Colchester Garrison

St John's Abbey, also called Colchester Abbey, was a Benedictine monastic institution in Colchester, Essex, founded in 1095. It was dissolved in 1539. Most of the abbey buildings were subsequently demolished to construct a large private house on the site, which was itself destroyed in fighting during the 1648 siege of Colchester. The only substantial remnant is the elaborate gatehouse, while the foundations of the abbey church were only rediscovered in 2010.

It was formed by the merger of two departments, notable for being amongst the first in England in their fields, the Department of Electronic Systems Engineering(1966) and the Department of Computer Science (1966).

Garrison A Cricket Ground is a cricket ground in Colchester, Essex. The first recorded match on the ground was in 1924, when Essex played their first first-class match there against Gloucestershire. Essex played 25 first-class matches there between 1924 and their final first-class match at the ground against Somerset in the 1972 County Championship.In addition, the ground also hosted two List-A matches, the first of which came in the 1970 John Player League when Essex played Yorkshire. The second and final List-A match at the ground came in the 1972 John Player League when Essex played Lancashire.The Garrison A Ground is one of two grounds used by Essex in Colchester, along with the Castle Park Cricket Ground. Essex played at the Garrison A Ground between 1924 and 1931 and from 1969 to 1972. They also played one game there in 1958 when the Castle Park ground was flooded, and in 1966 when the first two days of a match at Castle Park were rained off. The game was transferred to the Garrison A Ground and the third day's play took place there.Used by the Colchester Garrison today, the Army play matches there, with the last recorded match coming in 2008 when the Army played Huntingdonshire there.The ground is currently used by Real Oddies Cricket Club

Colchester Town railway station (formerly St Botolph's) is on the Sunshine Coast Line in the East of England, and is the secondary station serving the city of Colchester, Essex. It is 53 miles 76 chains (86.8 km) from London Liverpool Street. Its three-letter station code is CET. The city's larger station is called Colchester (also known as Colchester North station to distinguish it) and is on the Great Eastern Main Line but is further away from the city centre. The station was opened in 1866 by the Tendring Hundred Railway, a subsidiary of the Great Eastern Railway, as St. Botolph's, after the nearby priory and church that gave their name to this part of the city. It was renamed Colchester Town in 1991. It is currently operated by Greater Anglia, which also runs all trains serving the station. As of 2023 there is only one platform. Since a magistrates court was built the station size has decreased, losing its car park and talks of adding an extra platform have been halted. To the east of the station, Colne Junction is the western extremity of a triangle which gives access towards Colchester station to the west and Hythe station to the east. The curve to the north from Colne Junction to East Gates Junction is sharp, with a continuous check rail which necessitates slow passage.

The district also includes the towns of West Mersea and Wivenhoe and the surrounding rural areas stretching from Dedham Vale on the Suffolk border in the north to Mersea Island in the Colne Estuary in the south. The Playhouse is a Wetherspoon's pub in Colchester, Essex, the building of which was previously The Playhouse Theatre. Originally opened in 1929, the theatre became the A.B.C. in the 1960s, and it was redeveloped into a pub in 1994.

Colchester Town Hall is a municipal building in the High Street in Colchester, Essex, England. The town hall, which is the headquarters of Colchester City Council, is a Grade I listed building.

Colchester Art Society was founded in 1946 by a group of artists who lived in Colchester and the nearby areas, many of whom were also linked to the Colchester School of Art, which is part of Colchester Institute. The aim of the society was and still is the promotion of the visual arts.

The Minories is a Grade II listed building and gardens situated at the east end of High Street in Colchester, Essex, England, near Hollytrees, Gate House and Colchester Castle. It currently houses The Minories Galleries which are no longer run by Colchester School of Art, part of Colchester Institute.

Colchester Castle is a Norman castle in Colchester, Essex, England, dating from the second half of the eleventh century. The keep of the castle is mostly intact and is the largest example of its kind anywhere in Europe, due to its being built on the foundations of the Roman Temple of Claudius, Colchester. The castle endured a three-month siege in 1216, but had fallen into disrepair by the seventeenth century when the curtain walls and some of the keep's upper parts were demolished; its original height is debated. The remaining structure was used as a prison and was partially restored as a large garden pavilion, but was purchased by Colchester Borough Council in 1922. The castle has since 1860 housed Colchester Museum, which has an important collection of Roman exhibits. It is a scheduled monument and a Grade I listed building.
