The buildings primarily date between about 1900 and 1950, and include notable examples of Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Classical Revival, and Bungalow / American Craftsman style residential architecture. Located in the district is the separately listed Machaven. Other notable buildings include the W.D. Cochran House (c. 1900), Mills-Watson House (c. 1914), Aladdin Homes Company "kit houses," the James Craig Braswell School (1940), Draine Confectionery (c. 1930), and West End Grocery (c. 1930).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999, with a boundary increase in 2002.

Rocky Mount Electric Power Plant, also known as Pearsall Machine Works, Inc., is a historic power station located at Rocky Mount, Nash County, North Carolina. It was built in 1901 as a one-story brick facility and raised to its present height of two stories, and a rear addition was made as well, in 1920. It has a corrugated metal gable roof with parapet gable ends. The building housed a power plant until 1910.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Its main building serves as an Amtrak train station, while an adjacent building serves as the bus terminus for the Tar River Transit and as a Greyhound stop. The station is located just south of downtown Rocky Mount and is part of the Rocky Mount Central City Historic District.

H. Kress and Company (c. 1913), Belk-Tyler (c. 1905, 1915, 1920, 1945), Grand Theater (c. 1912, 1930s), Manhattan Theater (c. 1935), Holy Hope Episcopal Church (1910s), and Summerlin House (1895).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, with a boundary increase / decrease in 2009.

The district includes the buildings previously listed as Rocky Mount Mills and includes the Colonel Benjamin D. Battle House (1835). Other notable buildings include the mill village community house (1918) and a variety of one- and two-story frame mill worker houses.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

Stonewall, also known as Lewis House and Little Falls Plantation, is a historic plantation house located near Rocky Mount, Nash County, North Carolina. It was built about 1830, and is a two-story, five-bay, Federal style brick dwelling. It sits on a raised basement and has a high hipped roof. The front facade features a pedimented Ionic order portico added in 1915.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.

Rocky Mount Mills, located in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, was the second cotton mill constructed in the state of North Carolina, dating back to 1816. Capitol Broadcasting Company bought the 150-acre (61 ha) mills in the 2007 and has since redeveloped it into a mixed-use campus of breweries, restaurants, lofts, office, and event space.

The Nash County Confederate Monument is a Confederate memorial in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, United States. The monument is slated to be removed in 2020.
