St George's Bridge was a bridge over the River Severn in Shrewsbury, England; so named as it was close to the medieval St George's Hospital. It connected Frankwell, an old suburb of the town, to the town centre via Mardol. The gate on the town side was called Mardol Gate and is located where the Mardol Quay Gardens are. The gate on the other side was called Welsh Gate or St George's Gate. The bridge, sometimes now known as the Old Welsh Bridge, was demolished in 1795 and was replaced with the Welsh Bridge. The bridge's date of construction is believed to have been about 1262. In 1539 John Leland described it as follows: ... the greatest, fayrest and highest upon the streame is the Welsh Bridge having 6 great Arches of Stone, soe called because it is the Way out of the Towne into Walles. This Bridge standeth on the West Syde of the Towne, and hath at the one End of it a great Gate to enter by into the Towne, and at the other End towardes Wales a might strong Towre to prohibit Enimies to enter into the Bridge.The bridge was variously described as Walshebrugge (in 1336), and Walshemanne's brigge (in 1351). A public convenience was built on it in about 1496 . One span was a timber drawbridge, while several shops had been built near the middle of the bridge. It is recorded that one tower was still in existence until late in the bridge's life. Above the main tower was a statue of Richard Plantagenet, removed in 1791. The bridge was painted by JMW Turner in 1794. The Welsh Bridge however was built about 80 yards (73m) further downstream, connecting Barker Street (at what was Cripple Lode Gate) with Frankwell. This bridge remains to the day and still carries traffic over the Severn. The section of Barker Street which is on the bridge end has been called Bridge Street since the building of the new bridge. In 2004, the council installed an information board about the history of the bridge and Mardol, at the bottom of Mardol on the approach to the site of the bridge. Only one dry arch of the old St George's Bridge now remains, on the Frankwell side. The arch was excavated during the construction of Theatre Severn in the late 2000s and is preserved within its foundations. Saint George is the patron saint of England. It is also given to the (CofE) church in Frankwell, which is within walking distance of the Welsh Bridge/site of St George's Bridge.

The Quantum Leap is a sculpture situated next to the River Severn in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. It was created to celebrate the bicentenary of the birth of evolutionist Charles Darwin, who was born in the town in 1809. The sculpture was unveiled on 8 October 2009 by Randal Keynes, a great-great-grandson of Darwin.

The King's Head is an old public house on the historic street Mardol in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. It was previously known as the "Last Inn" as it was the last inn in Shrewsbury on the route out of town towards Wales (Frankwell historically was a separate entity, outside the borough of Shrewsbury). It is a Grade II* listed building. There is a passage that runs down the side of the pub, called the King's Head Passage, connecting Smithfield Road with Mardol. A defensive ditch can still be seen when walking down this passage, as the route of the passage has not altered and has not been improved for centuries. When the area floods (due to the nearby River Severn) the ditch fills in with water and can more clearly be seen, often rendering the path unusable. It is a timber framed building and was listed on 10 January 1953. Also nearby are other passages - Phoenix Place, Carnarvon Lane and Mardol Gardens, which all form part of the historical landscape of this part of Shrewsbury.It has been dated by dendrochronology to 1404. It became known as the "King's Head" some time between 1780 and 1820 and was previously known as the "Last Inn". The Welsh Bridge is a masonry arch viaduct in the town of Shrewsbury, England, which crosses the River Severn. It connects Frankwell with the town centre. It is a Grade II* listed building.The bridge was designed and built from 1793 to 1795 by John Tilley and John Carline (whose namesake father was a mason on the English Bridge), who had built Montford Bridge for Thomas Telford. It replaced the medieval St George's Bridge. Four of the arches span 43 feet 4 inches, while the fifth and central arch is 46 feet 2 inches. The bridge is 30 feet wide, and built from Grinshill sandstone. In total it is 266 feet long. It was completed in 1795 at a cost of £8,000. On the south end of the bridge, on the junction with Victoria Avenue, one of the parapets of the bridge has the words "Commit No Nuisance" chiselled into the stone. This is an archaic injunction not to urinate in public.

Mardol is an historic street in Shrewsbury, Shropshire with a variety of architectural styles, ranging from Tudor timber-framed buildings to more modern constructs. It runs from the site of the St George's Bridge (a crossing of the Severn, replaced by the nearby Welsh Bridge, at a place called Mardol Quay) up to the town centre, a place called Mardol Head. The origin of the name of the street is not clear. One possibility is "the mard wall" meaning boundary wall, another is "the Devil's End".Shuts and passages leading from the street include the King's Head Passage, Phoenix Place, Mardol Gardens, Carnarvon Lane, Hill's Lane and Roushill Bank. At the top of Mardol stands a public artwork, Darwin Gate, created in 2004, whilst at the foot is The Quantum Leap, another large outdoor artwork created in 2009.

Frankwell is a district of the town of Shrewsbury, in Shropshire, England. It lies adjacent to the River Severn, to the northwest of the town centre, and is one of Shrewsbury's oldest suburbs. The main road running through the area is also called Frankwell. Frankwell grew up as a port and trading location by the river and on the road to Wales, but across the river from the walled borough of Shrewsbury and therefore beyond the town's jurisdiction. There have been a number of suggestions about where the name derives from, but one possible origin is "Frankville", which means a town of free trade. Being independent from the larger borough of Shrewsbury gave it a local nickname of the Little Borough, a name which is used to this day. Today Frankwell continues to be a commercial area of the town, lying just outside the town centre, with its own character and identity. There has been much redevelopment recently near to the river, especially now flood defences have been constructed, and new buildings include The Guildhall (originally built for Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council) and Theatre Severn.

New Riverside is a proposed £150m shopping centre redevelopment project in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, which is planned to link the town's Darwin and former Pride Hill centres and comprehensively redevelop the Riverside centre site. The redevelopment will comprise approximately 50 new shops and 15 new restaurant and cafe units, totalling around 225,000 sq ft and create one, linked and extended centre of 680,000 sq ft. The scheme will be anchored by a Debenhams department store of 95,000 sq ft.Preliminary plans were put to public consultation in July 2011 and the scheme was granted planning permission in April 2012. Work was due to start summer 2013 with completion due late 2015, however a delay to the project was announced in May 2013. The project will now not be started until some time in the future - if at all, as of yet no works have been implemented.

The Shrewsbury Drapers Company was a trade organisation founded in 1462 in the town of Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England. The members were wholesale dealers in wool and later woollen cloth. The Company dominated the trade in Welsh cloth and in 1566 was given a regional monopoly in the Welsh Wool trade. In the seventeenth century the trade had difficulties particularly during the English Civil war and then further declined in the eighteenth century with the industrialisation of cloth production and the improvement of transport infrastructure. This made it practical for merchants from Liverpool and elsewhere to travel into Wales and purchase cloth directly from the producers. The Reform Acts of the early nineteenth century took away the power of the trade guilds and the trade ceased. Since that time the Shrewsbury Drapers Company has survived and continues as a charity that runs almshouses in Shrewsbury. The Diocese of Shrewsbury (Latin: Dioecesis Salopiensis) is a Latin Church diocese of the Catholic Church in the Province of Birmingham which encompasses the pre-1974 counties of Shropshire and Cheshire in the North West and West Midlands of England. The diocese includes rural areas of Shropshire as well as Manchester south of the River Mersey and other urban areas such as Birkenhead, Stockport and Ellesmere Port. The current bishop, Mark Davies, succeeded on 1 October 2010.

Shrewsbury ( SHROHZ-bər-ee, also SHROOZ-) is a market town, civil parish and the county town of Shropshire, England, on the River Severn, 150 miles (240 km) north-west of London. At the 2021 census, the parish had a population of 76,782.Shrewsbury has Saxon roots and institutions whose foundations dating from that time represent a cultural continuity possibly going back as far as the 8th century. The centre has a largely undisturbed medieval street plan and over 660 listed buildings, including several examples of timber framing from the 15th and 16th centuries. Shrewsbury Castle, a red sandstone fortification, and Shrewsbury Abbey, were founded in 1074 and 1083 respectively by the Norman Earl of Shrewsbury, Roger de Montgomery. The town is the birthplace of Charles Darwin. It has had a role in nurturing aspects of English culture, including drama, ballet, dance and pantomime.Located 9 miles (14 km) east of the Welsh border, Shrewsbury serves as the commercial centre for Shropshire and parts of mid-Wales, with a retail output of over £299 million per year and light industry and distribution centres, such as Battlefield Enterprise Park, on the outskirts. The A5 and A49 trunk roads come together as the town's by-pass and five railway lines meet at Shrewsbury railway station.

The Darwin Shopping Centre is the main shopping centre in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, England, comprising approximately 17 per cent of the town centre's retail offer by leasable area.It was built by John Laing Developments in 1989 and refurbished in 2002. It was in 2010 due to undergo further refurbishment in a plan being devised by Chapman Taylor Architects as part of the New Riverside redevelopment.
