SS Heimara (sometimes spelled as Himara or Chimara, Greek: Χειμάρρα) was a passenger steamer operating the Piraeus – Thessaloniki route. The ship hit a reef and sank on 19 January 1947 in the Aegean Sea, killing around 400 people. It is Greece's deadliest maritime disaster.

Rhamnous (Ancient Greek: Ῥαμνοῦς, romanized: Rhamnoûs; Modern Greek: Ραμνούς, romanized: Ramnoús), also Ramnous or Rhamnus, was an ancient Greek city in Attica situated on the coast, overlooking the Euboean Strait. Its ruins lie northwest of the modern town of Agia Marina in the municipality of Marathon. The site was best known in antiquity for its sanctuary of Nemesis, the implacable avenging goddess, her most important in ancient Greece. Rhamnous is the best-preserved Attic deme site. It was strategically significant on the sea routes and was fortified with an Athenian garrison of ephebes (young men). A fortified acropolis dominates the two small harbours located on either side of it which have silted up extensively since antiquity, and into which grain was imported for Athens during the Peloponnesian War. It derived its name from Buckthorn, a thick prickly shrub, which still grows upon the site.

Kato Souli Naval Transmission Facility (Greek: Κέντρο Εκπομπής Κάτω Σουλίου) is a facility used by the Greek Navy for transmitting messages to submarines in the Low Frequency range at Kato Souli near Marathon, Greece. It was commissioned in 1989 and uses as its tallest antenna tower a 250-metre-tall guyed mast with an umbrella antenna, the tallest structure in Greece. The site has an area of 260 ha (650 acres). Nearby there was a transmission site of the US Navy with several shortwave transmitters.

The Schinias Olympic Rowing and Canoeing Centre (Ολυμπιακό Κωπηλατοδρόμιο Σχοινιά) was built to host the rowing and canoe sprint events at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Greece. It is the most northerly venue of the 2004 Games situated to the east of the town of Marathon. It covers 1.24 km2 and has a spectator capacity of 14,000. It is a part of Schinias National Park. Although not fully completed until January 31, 2004, it held its first successful competition, the World Rowing Junior Championships, in August 2003. During these championships, many boats became waterlogged due to gale-force winds and the resulting water conditions. Most of the final rounds were raced over a shortened course to avoid worse water in the second half of the 2 km lake. During construction there was controversy over environmental destruction as wetlands were remodelled for its construction. The centre is one of only three FISA-approved training centers in the world, the others being in Munich and Seville. It hosts domestic rowing and canoeing meetings, and has hosted the 2008 European Rowing Championships in September 2008. After the 2004 Olympics, the facility was completely reconstructed by the German company Hochtief.

Tricorythus or Trikorythos (Ancient Greek: Τρικόρυθος) or Tricorynthus or Trikorynthos (Τρικόρυνθος) or Tricorinthus or Trikorinthos (Τρικόρινθος) was a deme of ancient Athens, in the plain of Marathon in northeast Attica. It along with Oenoe, Marathon, and Probalinthus, formed the Attic Tetrapolis, one of the twelve districts into which Attica was divided before the time of Theseus. The plain near Tricorythus was where the right of the Persian army were forced into the marsh during the Battle of Marathon. The site of Tricorythus is located northeast of Kato Souli.

Helios Airways Flight 522 was a scheduled passenger flight from Larnaca, Cyprus, to Prague, Czech Republic, with a stopover in Athens, Greece. Shortly after take-off on 14 August 2005, air traffic control (ATC) lost contact with the aircraft operating the flight, named Olympia; it eventually crashed near Grammatiko, Greece, killing all 121 passengers and crew on board. It is the deadliest aviation accident in Greek history. An investigation into the crash by the Air Accident Investigation and Aviation Safety Board (AAIASB) concluded that the crew had failed to notice that the pressurization system was set to manual during the take-off checks. A ground engineer had set it to manual to conduct testing and neglected to restore it to automatic afterward. This caused the airplane to gradually depressurize as it climbed and resulted in nearly everyone on board suffering from generalized hypoxia, thus resulting in a "ghost flight". The negligent nature of the accident led to lawsuits being filed against Helios Airways and Boeing, with the airline also being shut down by the Government of Cyprus the following year.

Eitea (Ancient Greek: Εἰτέα) was a deme of ancient Attica, of the phyle of Antiochis. Its site is located near modern Grammatiko.

Grammatiko (Greek: Γραμματικό) is a village in East Attica, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Marathon, of which it is a municipal unit. It is part of the Athens metropolitan area.

On the afternoon of 11 August 2024, a wildfire fire hit the northeastern Attica region of Greece. The fire broke out in the area of Varnavas, northeast of Athens, at 3:02 PM, according to Fire Colonel Vassileios Vathrakogiannis, the Fire Service spokesman and quickly spread due to strong winds. The flames caused the evacuation of many settlements and caused severe damage to homes and forest lands. The fire continues to burn, affecting significant parts of northeastern Attica and threatening the northern districts of Athens. The fire spread southward and burned on three fronts, including the village of Grammatiko, the town of Marathon, the seaside municipality of Nea Makri and Mount Penteli. Another blaze in a forested area near the town of Megara, west of Athens, started on 11 August, but had been contained by the afternoon of 12 August, according to the fire brigade.

Nea Makri (Greek: Νέα Μάκρη) is a town in East Attica, Greece. Since the local government reform of 2011, it has been a municipal unit within the municipality of Marathon. The municipal unit has an area of 36.662 km2. It is part of the Athens metropolitan area.

Probalinthus or Probalinthos (Ancient Greek: Προβάλινθος) was a deme of ancient Attica, one of the Attic Tetrapolis (along with Marathon, Tricorythus, and Oenoe) located in the plain of Marathon. Probalinthus to the phyle Pandionis.The site of Probalinthus is located southeast of modern Vrana.

The Archeological Museum of Marathon is a museum in Marathon, Attica, Greece. The museum mainly houses findings originating from the Battle of Marathon and from the Egyptian temple built nearby.
