Emerson High School (Indiana)

William A Wirt Senior High School was a four-year (9-12) public high school of the Gary Community School Corporation in Gary, Indiana. In May 2009 the school announced that after over 70 years, it would finally be closing. As of 2011, the site is used for the Wirt Emerson VPA Academy, a magnet school for the visual and performing arts.

Emerson, also called Downtown East, is a neighborhood in north-central Gary, Indiana. Emerson and Downtown West combine to form what is known as Downtown Gary. It was part of the original plat built by the United States Steel Corporation. Emerson is located east of Broadway, south of the Grand Calumet River, north of Ninth Avenue and west of Interstate 65. As of 2000, it had a population of 3,358. Emerson borders directly on Downtown West to the west but is separated from the Aetna and Pulaski neighborhoods to the east and south by an industrial corridor.Emerson has a large number of vacant lots and abandoned buildings and the lowest number of housing units in the city. About 40% of the houses are owner-occupied. There are 44 new housing units between Fifth and Sixth Avenues. Emerson is served by the Gary Main Post Office. In the past it was served by the now decaying E.A. Spaulding Elementary School and Emerson School for Visual and Performing Arts; both schools now stand vacant. Emerson has two city parks, Buffington Park, Idle Hour Park, and the larger portion of Gateway Park. Gary City Hall is located in Emerson along with the Indiana Department of Social Services building and the Calumet Township Trustee’s office. In 2001 the U.S. Steel Yard baseball stadium was built in an effort to stimulate a rebirth of the downtown. It was built on what was once a blighted section of housing. Its construction was highly controversial. However, it has proven somewhat successful, drawing fans from surrounding communities. In September 2009, the one millionth fan walked into the U.S. Steel Yard. Much of the commercial property along Broadway is now vacant. But there are some newer properties along Fifth Avenue. The neighborhood is served by the Indiana Toll Road directly to its north, which has exits at Broadway and Fifth Avenue; by Interstate 65 to the east, which has an exit on Fifth Avenue; and by US 12/20, also to the north. Public transportation is provided by Gary Public Transportation Corporation, with buses running along Broadway and Fifth Avenue.

U.S. Steel Yard is an open-air baseball stadium located in Gary, Indiana next to I-90 in the city's Emerson neighborhood. It is home to the Gary SouthShore RailCats, a professional baseball team and member of the American Association. It seats 6,139 people. It also hosts many Little League Baseball games as well as high school baseball games. The ballpark is notable for holding a memorial service for the late pop musician and Gary native Michael Jackson on July 10, 2009, that was attended by over 6,000 fans, with much of Jackson's family in attendance. The ballpark has had over 2 million fans in attendance during the RailCats' team history.

Gary Land Company Building, also known as Gary's First Town Hall, is a historic building located at Gary, Indiana. It was built in 1906, and is a 1+1⁄2-story, balloon frame building with a cross-gable roof. It measures about 20 feet wide and 40 feet deep. It was converted to a residence in 1909 and moved to its present site in 1956. It was the first building in Gary, it has functioned as a city hall, post office, school, and business building.: 2–3  The building currently serves as an historical museum and visitor's bureau for school tour groups and visitors to the City of Gary.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Gary Middle College is a free public 9-12 charter school in Gary, Indiana. Gary Middle College is part of the GEO Foundation. The school has been opened since Fall 2011.Other schools associated with the GEO Foundation are Fall Creek Academy, Fountain Square Academy, 21st Century Charter School of Gary, and Pikes Peak Prep.

Gary City Center Historic District is a national historic district located at Gary, Indiana. The district encompasses 60 contributing buildings and 2 contributing sites in Downtown Gary. It developed between about 1906 and 1944 includes notable examples of Tudor Revival, Late Gothic Revival, and Classical Revival style architecture. Notable buildings include the City Hall and Superior Courthouse (1927), the second Gary Land Company Building (c. 1907), Olympic Hotel (c. 1928), the "Modern Apartments" (c. 1929), Dalton Apartments (c. 1929), Gary State Bank Building (1929), Hotel Gary (1926), City Methodist Church (1926, ruined), YWCA Building (1922), and former U.S. Post Office Building (1936).It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

The City Methodist Church, latterly known as City United Methodist Church is a disused church in Gary, Indiana. Once the largest Methodist church in the Midwest, it ceased as a place of worship in 1975 after a relatively brief life of just over 50 years.

21st Century Charter School of Gary is a public K-12 charter school in Gary, Indiana, United States. It is authorized by and accountable to Ball State University.

Union Station is a former union railway station in Gary, Indiana. It is located between the elevated lines of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway and Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and is just north of the Indiana Toll Road. Indiana Landmarks has placed the building on its 10 Most Endangered Places in Indiana list. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Downtown West, is a neighborhood in north-central Gary, Indiana. Emerson and Downtown West combine to form what is known as Downtown Gary. As of 2000, Downtown West had a population of 4,684. Downtown West borders Emerson to the east, Ambridge Mann to the west, and Midtown to the south.The Downtown West neighborhood, like Emerson, suffers from extensive vacant lots and abandoned buildings. About 36% of the housing stock are owner-occupied. The Adam Benjamin Metro Center is located just north of 4th Avenue. It is operated by the Gary Public Transportation Corporation and acts as a multimodal hub. Downtown West is served by the Gary Main Post Office and Jefferson Elementary School. The neighborhood has three parks Jackson Park, Borman Square and Rees Park. Pierce Playground, and the smaller portion of Gateway are also located within Downtown West. The Lake County Superior Courthouse is located in Downtown West along with the Gary Police Department, the Gary Housing Authority offices and the Main Branch of the Gary Public Library. The Genesis Convention Center is located along Broadway and 5th Avenue. It formerly hosted professional basketball. It now host events and concerts. Much of the commercial property along Broadway and Washington Street is now vacant. The neighborhood is served by the Indiana Toll Road directly to its north, which has exits at Broadway and Grant and by US 12/20 also to the north. Public transportation is provided by the buses of the Gary Public Transportation Corporation, which run along Broadway and 5th Avenue.
