The Birmingham Battery and Metal Company was founded in 1836 with a factory in Digbeth, Birmingham. The company did not make batteries, but the use of the word battery in the name refers to a method of metal production and forming (which had largely been supplanted by metal rolling using steam power).

Selly Oak is an industrial and residential area in south-west Birmingham, England. The area gives its name to Selly Oak ward and includes the neighbourhoods of: Bournbrook, Selly Park, and Ten Acres. The adjoining wards of Edgbaston and Harborne are to the north of the Bourn Brook, which was the former county boundary, and to the south are Weoley, and Bournville. A district committee serves the four wards of Selly Oak, Billesley, Bournville and Brandwood. Selly Oak is connected to Birmingham by the Pershore Road (A441) and the Bristol Road (A38). The Worcester and Birmingham Canal and the Birmingham Cross-City Railway Line run across the Local District Centre. The 2001 population census recorded 25,792 people living in Selly Oak, with a population density of 4,236 people per km2 compared with 3,649 people per km2 for Birmingham. It had 15.9% of the population consisting of ethnic minorities compared with 29.6% for Birmingham in general. As the University of Birmingham is nearby, there are many students in the area.

Fircroft College is a specialist adult residential college based in Selly Oak, Birmingham, England. The college was founded by George Cadbury Junior, son of George Cadbury Senior, in 1908 and offers over 150 short residential courses throughout the year, most of which last three days. Fircroft was founded with a strong ethos of social justice which continues to this day, with many learners coming to Fircroft with no or few prior qualifications. The short course programme covers subject areas such as English, Maths, ICT, Gardening, Personal and Social Development, Counselling and Mentoring. These courses are aimed at helping adults improve their skills and confidence and work towards reaching their own personal or work goals. The college also runs a number of professional short courses and qualifications aimed at adults working or involved in the voluntary and community sectors. As well as the short course programme, there is a 30-week Access to Higher Education programme for adults wishing to progress to university - this course has non-residential as well as residential places available. Fircroft College is located in George Cadbury Junior's family home, originally called Primrose Hill, set in six acres (24,000 m2) of gardens and woodland. An adjoining teaching centre housing a new library, conference rooms, IT facilities and teaching rooms was opened in 2005. The college uses these facilities to host a number of conferences, training events, meetings, away days and team building sessions during the course of the year. Fircroft was rated as an ‘outstanding’ college by Ofsted in its last inspection and has also been awarded Beacon Status in recognition of its academic excellence. It was federated with eight other nearby colleges, known collectively as Selly Oak Colleges.

University of Birmingham School is a mixed free school that occupies a new, purpose-built building located on the University of Birmingham's Selly Oak campus. The University of Birmingham School opened in September 2015, and is sponsored by the University of Birmingham and managed by an Academy Trust. The university obtained twenty million pounds for the school's building, but later supplemented this with three million pounds of its own money to pay for expanded features such as wider corridors and very large classrooms. The curriculum includes a commitment to teaching virtue and empathy as part of curricular as well as extra-curricular activities.In 2016, the school had 1768 applications for 150 places, and was considering expanding its intake.
