adjacent ones to derail, into the path of the closely approaching mail train, which was travelling at 60 mph (97 km/h). The driver of the mail train had no time to brake and the force of the collision spun the locomotive around and catapulted it up the embankment, where it came to rest against the end wall of a house.The liquid carbon dioxide formed into a gas as it was no longer under pressure and interfered with the rescue effort. One bystander who had gone to help was later found unconscious after suffering the inhalation effects of carbon dioxide. The rescue services were on the scene within four minutes of being notified, despite the signaller at Stafford having to relay the emergency information via another office because the crash had cut his external phone lines, but he was able to phone his supervisor at Crewe.The fire service on site were given the wrong staffing list for the mail train - they had been given a manifest for the number of mail workers who would have been on the train northbound after leaving Crewe. However, the ambulance service were given a correct head count list from the Royal Mail workers at the lineside.During the investigation, it was discovered that the wagon had travelled 69,000 miles (111,000 km) since its last inspection. The recommendation at the time was that wagons were tested every 24,000 miles (39,000 km).

St Austin's Church is a Roman Catholic parish church in Stafford, Staffordshire, England. It was built from 1861 to 1862 and designed by E. W. Pugin in the Gothic Revival style. It is located on Wolverhampton Road to the south of the town centre. It was later added to by Peter Paul Pugin and it is a Grade II listed building.

The Blessed William Howard Catholic School is a mixed secondary school and sixth form located in Stafford, Staffordshire, England.The school was originally opened in 1963. The name Blessed William Howard comes from the site on which the school is located. William Howard was the 1st Viscount of Stafford in the 17th century, and owned the land on which the current school is built. He was convicted of treason and executed in 1680, wrongly so, as it is viewed by the Roman Catholic Church. The Church therefore beatified him in 1929, and he became known as Blessed William Howard. Thus the school is named eponymously.Blessed William Howard was previously a voluntary aided school administered by Staffordshire County Council, and gained specialist Arts College status in 2003. In March 2016 the school was converted to academy status, however Blessed William Howard continues to coordinate with Staffordshire County Council for admissions. The school continues to be under the guidance of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Birmingham. The sixth form provision forms part of the Stafford Collegiate which includes all Stafford secondary schools and Stafford College.

King Edward VI High School is a coeducational secondary school and sixth form located in the Highfields area of Stafford, England. The school's sixth form forms part of the Stafford Collegiate. It is a non-selective state school admitting boys and girls from ages 11–18. The school was formed in 1977 following the amalgamation of King Edward VI Boys’ Grammar School and Stafford Girls’ High School.

Hyde Lea is a village and parish in Staffordshire, England, just west of Stafford itself. Hyde Lea borders the southern boundary of Castle Church parish. It is made up of a detached strip of land between Thorneyfields Lane and Burton Manor. The small village became part of Castle Church parish in 1881. By the time of the 2011 census Hyde Lea had become a civil parish in its own name. The population as of the 2011 census was 451.'The Hyde' was mentioned as far back as the Domesday Book. By 1788 Hyde Lea common was ringed by small encroachments and by about 1840 there were a few cottages there, several dating from the late 18th century. Hyde Lea boasted a school from 1863, but it closed in 1980, children only staying there between the ages of 5 and 7 by this time. The village hall site is now owned by the trustees (the community). In the 1980s the Diocese allowed the community to use the school as a village hall on licence until the trustees purchased it in the early 1990s.It contains a Scheduled Monument in the form of a moated site and fishpond used for water management at the head of the valley of Rising Brook.Stafford Grammar School is within the parish.

The Chetwynd Centre is an extension of the six Stafford high schools and Stafford College. The Centre provides a range of courses not otherwise offered by the Stafford Collegiate. Students who study at the Centre still belong to their School Sixth Form or Stafford College. The Chetwynd Centre is part of the Stafford CollegiateThe Chetwynd Centre is located in Stafford Town Centre in the old King Edward VI Grammar School building, on the Newport Road which therefore facilitates easy access to both main libraries and close proximity to local businesses/organisations that are useful to students' studies. The Chetwynd Centre building, the War Memorial at the Chetwynd Centre and the Gates at the Chetwynd Centre are each Grade-II listed structures.The Chetwynd Centre is now closed and has been offered for sale.

The train crash at Stafford, England on 4 August 1990 resulted in the death of a train driver and injuries to 36 people. The 11:36 pm empty coaching stock train from Stoke-on-Trent to Birmingham Soho TMD ran into the rear of the 10:18 pm express passenger train from Manchester Piccadilly to Penzance, which was standing in platform 4 at Stafford station. The empty train was signalled to draw up behind the express in order to clear the way for another train.The driver of the empty train, who was the only fatality, was considered not to have kept a good lookout. This was possibly compounded by excessive working hours and by the alcohol that was subsequently found in his bloodstream.The Rule Book was changed to avoid this situation. Now if a train is to be signalled into an occupied section and that train is not booked to call at that location, the driver must be first advised. Also before a train can be signalled behind another, the signal ahead of the stationary train must be at danger until the second train has come to a stand, to avoid potential 'over-reading' of the signal by the second driver.
