Overwater Hall

Over Water is a small lake or tarn in the north of the English Lake District, southwest of the hamlet of Longlands. Binsey, Great Cockup and Longlands Fell overlook the lake. Over Water was a small natural waterbody which was dammed in 1904 to increase its size. It served as a reservoir supplying drinking water to the town of Wigton until October 2022. Over Water supports a range of flora including water lilies and water lobelia. The name of the tarn has changed over time. It was recorded as 'Orre Water' in 1687, which derives from the Old Norse which means 'the lake where blackcock or grouse are found' or 'Orri's lake' ...ON 'orri' is a bird of the grouse family, but hence also a nickname and pers.[onal] n.[ame]." While there are public footpaths in the area, there is no public access to the lake itself as it is Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The lake is owned by the National Trust, while the shore is privately owned by a number of different landowners. It is notable for being a feeding place for the Ospreys which breed beside Bassenthwaite Lake. Ospreys are still extremely rare breeding birds in England. There is an official Osprey viewpoint at Dodd Wood in the locality.

Uldale is a small village and former civil parish in the Cumberland district, in the ceremonial county of Cumbria, England. It is about 5 miles (8 km) from Caldbeck, 2 miles (3 km) from Ireby with which it now forms the civil parish of Ireby and Uldale together with Aughertree. The Uldale Fells are in the vicinity, and to the southeast are Chapelhouse Reservoir and Over Water. It is located just inside the Lake District National Park. In 1931 the parish had a population of 217. Uldale has a place in literature as the occasional home of Judith Paris, a heroine of the Herries Chronicles, the saga of a Cumbrian family written by Hugh Walpole in the 1930s.

Ireby and Uldale is a civil parish in the Cumberland district, in the ceremonial of Cumbria, England. The parish includes Aughertree, High Ireby, Ireby, Longlands, Orthwaite, Ruthwaite and Uldale. The population, including neighbouring Bewaldeth and Snittlegarth at the 2011 Census was 458. Part of the parish lies within the Skiddaw Group SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest).

Bassenthwaite is a village and civil parish to the east of Bassenthwaite Lake in Cumbria, historically part of Cumberland, within the Lake District National Park, England. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 412, increasing to 481 at the 2011 Census. There is a Church of England Church, St John's Bassenthwaite and a tiny Methodist chapel. The village contains many elements of the archetypal English village including a green, primary school and a stream that runs through it. Bassenthwaite is at the foot of Skiddaw, one of the highest mountains in England at 3,054 feet (931 m). Robin Hood, Skiddaw, Ullock Pike, Longside Edge and Barf can be seen from the village. Part of the parish lies within the Skiddaw Group SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest).

St Bega's Way is a 36-mile (58 km) walk through rural West Cumbria and the north west corner of the English Lake District. It is usually completed as a leisure walk over 3 days, but has also been used as the basis of a single day competitive Ultramarathon.

Binsey is a hill on the northern edge of the Lake District in Cumbria, England. It is detached from the rest of the Lakeland hills, and thus provides a good spot to look out at the Northern and North Western Fells of the Lake District, as well as the coastal plain and, across the Solway Firth, Scotland. Snaefell on the Isle of Man is also visible on a clear day. It is the northernmost of the Wainwrights.

High Ireby is a hamlet in the civil parish of Ireby and Uldale, in the Cumberland district, in the ceremonial county of Cumbria, England. It is 15 miles from Carlisle.

Far Cotton and Delapre is a civil parish in the West Northamptonshire district, in the ceremonial county of Northamptonshire, England. It comprises the two villages of Far Cotton and Delapre. In 2021 the parish had a population of 12,209.

Aughertree ( AF-ər-tree) is a village in northern Cumbria, England. It is situated near to the villages of Caldbeck and Torpenhow, but closer to the main local centre Ireby and is in the parish of Ireby and Uldale. There are at least three Iron Age settlements on the nearby fell, a Neolithic causeway along with several burial mounds that have been extensively excavated in earlier centuries but without sufficient recording or controls. It used to be a much larger village with several taverns or pubs but none now remain. Some sites of former houses and farms can be seen but these are long gone. A historic funeral road to Uldale Old Church starts in the hamlet and follows a footpath and bridleway.

Chapel is a hamlet in the English county of Cumbria. Chapel is located on the A591 road between Bassenthwaite and Bassenthwaite Lake. The Cumbria Way crosses the main road at Chapel. Today it is a beautiful camping site and national park.

The Dash Valley is a small valley in the English Lake District. It has only one dwelling, Dash Farm, the fields of which spread right across the valley. The valley is flanked on the northern side by Great Cockup, and on the southern side by Bakestall, part of the Skiddaw massif. At the head of the valley Dash Beck, the river which flows through the valley, falls dramatically forming Dash Falls (aka Whitewater Dash), which Wainwright called the finest succession of falls in the Lake District. A private road leads up the valley to Dash Farm, and a track branches off this and goes all the way up the valley, past Dash Falls to Skiddaw House, a former shepherd's hut now used as a youth hostel. The upper part of the valley is in the Skiddaw Group SSSI.
