Ten Putte Abbey (also known as the Saint Godelina Abbey) is a monastery with an abbey in Gistel, roughly 8 km (5 miles) to the south of Ostend, in the western part of Belgium. It was built to mark the spot where, in 1070, Saint Godelina was murdered by strangulation and then thrown into a pond. Before 2007 the abbey was home to nine Benedictine nuns, who were members of the wider Subiaco Cassinese Congregation in West Flanders. Since 2007 it has been occupied by brothers and sisters of the "Mother of Peace" community.Parts of the abbey are sometimes open to visitors including the pond, which has been enclosed as a well, the dungeon where Godelina is said to have been incarcerated, the chapel in which she is believed to have performed a miracle, the Abbey Church and a small recently renovated museum concerning the saint.

Moere

Moere is a small village located within the municipality of Gistel in West Flanders, Belgium. The village gained some fame when American singer Marvin Gaye moved there for several months in the early 1980s. During his stay, the singer composed his hit songs "Sexual Healing" and "Midnight Love." The house he resided in remains an attraction to this day. Another famous inhabitant of the village was Alfons Vanhee, a priest who was a friend of the romantic poet Guido Gezelle in the latter half of the 19th century. Vanhee is best known for composing the text Het manneke uit de mane which is roughly translated as "The man in the Moon".

Gistel

Gistel (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈɣɪstəl]) is a city and municipality located in the Belgian province of West Flanders. Following local government boundary reforms in 1971 and 1977, the municipality has comprised not only Gistel, but also the towns of Moere, Snaaskerke and Zevekote. On January 1, 2006 the Gistel municipality had a total registered population of 11,125, of whom more than 8,000 were in Gistel itself. The total area is 42.25 km² which gives a population density of 263 inhabitants per km². The German town of Büdingen is its twin town.

1937 Sabena Junkers Ju 52 Ostend crash

On 16 November 1937 a Junkers Ju 52/3m owned by Belgian airline SABENA, operating as a scheduled international passenger flight from Munich, Germany, to London, England, crashed near Ostend, Belgium. The aircraft hit a tall factory chimney while attempting to land at Stene aerodrome near Ostend, Belgium. The accident killed prominent members of the Hesse royal family on the way to London for the wedding of Louis, Prince of Hesse and by Rhine.

Lange Max Museum

The Lange Max Museum (LMM) is devoted to the German 38 cm SK L/45 "Max" gun and the German occupation of Koekelare and the nearby area in World War I. The focus on the German side of the war makes it a unique museum in Belgium. The museum is named after the nickname of the German gun "Lange Max", which was one of the biggest guns in the world in 1917, and is located in Koekelare. The museum was opened in October 2014 by the Minister-President of Flanders, Geert Bourgeois. It is located on a domain called Site Lange Max, which includes a farmyard. The site includes other protected monuments such as a bakehouse, the artillery platform and a former German mess. The museum provides information about the "Lange Max" gun that bombarded Dunkirk and also Ypres in 1917 . Dunkirk is located at about ± 45 km from Koekelare. The information is available in four languages: Dutch, German, English and French. Audio guides in Dutch, English and German are also available.

Batterie Pommern

Batterie Pommern, also known as Lange Max, was the world's biggest gun in 1917, during World War I. The German gun was of type 38 cm SK L/45 "Max" and had a modified design by Krupp compared to earlier German 38 cm gun types. The modification allowed the gun to shoot from Koekelare to Dunkirk, which is about 50 km away.

Diaz Arena

Diaz Arena is a multi-use stadium in Ostend, Belgium. It is mostly used for football matches and is the home ground of K.V. Oostende. The stadium holds a capacity of 8,432. Before, it was called Albertpark but after the last renovation in 2016 the name was changed in the current name. Previous names include Albertparkstadion (until 2016) and Versluys Arena (2016-2020).
