J.B. Brown Memorial Block

The Porteous, Mitchell and Braun Company Building, also known as the Miller Building, is an historic building at 522-28 Congress Street in downtown Portland, Maine. Built in 1904 and enlarged in 1911, it housed Porteou, which was Maine's largest department store for many years. The building is a fine example Renaissance Revival architecture and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. It now houses the primary campus facilities of the Maine College of Art & Design.

The Asa Hanson Block is a historic commercial building at 548-550 Congress Street in Downtown Portland, Maine. It was built in 1889 to a design by local architect Francis Fassett in partnership with Frederick A. Tompson, and is one of a small number of surviving commercial designs by Fassett in the city. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.

The Arts District is a section of downtown Portland, Maine’s designated in 1995 as to promote the cultural community and creative economy of the city. It covers a large part of upper Congress Street towards the West End and spans Congress Street toward the East ending at Portland City Hall and its Merrill Auditorium concert hall.

The Everett Chambers or Hotel Everett is a historic mixed-use commercial and residential building at 47-55 Oak Street in Downtown Portland, Maine. Built in 1902 to a design by local architect Frederick Tompson, it is an important surviving example of a lodging house (in which meals are not provided), built early in the transition period from the 19th century boarding house (in which meals were provided by the proprietor) to more modern 20th-century transient accommodations. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

The Salt Institute for Documentary Studies (or simply Salt) is a non-profit graduate institution located in Portland, Maine, dedicated to the study of nonfiction storytelling, particularly documentary film and podcasting. Originally an independent school, since 2016 it has been part of the Maine College of Art. Salt focuses on educating and promoting responsible storytelling in documentary practices. Salt offers accredited semester programs in radio documentary, documentary photography, or non-fiction writing. Salt alumni have worked on many well-known productions including 99% Invisible, Radiolab, and This American Life. Criminal co-creator Phoebe Judge, novelist Diane Cook, and radio and podcast producer Tina Antolini all attended Salt. The Salt Story Archive, which catalogs the work of Salt students, contains more than 1,300 projects from the school's history.

Maine College of Art & Design (MECA&D) is a private art school in Portland, Maine. Founded in 1882, Maine College of Art & Design is the oldest arts educational institution in Maine. Roughly 32% of MECA&D students are from Maine. The college is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education. In August 2021, the instititution formerly named Maine College of Art changed its name to Maine College of Art & Design to reflect the school's emphasis on design.

The Maine Historical Society is the official historical society of the U.S. state of Maine. It is located at 489 Congress Street in downtown Portland. The Society currently operates the Wadsworth-Longfellow House, a National Historic Landmark, Longfellow Garden, the Maine Historical Society Museum and Store, the Brown Research Library, as well as the Maine Memory Network, an online database of documents and images that includes resources from many of state's local historical societies.

The Museum of African Culture Is a museum in Newfield, Maine, Maine, United States, that specialized in Sub-Saharan African tribal art and culture. Changing exhibits included art inspired by the African diaspora, and the museum's programs included music, storytelling, films, poetry, literature, healing ceremonies and other Sub-Saharan African cultural traditions. Collections included wooden masks, figures, textiles, household objects and tools. It is the only museum in northern New England devoted to African arts and culture and has over 4,500 pieces of art

The Wadsworth-Longfellow House is a historic house and museum in Portland, Maine, United States. It is located at 489 Congress Street and is operated by the Maine Historical Society. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962, and administratively added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. The house is open daily to public from May through October (half days on Sundays). An admission fee is charged.

Congress Street is the main street in Portland, Maine. Around 5.77 miles (9.29 km) long, it stretches from County Road, Portland's southwestern border with Westbrook, through a number of neighborhoods, before ending overlooking the Eastern Promenade on Munjoy Hill. In March 2009, the Portland City Council designated much of the inner portion of Congress Street a historic district. The western section of the street includes the city's Arts District. The street was formerly known as both Country Road and Back Street. West of downtown Portland, the street is known colloquially as Outer Congress Street. Portland City Hall stands at 389 Congress Street, at the head of Exchange Street.

The Charles Shipman Payson Building is the most recent expansion of the Portland Museum of Art (PMA) in Portland, Maine, located on the corner of High Street and Congress Square. Henry N. Cobb (of Pei Cobb Freed & Partners) designed the Payson Building, which introduced over five times more gallery space than in the adjacent, historic PMA buildings (McLellan-Sweat House, Charles Quincy Clapp House, and L. D. M. Sweat Memorial Galleries). The building opened in 1983, after Mr. Payson donated 17 Winslow Homer paintings and ten million dollars to the museum. Similar in theme to these Homer paintings, the Payson building contains a collection of contemporary paintings and short-term exhibitions created by Maine artists, focusing on regional themes.

The Hay Building (also known as the Charles Q. Clapp Building) is an historic commercial building on Congress Square in downtown Portland, Maine. It occupies a prominent triangular site at the junction of Congress, High and Free Streets. Built in 1826 to a design by prominent local architect and merchant Charles Q. Clapp, it is one of the oldest commercial buildings in Portland.
