Lüchow

Lüchow is a Samtgemeinde ("collective municipality") in the district of Lüchow-Dannenberg, in Lower Saxony, Germany. Its seat is in the town Lüchow. The Samtgemeinde Lüchow consists of the following municipalities: Bergen an der Dumme Clenze Küsten Lemgow Luckau (Wendland) Lübbow Lüchow Schnega Trebel Waddeweitz Woltersdorf Wustrow

The Wendland is a region in Germany on the borders of the present states of Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. Its heart is the Hanoverian Wendland in the county of Lüchow-Dannenberg in Lower Saxony. In 2012 the state of Lower Saxony nominated the Rundling villages in Hanoverian Wendland for the German shortlist of candidates for future UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Subsequent decisions that will determine the success of this bid take place in 2013 at the conference of education ministers (Kultusministerkonferenz) and no earlier than 2017 by UNESCO.

Lüchow-Dannenberg is a district in Lower Saxony, Germany, which is usually referred to as Hanoverian Wendland (Hannoversches Wendland) or Wendland. It is bounded by (from the west and clockwise) the districts of Uelzen and Lüneburg and the states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (district of Ludwigslust-Parchim), Brandenburg (district of Prignitz) and Saxony-Anhalt (districts of Stendal and Altmarkkreis Salzwedel).

Woltersdorf is a municipality in the district Lüchow-Dannenberg, in Lower Saxony, Germany. The municipality Woltersdorf includes the villages Woltersdorf, Klein Breese, Lichtenberg and Thurau. Famous sites around Woltersdorf are the Brautstein ("stone of the bride") and the Feldkirche ("church on the field"). Both of these can be seen in the coat of arms of Woltersdorf. The Brautstein is a formation of ancient boulders left behind by glaciers in the ice age. The Feldkirchr has a little stone in its walls which was taken from the Slavic population and was built into the church.

The Overseas radio reception center Lüchow (German: Übersee- Funkempfangsstelle Lüchow (ÜFESt or ÜEFuSt)) was one of the large radio reception centers of the German Federal Post Office for civil telecommunications use between 1948 and 1987. It was used to handle teletype, telegram and telephone services worldwide via shortwave radio.

Luckau (Wendland) is a village or Gemeinde (municipality) in the south of the Kreis (local government district) of Lüchow-Dannenberg in Lower Saxony, Germany, where it forms part of the Samtgemeinde (joint municipal association) of Lüchow (Wendland). The village lies some eight kilometres southwest of Lüchow itself, the administrative centre of both the Kreis and the Samtgemeinde. The southern border of the municipality coincides with that between the German federal states of Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. Situated in the region known as the Wendland, Luckau is one of the rundlings (villages arranged in a circle around a common) that are characteristic of the area. The name Luckau comes from the Slavic lauck, signifying a leek- or onion-field.

Salzwedel station is the station of the district town of Salzwedel in Altmark in the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. Until 2004, it was a railway junction, but as a result of the closure of nearly all branch lines it has lost most of its importance. Only one railway line still runs through Salzwedel.

It is the capital of the district (Kreis) of Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, and has a population of approximately 21,500. Salzwedel is located on the German Timber-Frame Road.
