Spantax Flight 275

On December 3, 1972, a Convair CV-990 Coronado charter flight operated by Spantax from Tenerife to Munich with 148 passengers and 7 crew crashed while taking off from Tenerife-Norte Los Rodeos Airport in Tenerife, killing all 155 passengers and crew onboard. Many of the passengers were West German tourists heading home.

Tenerife North–Ciudad de La Laguna Airport (IATA: TFN, ICAO: GCXO), formerly Los Rodeos Airport, is the smaller of the two international airports on the island of Tenerife, Spain. It is located in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, 11 km (7 mi) by road from Santa Cruz and at an elevation of 633 metres (2,077 ft). It handled 3,717,944 passengers in 2012. Combined with Tenerife South Airport, the island gathers the highest passenger movement of all the Canary Islands, with 12,248,673 passengers, surpassing Gran Canaria Airport. Today TFN is an inter-island hub connecting all seven of the main Canary Islands with connections to the Iberian Peninsula and Europe. In 1977, the airport was the infamous site of the deadliest accident in aviation history, when two Boeing 747s collided on the runway in heavy fog conditions, causing the deaths of 583 passengers and crew.

The Tenerife airport disaster occurred on 27 March 1977, when two Boeing 747 passenger jets collided on the runway at Los Rodeos Airport (now Tenerife North Airport) on the Spanish island of Tenerife. The Incident occurred at 5:06 pm WET (UTC+0) in dense fog, when KLM Flight 4805 initiated its takeoff run, colliding with the right side of Pan Am Flight 1736 still on the runway. The impact and the resulting fire killed all 248 people on board the KLM plane and 335 of the 396 people on board the Pan Am plane, with only 61 survivors in the front section of the latter aircraft. With a total of 583 fatalities, the disaster is the deadliest accident in aviation history. The two aircraft had landed at Los Rodeos earlier that Sunday, and were among a number of aircraft diverted to Los Rodeos due to a bomb explosion at their intended destination of Gran Canaria Airport. The airport had become congested with parked airplanes blocking the only taxiway, forcing departing aircraft to taxi on the runway. Patches of thick fog were drifting across the airfield, so visibility was greatly reduced for pilots and the control tower. The subsequent investigation by Spanish authorities concluded that the primary cause of the accident was the KLM captain's decision to take off in the mistaken belief that a takeoff clearance from air traffic control (ATC) had been issued. Dutch investigators placed a greater emphasis on a mutual misunderstanding in radio communications between the KLM crew and ATC, but ultimately KLM admitted that their crew was responsible for the accident and the airline agreed to financially compensate the relatives of all of the victims. The disaster had a lasting influence on the industry, highlighting in particular the vital importance of using standard phraseology in radio communications. Cockpit procedures were also reviewed, contributing to the establishment of crew resource management as a fundamental part of airline pilots' training. The captain is no longer considered infallible, and combined crew input is encouraged during aircraft operations.

The Iglesia-Parroquia Matriz de Nuestra Señora de La Concepción (Church of the Immaculate Conception) is a Roman Catholic church located in the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna (Canary Islands, Spain). This church is almost a twin of the Church of the Conception of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It was the first parish was established in Tenerife. The site of the church was established by the conqueror Alonso Fernández de Lugo after the celebration of the feast of Corpus Christi in 1496. The Church of the Conception was founded in 1511. Today people can climb the tower to view much of the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna. It houses the largest bell in the Canary Islands. The Church of the Conception was declared of a site of cultural interest, specifically in the category of National Historic Monument in 1948. Inside the temple is the miraculous oil of St. John the Evangelist, the icon miraculously sweat during a Black Death in 1648, after this miracle the disease disappeared from the island. The Church of the Concepción is home to numerous brotherhoods, including the Pontificia, Imperial, Real y Venerable Hermandad de la Purísima Concepción, which in 1757 was added to the Brotherhood of the Immaculate Conception of the Basilica of Saint Lawrence outside the Walls in Rome.Outside the temple next to the entrance door is the Monument to Pope John Paul II, Polish sculptor Czeslaw Dzwigaj representing the pontiff blessed with two children dressed in traditional costumes of the Canary Islands. The statue was brought from Poland and was blessed by the Bishop of Tenerife, Bernardo Álvarez Afonso and the archpriest of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, Santos Abril y Castelló.

The Monument to José de Anchieta in La Laguna, Tenerife, is a monumental statue of Joseph of Anchieta by Bruno Giorgi. Inaugurated in 1960, it is 5 metres tall, and is currently located in the gardens of La Laguna since March 2022, having been moved several times in the past.

The Cathedral of San Cristóbal de La Laguna or Catedral de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios (Santa Iglesia Catedral de San Cristóbal de La Laguna in Spanish) is a Roman Catholic church in Tenerife, Spain. Begun in 1904 and completed in 1915, it is dedicated to the Virgin of Los Remedios (patron of the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Cristóbal de La Laguna and the island of Tenerife). The cathedral is the mother church of the diocese, which includes the islands of Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It is therefore where the episcopal seat of the bishop of this diocese, currently occupied by Bishop Bernardo Álvarez Afonso. This is one of the most important churches of the Canary Islands.The Cathedral of San Cristóbal de La Laguna is located in the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna (Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain). Casa Anchieta is a building in San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife, Canary Islands. Originally constructed in the 16th century, the current building dates from the 17th century with 19th-century modifications. It was the childhood home of Saint Joseph of Anchieta, after whom the building is named. In 2020 the building started to be restored, with the aim of turning it into a museum and interpretation center about José de Anchieta.

Plaza del Cristo de La Laguna is a square in the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna (on the island of Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain). It is one of the largest and most important squares of the Canary Islands. This square is considered one of the "main squares" of the island of Tenerife, together with the Plaza de España in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias in Candelaria.This square until recently marked the boundary between the city of La Laguna and agricultural area. The square was used until the last century as a field of military exercises. In the surroundings of the current square was the historic and disappeared Hospital of San Sebastián, which played an important role in the reception of patients during the epidemic of bubonic plague that broke out in the city in 1582.However, the plaza is known mainly because its banks including Real Santuario del Cristo de La Laguna church, where the venerated image of Cristo de La Laguna, which is highly revered by all canaries. Today in this square is the municipal market.

Real Santuario del Santísimo Cristo de La Laguna (Royal Sanctuary of the Christ of La Laguna) is a Roman Catholic church located in the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna, Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain). The sanctuary is famous for housing the image of the Cristo de La Laguna, a devotional image of the Canary Islands. This temple throughout its history was enriched by the Popes with indulgences which are granted to the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome. Next to the Royal Shrine is the Plaza del Cristo de La Laguna, the largest square of the city.

The International Tenerife Memorial March 27, 1977, erected in memory of the 583 victims of the Tenerife airport disaster, is a monument located on the Mesa Mota on the outskirts of the city of San Cristóbal de La Laguna on the island of Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain). This location has views of Los Rodeos airport (now Tenerife North Airport) and even, on clear days, the silhouette of Mount Teide. The monument was inaugurated on March 27, 2007 (the 30th anniversary of the disaster), in the presence of many relatives of those killed in the accident. It is shaped like a spiral staircase, with steps that connect the earth and sky. The 18-metre-high (59 ft) structure was designed by the Dutch artist Rudi van de Wint.
