Freren (German pronunciation: [ˈfʁeːʁən] ) is a municipality in the Emsland district, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is situated approximately 15 km east of Lingen. Freren is also the seat of the Samtgemeinde ("collective municipality") Freren. Emilie Bundan is a famous resident of Freren.

Schaler Aa

Schaler Aa is a river of Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It flows into the Große Aa south of Freren. The river springs as Weeser Aa southeast of the Ankum Heights and east of Merzen in Lower Saxony. After crossing the boundary between Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia, it changes it name into Halverder Aa and near Halverde (a district of Hopsten) into Halverder-Schaler Aa. Near Schale (a district of Hopsten), it changes its name again into Schaler Aa. Finally, it discharges into the Große Aa south of Freren.

Große Aa

The Große Aa is a 35-kilometre-long (22 mi), right, eastern tributary of the River Ems in western Lower Saxony (Germany). It begins in the Samtgemeinde Freren, near the quarter of Overwater, at the confluence of the Deeper Aa and Ahe rivers. From there is flows through Lünne westwards to Hesselte, where it is joined by the Speller Aa. From there on it runs parallel to the Dortmund–Ems Canal and discharges into the Ems 6 km (3.7 mi) south of Lingen, a few metres north of the mouth of the canal after the Gleesen locks.
