St Andrew the Great

The Lion Yard shopping centre is a covered shopping centre in the city centre of Cambridge, England. Construction work on the centre, which is bounded by St Andrew's Street, Corn Exchange Street, and Petty Cury, commenced in 1970 and the development contained a library, multi-storey car park and magistrates' court. It predates and is significantly smaller than either the Grafton Centre or the Grand Arcade. The latter connects directly to Lion Yard. The Grafton Centre is situated just outside the city centre, however it has large shops such as Debenhams which the Lion Yard does not have, due to its confined location. For many years a central feature of the atrium was a white pillar with the statue of a large red lion on the top of it, safely out of easy reach. This recalled the Red Lion pub which had occupied the site until demolished in 1969. The lion statue was removed in 1999 and is now at the Cambridge University rugby club's ground on Grange Road. A red lion is an emblem of the University of Cambridge and the crest of its rugby club. Lion Yard was refurbished in the late 1990s/early 2000s. A recently constructed covered mall, the Grand Arcade mentioned above, adjoins Lion Yard on its south side; the two are interconnected. The main shopping mall is centred around an atrium which benefits from four entrances and exits. The retail element is concentrated on the ground floor; however, the Central Library can be accessed from the first floor of Lion Yard along with retailers Ellis Brigham, The North Face and New Look. The Centre consists of a three-storey office block (Lion House and St George House), an undercover external colonnade taking up one half of Petty Cury, external shops opposite St Andrew the Great Church, many high street retailers internally along with housing the seventh busiest library in the UK.

The Grand Arcade is a large shopping centre in St Andrew's Street, Cambridge, England. It is anchored by the John Lewis & Partners department store, (formerly Robert Sayle) which is situated to the southeast of the site and which re-opened, following a major rebuild, on 8 November 2007, prior to the rest of the development, which opened on 27 March 2008. It links to the existing Lion Yard shopping centre, the car park of which was demolished and replaced as part of the overall scheme, and renamed on local signage. The city's other major undercover shopping mall, the Grafton, is a ten-minute walk away. The Grand Arcade Cycle Park is the first such dedicated cycle park connected to a shopping centre in the UK. It is set to offer over 500 cycle parking spaces and a cycle shop. Controversially, this was necessary because of the removal of cycle parking on the street in the centre of Cambridge. Besides John Lewis & Partners, there are over 60 other outlets: shops, cafés and restaurants. The Cambridgeshire Collection is a UK local government institution and part of the Cambridgeshire County Council, Cambridgeshire Libraries Local Studies service. It is housed within Cambridge Central Library It collects printed, published and illustrative material relating to the modern county of Cambridgeshire, which includes the former counties of Huntingdonshire and the Isle of Ely. Founded as part of the Free Library in 1855, it is the county's reference Local Studies collection. In 1975 it moved into Lion Yard, Cambridge where it is located on the third floor of Cambridge Central Library. The Cambridgeshire Collection is a reference collection of mainly secondary (printed and published) material; primary documents (original, manuscript) being held in the County Archives at Ely and Huntingdon. Formerly, the service was part of the Cambridgeshire Archives and Local Studies, before these were split, with the archives eventually moving to their new home in 2019.The Collection is of use to family, local and social historians.

Petty Cury is a pedestrianised shopping street in central Cambridge, England. It connects Market Hill, the location of Cambridge's central outdoor market, and Guildhall Street to the west with the shopping streets of Sidney Street and St Andrew's Street to the east. Hobson Street leads off north on the opposite side of the street at the eastern end, on the corner of Christ's College, one of the historic University of Cambridge colleges.

Robert Sayle was the founder of a department store located in Cambridge.

Christ's College is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge. The college includes the Master, the Fellows of the College, and about 450 undergraduate and 170 graduate students. The college was founded by William Byngham in 1437 as God's House. In 1505, the college was granted a new royal charter, was given a substantial endowment by Lady Margaret Beaufort, and changed its name to Christ's College, becoming the twelfth of the Cambridge colleges to be founded in its current form. Alumni of the college include some of Cambridge University’s most famous members, including Charles Darwin and John Milton. Within Cambridge, Christ's has a reputation for high academic standards. It has averaged 1st place on the Tompkins Table from 1980 to 2006 and third place from 2006 to 2013, returning to first place in 2018, 2019 and 2022.The current Master is Simon McDonald.

Corn Exchange Street is a street in central Cambridge, England. It runs between Wheeler Street to the northwest and Downing Street to the southeast. To the northeast, Guildhall Place, a cul-de-sac, runs parallel with Corn Exchange Street at the northern end, an extension of Guildhall Street. On the northwest corner of Corn Exchange Street is the Cambridge Corn Exchange, a music and theatrical venue. To the southwest is the New Museums Site, a site of the University of Cambridge with several museums, such as the Cambridge University Museum of Zoology near the corner with Downing Street. The street acts as the main vehicle access and exit for a large multi-storey car park used by shoppers in central Cambridge.

The Cambridge University Catholic Chaplaincy, known as Fisher House after its patron, English martyr and Cambridge chancellor St John Fisher, is the Catholic chaplaincy for members of the University of Cambridge in England. Founded in 1896, since 1924 it has been located on the site of a former inn on Guildhall Street in Cambridge's city centre. The present Chaplain is Fr Paul Keane.

County Hall is a former municipal building, now used for student accommodation, in Hobson Street, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England. It is a Grade II listed building.

Ginn & Co Solicitors Cambridge was a High Street practice with offices at Sidney House, Sussex Street, Cambridge. It provided bespoke legal advice to individuals, businesses and college institutions for 140 years.

Sussex Street is a pedestranised shopping street in central Cambridge, England. It runs between Sidney Street to the southwest and the junction of King Street and Hobson Street to the northeast.

The building for the Cambridge Medical School of the University of Cambridge was designed in 1899 by Edward Schroeder Prior. Now the Zoological Laboratory, it is a Grade II listed building.The Medical School building is Prior's largest work. Two of Prior's former clients, Dr Allbutt and the Rev. J. B. Lock, were on the committee that appointed the architect. Prior received an honorarium of only 100 guineas for the plans and elevations. He chose to adopt a classical idiom partly as a result of pressure from the committee. The committee also influenced the design in other ways, such as insisting on a stone façade. In style, the building is based on English Baroque, heavily influenced by recent buildings by architects such as Belcher, Pite and Blomfield. It also reflects the presence of J. J. Stevenson's Chemical Laboratories (1886-8), immediately to the west of the site. The Department of Zoology moved in 1933 into the redeveloped building. The architect was John Murray Easton. The former Humphry Museum was entirely reconstructed within, and today houses the Balfour and Newton Libraries.
