Noordwelle is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland, and lies about 5 km southwest of Scharendijke. The village was first mentioned in 1109 as Willa, and means well. Noord (north) has been added to distinguish from the former village Zuidwelle. Noordwelle is a circular village around a church which is surrounded by moat. It developed near a 13th century castle which was lost in a flood in the 15th or 16th century. In 1575, Noordwelle was in Spanish hands and liberated by the Dutch States Army on 14 January 1576.The Dutch Reformed church is a single-aisled church. The tower dates from around 1450. The church was destroyed by war in 1576, and rebuilt slightly bigger in the 17th century. The choir was converted into a school in 1859. In the early 1960s, the school parts were demolished.Noordwelle was home to 392 people in 1840. It was a separate municipality until 1961, when it was merged with Westerschouwen. In 1997, it became part of the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland.

It has its own place name signs. It was home to 489 people in 1840. Nowadays it consists of about 10 houses. A church was built in 1741, but was demolished in 1958, because a new church had been built in neighbouring Scharendijke.The grist mill De Lelie was built in 1868 and decommissioned in 1960. In 2008, it was bought and turned into a restaurant specialising in pan cakes. The flour for the pancakes is ground by the wind mill.Elkerzee was a separate municipality until 1961, when it was merged into Middenschouwen.

Scharendijke

Scharendijke is a village in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland, and lies about 24 km west of Hellevoetsluis. The village was first mentioned in 1487 as Schaerdendijke, and is a combination of dike and trench. Scharendijke is a dike village. It was originally a little hamlet. Between 1901 and 1902, a harbour was built and it developed into a little village around the harbour.Scharendijke was home to 204 people in 1840. Part of the village was rebuilt after the North Sea flood of 1953. From the 1970s onwards, holiday homes were built around the village.Scharendijke used to be part of the municipality of Elkerzee. In 1960, the municipality of Middenschouwen was created and Scharendijk became its capital. In 1997, it was merged into Schouwen-Duiveland.

Burghsluis

Burghsluis is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Zeeland. It is a part of the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland, and lies about 22 km north of Middelburg.Burghsluis is not a statistical entity, and the postal authorities have placed it under Burgh-Haamstede. It has place signs and a little harbour. It was home to 89 people in 1840. Nowadays, it consists of about 30 houses.The Plompe Toren is located near Burghsluis which is the sole reminder of the flooded village Koudekerke. Around 1550 dikes were built, but the village of Koudekerke was left outside the dike. The village was demolished and used as building material except for the tower of the church which remained standing.

County of Zeeland

The County of Zeeland (Dutch: Graafschap Zeeland) was a county of the Holy Roman Empire in the Low Countries. It covered an area in the Scheldt and Meuse delta roughly corresponding to the modern Dutch province of Zeeland. The County of Zeeland did not include the region of Zeelandic Flanders which was part of Flanders; conversely, the modern Province of Zeeland does not include Sommelsdijk, historically part of the County of Zeeland.
