The siege of Kotte was an offensive which took place during the Sinhalese–Portuguese War between 1557 and 1558. A 50,000-strong Sitawaka army led by King Mayadunne besieged Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte, the capital of Kotte Kingdom, for 12 months against a combined force of Portuguese and Lascarins led by Captain-major Dom Afonso Pereira de Lacerda. After receiving reinforcements from Mannar, Portuguese made a sally and succeeded in forcing the besiegers to withdraw. This siege marked the beginning of a series of battles between Portuguese and Sitawaka forces, and ultimately ended as Portuguese abandoned Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte in 1565.

Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte, commonly known as Kotte (pronounced [ˈkoːʈeː]), is the legislative capital of Sri Lanka. Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte is located adjacent to the urban area of Sri Lanka's de facto economic, executive, and judicial capital, Colombo. The Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte Municipal Council area is bounded in: the North by Kolonnawa Urban Council area, the North-East by the Kotikawatta–Mulleriyawa Pradeshiya Sabha area, the East by the Kaduwela Municipal Council area, the South-East by the Maharagama Urban Council area, the South-West by the Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Municipal Council and the West by the Colombo Municipal Council area, which is the commercial capital of Sri Lanka.

Devi Balika Vidyalaya is a public national girls' school in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Girls are admitted at grade six, based on the results of an island-wide scholarship examination. Like other national schools it is controlled by the central government, as opposed to a provincial council.

The Japanese School in Colombo (コロンボ日本人学校, Koronbo Nihonjin Gakkō) is a Japanese international school in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It was established on 2 September 1966 (Shōwa 41). It was previously located elsewhere in Colombo.

Welikada is a suburb in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It is the location of the Welikada Maximum Security Prison.

Pakiasothy Saravanamuttu Stadium (Tamil: பாக்கியசோதி சரவணமுத்து மைதானம், Sinhala: පාකියසොති සර්වනමූත්තු ක්‍රීඩාංගනය) Colombo Oval or P. Sara or simply PSS is a multi-purpose stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It is currently used mostly for cricket matches. The stadium holds 15,000 and hosted its first Test match in 1982. It is named after Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu, a former civil servant and first President of the Board of Control for Cricket. The venue is the home ground of the Tamil Union Cricket and Athletic Club. The P.Sara Oval hosts one Test match per year in Sri Lanka's summer Test calendar, but lost out to Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in 2011 to host Sri Lanka v Australia Tests.

The Royal Colombo Golf Club is the oldest golf club in Sri Lanka. Established in 1880, it is located in the capital city of Colombo at The Ridgeway Links also known as the Anderson Golf Course. It is home to the Sri Lanka Golf Union, the governing body of Golf in Sri Lanka and maintains links with The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews in Scotland.

The Institute of Chemistry Ceylon is the successor to the Chemical Society of Ceylon (founded 1941) and was established in the year 1971 for the general advancement of the science and practice of chemistry. It is a not-for-profit organization, learned society catering to the Chemical Sciences as well as a professional, qualifying and examination body looking after and responsible for the maintenance and enhancement of the profession of Chemistry in Sri Lanka. It is the oldest such body in any branch of the basic sciences in Sri Lanka. The Golden Jubilee of the Institute was held in 1991 & the Diamond Jubilee in 2001. The Institute of Chemistry Ceylon was incorporated by Act of Parliament No. 15 of 1972.

Borella is the largest suburb in Colombo, Sri Lanka represented by divisional code 8.

The President's College is a boys' national school in Sri Jayawardenapura Kotte, Sri Lanka. Founded on 4 February 1978, its inauguration was the first official act carried out by President J. R. Jayewardene.

Kanatte Cemetery, also known locally as Borella Cemetery, is Colombo's main burial ground and crematorium. It is located at the intersection of Elvitigala Mawatha (Narahenpita Road), Bauddhaloka Mawatha (Bullers Road) and D. S. Senanayake Mawatha (Baseline Road). The 19.3 ha (48 acres) cemetery is owned and operated by the Colombo Municipal Council and contains a Commonwealth War Graves Plot with a number of additional war graves dispersed around the site. The war graves include those of a German soldier, a German merchant seaman, a German interned civilian and an Austrian nursing sister. There are over 60 World War I Commonwealth servicemen and nearly 300 World War II Commonwealth servicemen buried here. The cemetery was established in 1866 and is the main place of burial for all religions and nationalities, with separate sections for Hindus, Buddhists, Shintos, Roman Catholics, Anglicans and non-denominational Christians. The first burial was in May 1866, prior to this most British burials occurred at the Galle Face Burial Grounds, an area near the current Presidential Secretariat building. In the 1920s, those graves were exhumed and the remains were interred at Kanatte.The cemetery's most famous Westerner interred at the cemetery is British-born science fiction writer Sir Arthur C. Clarke (1917–2008).
