Lima ( LEE-mə; Spanish pronunciation: [ˈlima]), originally founded as Ciudad de Los Reyes (City of The Kings) is the capital and largest city of Peru. It is located in the valleys of the Chillón, Rímac and Lurín Rivers, in the desert zone of the central coastal part of the country, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Together with the seaside city of Callao, it forms a contiguous urban area known as the Lima Metropolitan Area. With a population of more than 9.7 million in its urban area and more than 11 million in its metropolitan area, Lima is one of the largest cities in the Americas. Lima was named by natives in the agricultural region known by native Peruvians as Limaq. It became the capital and most important city in the Viceroyalty of Peru. Following the Peruvian War of Independence, it became the capital of the Republic of Peru (República del Perú). Around one-third of the national population now lives in its metropolitan area. The city of Lima is considered to be the political, cultural, financial and commercial center of Peru. Lima is home to one of the oldest institutions of higher learning: the National University of San Marcos, founded on 12 May 1551, is the first officially established and the oldest continuously functioning university in the New World. Lima is also one of the thirty most populated urban agglomerations in the world. Due to its geostrategic importance, the Globalization and World Cities Research Network has categorized it as a "beta" tier city. Jurisdictionally, the metropolis extends mainly within the province of Lima and in a smaller portion, to the west, within the Constitutional Province of Callao, where the seaport and the Jorge Chávez Airport are located. Both provinces have regional autonomy since 2002. In October 2013, Lima was chosen to host the 2019 Pan American Games; these games were held at venues in and around Lima, and were the largest sporting event ever hosted by the country. It also hosted the APEC Meetings of 2008 and 2016, the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group in October 2015, the United Nations Climate Change Conference in December 2014, and the Miss Universe 1982 contest.

The Lima International Exhibition (Exposicion Internacional de 1872) was held in the Park of the Exposition, Lima, in 1872 to attract foreign investment, demonstrate Peru's progress and to mark fifty years since Peru's independence

The Palacio de la Exposición is a building on Colon Avenue in downtown Lima, Peru. It was constructed in the 19th century with the Park of the Exposition to house the International Exposition of Lima in 1872. Since 1957, it has been home to the Lima Art Museum.

The Lima Art Museum (Museo de Arte de Lima) is an art museum in Lima, Peru. The museum is located in the Palacio de la Exposición. The museum was inaugurated in 1961. The collection includes ceramics and textiles. MALI is a private organization supported by admission fees, contributions from members, and private donations.In 2015, the museum opened its renovated galleries on the second floor of the Exhibition Palace, showcasing some of the collection's most important items. These galleries survey almost 3,000 years of history, from pre-Columbian textiles and pottery, to mid-twentieth century painting. The museum's contemporary art collection, numbering more than 1,000 works, is still largely kept in storage pending the development of a new wing.The museum has been involved in the development of new research on Peruvian art history, housing one of the most extensive art archives in the region. The MALI has an active program of temporary exhibitions throughout the year, covering local and international artists. Past exhibitions have included Gordon Matta Clark, Milagros de la Torre, Martin Creed, Gerhard Richter, Wolfgang Tilmans, Martin Chambi, Annie and Josef Albers, Francis Alÿs, Fernando Bryce, Marcel Odenbach, Jorge Eduardo Eielson, among others.

The Institute of Hygiene (Spanish: Instituto Municipal de Higiene) is a building located at the Paseo Colón of Lima, Peru. Located next to the Park of the Exhibition, its design was inspired by the pavilion built by Peru for the 1900 Paris Exhibition, and currently houses the Centre for Military Historical Studies (Spanish: Centro de Estudios Histórico Militares del Perú, CEHMP).

It is located at the intersection of the Paseo de la República with the Paseo Colón, Miguel Grau Avenue and the Paseo de los Héroes Navales. It was named in honor of Miguel Grau Seminario, commander of the Huáscar monitor during the War of the Pacific.

The Casa Tenaud, also known as the Palacio Tenaud or as the Palacete Tenaud, was a building located at the intersection of today's Grau Avenue and the Paseo de la República, in Lima, Peru. The building was burned down on December 7, 1945, due to it being the location of the offices of the Revolutionary Union political party, including that of its leader, Luis A. Flores.
