Herzogtum Lauenburg (English: Duchy of Lauenburg; German pronunciation: [ˈhɛʁt͡soːktuːm ˈlaʊ̯ənˌbʊʁk] ) is the southernmost Kreis, or district, officially called Kreis Herzogtum Lauenburg (German pronunciation: [kʁaɪ̯s ˈhɛʁt͡soːktuːm ˈlaʊ̯ənˌbʊʁk] ), of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is bordered by (from the west and clockwise) the district of Stormarn, the city of Lübeck, the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (districts of Nordwestmecklenburg and Ludwigslust-Parchim), the state of Lower Saxony (districts of Lüneburg and Harburg), and the city state of Hamburg. The district of Herzogtum Lauenburg is named after the former Duchy of Saxe-Lauenburg.

The Stecknitz Canal (German: Stecknitzfahrt) was an artificial waterway in northern Germany which connected Lauenburg and Lübeck on the Old Salt Route by linking the tiny rivers Stecknitz (a tributary of the Trave) and Delvenau (a tributary of the Elbe), thus establishing an inland water route across the drainage divide from the North Sea to the Baltic Sea. Built between 1391 and 1398, the Stecknitz Canal was the first European summit-level canal and one of the earliest artificial waterways in Europe. In the 1890s the canal was replaced by an enlarged and straightened waterway called the Elbe–Lübeck Canal, which includes some of the Stecknitz Canal's watercourse.The original artificial canal was 0.85 metres (33 in) deep and 7.5 metres (25 ft) wide; the man-made segment ran for 11.5 kilometres (7.1 mi), with a total length of 97 kilometres (60 mi) including the rivers it linked. The canal included seventeen wooden locks (of which the Palmschleuse at Lauenburg still exists) that managed the 13-metre (43 ft) elevation difference between its endpoints and the highest central part, the Delvenaugraben.

Mölln (Lauenburg) station is located in the Mölln in the district of Herzogtum Lauenburg in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. The first station building was opened simultaneously with the Lübeck–Lüneburg railway on 16 October 1851, but was later demolished. The present building was erected in 1899; at the same time the Mölln–Hollenbek railway was built to connect with the Hagenow Land–Bad Oldesloe railway (also known as the Kaiserbahn or "Imperial Railway"). The Mölln–Hollenbek line was closed in 1959. Today only the Lübeck-Lüneburg railway is still in operation.

Hornbeker Mühlenbach is a 7 km (4.3 mi) long stream of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Its spring is near Niendorf an der Stecknitz and after passing a V-shaped valley it reaches its mouth near Hornbek into Elbe–Lübeck Canal. The river is crossing the Old Salt Route at the Mühlendamm. It had special significance because it was part of the Limes Saxoniae since 810, which had been the border between the Abodriti and the Saxons.

The Elbe–Lübeck Canal () (also known as the Elbe–Trave Canal) is an artificial waterway in eastern Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It connects the rivers Elbe and Trave, creating an inland water route across the drainage divide from the North Sea to the Baltic Sea. The canal includes seven locks and runs for a length of 64 kilometres (40 mi) between the cities of Lübeck in the north and Lauenburg in the south by way of the Mölln lakes. The modern canal was built in the 1890s to replace the Stecknitz Canal, a medieval watercourse linking the same two rivers.
