The Union River is a 21.9-mile-long (35.2 km) river that runs through Ellsworth, the county seat of Hancock County in eastern Maine. In the colonial era, it was known as the Mount Desert River.The river forms at the north end of Graham Lake at the confluence of the river's East and West branches (44°43′48″N 68°23′04″W), on the border of the towns of Mariaville and Waltham. It runs south 13 miles (21 km) through Graham Lake to the dam at the lake's outlet, then continues south through Ellsworth, flowing through Leonard Lake and passing over its outlet dam just above the downtown. The Leonard Lake dam, also known as The Ellsworth Dam, built in 1907, spans the Union River and forms Lake Leonard. It houses a powerhouse with four generating units that combined produce 29,907 megawatt hours per year, enough to power about 3,000 households. At downtown Ellsworth, the river reaches tidewater, and flows south as an estuary for 5 miles (8 km) to its mouth at Union River Bay, on the border of Surry and Ellsworth, and thence into Blue Hill Bay.

Woodlawn, also known locally as the Black House, is a 180-acre (73 ha) historic estate located a quarter mile from downtown Ellsworth, Maine, at 19 Black House Drive. The Black House Museum is open to the public seasonally and the grounds are open every day, dawn to dusk. The museum was home to three generations of the Black family and features many of their possessions. The family patriarch, John Black, was an agent for a major landowner in the region, and built the mansion house in 1824–27. There are over two miles of hiking trails, a nationally sanctioned croquet court, gardens, fields, and forest open to the public all year. The Black House Museum was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969.

The Col. Charles and Mary Ann Jarvis Homestead is a historic house at 10 Surry Road in Ellsworth, Maine. Built in 1828, the house is architecturally significant as a fine example of transitional Federal-Greek Revival styling, based in part on the publications of Asher Benjamin. It is historically notable for its association with Charles Jarvis, a major landowner in the region. Jarvis was also an active participant in the military preparations of the bloodless Aroostook War, resulting from a long-running boundary dispute with neighboring New Brunswick. Jarvis' daughter, Ann Francis Greely, was also Hancock County's first female doctor, and a local activist for women's rights and temperance. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

The Old Hancock County Buildings are a pair of Greek Revival buildings on Court Street, at a triangular intersection with U.S. Route 1 (US 1) and Maine State Route 172 in Ellsworth, Maine. Originally built in 1834 and 1838 to house Ellsworth Town Hall and the Hancock County courthouse, they are now owned and occupied by the Courthouse Art Gallery. The buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

WRNM (91.7 FM) is a radio station licensed to Ellsworth, Maine, United States. The station is owned by Light of Life Ministries. In March 2012 the station signed on simulcasting Augusta based WMDR-FM. In June 2019, they completed a station upgrade, increasing height, power, and station class at the same location. This upgrade changed their antenna from omnidirectional to a directional antenna that minimizes power towards WMEB-FM.

The Ellsworth Congregational Church is a historic church at 2 Church Street in Ellsworth, Maine, United States. The congregation was organized in 1812, and is affiliated with the United Church of Christ. Its present Greek Revival building was constructed in 1846, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 for its architectural significance. The current pastor is the Reverend Cynthia Priem.

The former Hancock County Jail is located at 40 State Street in Ellsworth, the county seat of Hancock County, Maine. Built in 1885–86, it has a well-appointed living space for the jailer in the front, and a series of cells in the back. It was operated as a jail until the early 1970s, and is now home to the Ellsworth Historical Society, which operates it as a museum. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008 for its architectural and historical significance.

The Ellsworth Public Library is the public library serving Ellsworth, Maine. It is located at 20 State Street in the city's central business district in a historically and architecturally significant Federal style house built in 1817, that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

The Ellsworth Power House and Dam is a hydroelectric power generation facility on the Union River in Ellsworth, Maine. The dam, located just north of downtown Ellsworth, is also known as the Union River Dam, and impounds the river to create Leonard Lake, named for project's engineer, James Leonard. The powerhouse is a Renaissance Revival building located at the western end of the dam. The power plant, built in 1907, was one of the first peaking power plants built in the state, and the hollow concrete dam is one of the highest hollow (or Ambursen-type) buttress dams ever built, having been described as "the highest power dam in New England" in 1928. The facility was nominated for the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, where it is currently listed.

The Grand is a Non-Profit performing arts center on Main Street (United States Route 1) in Ellsworth, Maine). Built in 1938, it is a significant local example of Art Deco architecture, with a prominent marquee and a stepped steel-and-glass tower. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on August 1, 2012.

The Samuel Kidder Whiting House is a historic house at 214 Main Street (United States Route 1) in Ellsworth, Maine. Built in 1871, it is one of the finest examples of the Second Empire architecture in Hancock County. Its design is attributed to George W. Orff, an architect working out of Bangor. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It now houses a financial services office.

Ellsworth is a city in and the county seat of Hancock County, Maine, United States. The 2020 Census determined it had a population of 8,399. Named after United States Founding Father Oliver Ellsworth, it contains historic buildings and other points of interest, and is close to Acadia National Park.
