Fürstenau (Northern Low Saxon: Försnau) is a municipality in the district of Osnabrück, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated approximately 40 kilometres (25 mi) northwest of Osnabrück, and 25 kilometres (16 mi) east of Lingen. Fürstenau is also the seat of the Samtgemeinde ("collective municipality") Fürstenau. St. Georg Evangelical Lutheran Church stands in the city market square. Pastor Anke Kusche tells the story of how during World War II the army required all the available metal for war products. The church bells which had rung daily for hundreds of years were taken down as required. But during the night one of them was stolen and buried until after the war in a farmer's field. In the city clerks office hangs a painting of the city in the late 18th century. It is how the city still looks in December 2006.

Große Aa

The Große Aa is a 35-kilometre-long (22 mi), right, eastern tributary of the River Ems in western Lower Saxony (Germany). It begins in the Samtgemeinde Freren, near the quarter of Overwater, at the confluence of the Deeper Aa and Ahe rivers. From there is flows through Lünne westwards to Hesselte, where it is joined by the Speller Aa. From there on it runs parallel to the Dortmund–Ems Canal and discharges into the Ems 6 km (3.7 mi) south of Lingen, a few metres north of the mouth of the canal after the Gleesen locks.

The river springs as Weeser Aa southeast of the Ankum Heights and east of Merzen in Lower Saxony. After crossing the boundary between Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia, it changes it name into Halverder Aa and near Halverde (a district of Hopsten) into Halverder-Schaler Aa. Near Schale (a district of Hopsten), it changes its name again into Schaler Aa. Finally, it discharges into the Große Aa south of Freren.
