Portage Township was one of the sixteen original townships in Summit County, Ohio. It was located in the middle of Summit County. It included the cities/towns of Akron and Cuyahoga Falls as well as an earlier part of Middlebury. Eventually, the township was absorbed by Akron and Cuyahoga Falls and ceased to exist. When created, it was in area and included Survey Town 2, Range 11 in Western Reserve. The township derived its name from the Portage Path, which extends north to south through the middle of the township.

The Akron Zoo, officially known as the Akron Zoological Park, is a non-profit zoo located just west of downtown in Akron, Ohio, United States. The zoo sits on 77-acre (31 ha) of which 35-acre (14 ha) are occupied with by habitats, amenities, and support. The Akron Zoo is home to over 1,000 animals representing over 100 different species and it has around 400,000 visitors annually. The zoo is the most visited attraction in Summit County. The Akron Zoo is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) since 1989. As an AZA member, Akron Zoo participates in breeding programs to save endangered species. The zoo is also a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums and of the American Public Gardens Association.

I Promise School (IPS) is a public elementary school in Akron, Ohio. Opened in 2018, it is supported by the LeBron James Family Foundation and specifically aimed at at-risk children. Opening with students attending grades three and four, the school became fully operational in 2022, teaching grades one through eight.In April 2020, a documentary series titled I Promise was released on the streaming service Quibi, detailing the school's first year of operations. The series was cancelled due to Quibi's shutdown in October 2020.

Cleveland Clinic Akron General is a part of the Cleveland Clinic Health System. As the hospital is a teaching hospital, it is affiliated with the Northeast Ohio Medical University and the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. The hospital is also an American College of Surgeons verified Level I Trauma Center, the one of two in the region and one of 11 in Ohio. Additionally, the hospital has a rooftop helipad to handle the emergent transport of critical patients to and from the hospital.

South High School was a public high school in the Akron Public Schools that served the city of Akron, Ohio, from 1911 until its closure at the end of the 1979–80 school year. School colors were blue and white and athletic teams were known as the Cavaliers or Big Blue. They competed in the Akron City Series for their entire existence.
