Battle of San Fermo

San Fermo della Battaglia is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Como in the Italian region of Lombardy, located about 40 kilometres (25 mi) north of Milan and about 3 kilometres (2 mi) southwest of Como. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 4,255 and an area of 3.1 square kilometres (1.2 sq mi).With della Battaglia meaning "of the battle", the town is named after the battle which took place there between Garibaldi's Hunters of the Alps (Cacciatori delle Alpi) and Austrian militaries in 1859. San Fermo della Battaglia borders the following municipalities: Como, Montano Lucino.

It's a frazione of San Fermo della Battaglia since 2017. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 2,816 and an area of 2.7 square kilometres (1.0 sq mi).

Prestino (Italian: Prestin, Italian pronunciation: [preʃˈtiːŋ]) is a district of Como, Italy, of about 3,000 inhabitants, about 2 km west of that city.

Villa Olmo is a neoclassical villa located in the city of Como, northern Italy. The villa was commissioned by marquis Innocenzo Odescalchi to Swiss architect Simone Cantoni to have a summer retreat alongside the lake. Works started in 1797 and were completed in 1812. The villa was named after an elm tree, no longer alive today, planted in the middle of the ornate gardens. About 800 varieties of trees still grow here. The villa was acquired in 1924 by the municipality of Como and today is open to the public only during exhibitions, while the lakeside gardens are freely accessible during the daytime.

Rebbio is a southern district (circoscrizione) of the city of Como in Lombardy, Italy. Located approximately four kilometres southwest of the city centre, it lies at the foot of the hill dominated by Castel Baradello. Historically an autonomous municipality (comune) with origins tracing back to at least the 14th century, Rebbio was aggregated into the city of Como in 1927. It remains an important transit area and access point to Como from the southwest.

Como San Giovanni railway station (Italian: Stazione di Como San Giovanni) is the main station serving the city and comune of Como, in the region of Lombardy, northern Italy. Opened in 1875, it forms part of the Milan–Chiasso railway, and is also a terminus of the Como–Lecco railway, which branches off the main line a few kilometres (miles) to the south, at Albate-Camerlata. Como San Giovanni is the last Italian station on the line to Chiasso, and therefore fulfils the functions of a border station. However, border checks have not been carried out there since 2008, when Switzerland joined the Schengen Agreement.The station is currently managed by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), but the commercial area of the passenger building is managed by Centostazioni. Train services are operated by Trenitalia. Each of these companies is a subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato (FS), Italy's state-owned rail company.

Chiasso (Italian pronunciation: [ˈkjasso]; Lombard: Ciass [ˈtʃas]) is a municipality in the district of Mendrisio in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. As the southernmost of Switzerland's municipalities, Chiasso is on the border with Italy, in front of Ponte Chiasso (a frazione of Como, Italy). The municipality of Chiasso includes the villages of Boffalora, Pedrinate and Seseglio. In 2007, the three mayors of Chiasso, Vacallo and Morbio Inferiore decided to unite into one commune. The new united commune with a population of ~15,300 people over a territory of 9.2 km2 (3.6 sq mi), was rejected by the population in November 2007.

Stadio Giuseppe Sinigaglia is a multi-use stadium in Como, Italy. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home ground of Como 1907. The stadium holds 13,602 people. The stadium was completed in 1927 and was built on the request of Benito Mussolini. It is named after the Italian rower and war hero Giuseppe Sinigaglia, a native of Como.In 2004 British rock band Deep Purple played a concert there.

Chiasso railway station (Italian: Stazione di Chiasso) is a station owned by the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB CFF FFS). It serves the town of Chiasso, in the canton of Ticino, Switzerland, and is also a border station between Switzerland and Italy.The station is both the southern terminus of the Gotthard railway (owned and operated by SBB CFF FFS), and the northern terminus of the Milan–Chiasso railway (owned by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana and operated by Trenitalia). It is situated a few metres from the border, with the eastern section of Platform 1 being located on Italian territory, and is separated from the Italian city of Como by twin railway tunnels through the Monte Olimpino.

The Cosia is a 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) torrent whose springs are on the slopes of Monte Bolletone (1,317 metres (4,321 ft)) in Brianza, Italy. Its course takes it through the communities of Albese con Cassano, Tavernerio and Como, then it enters Lake Como near the war memorial designed by Antonio Sant'Elia and executed by Giuseppe Terragni. The river has two tributaries: the Valloni on the left and the Tisone on the right. The few fish which the river supports are mostly souffia, members of the carp family. On 14 October 1607 the Cosia caused disastrous floods at Como which the historian Primo Tatti described in his life of Saint Giovanni da Meda: the monasteries of Santa Chiara and Santa Margherita were destroyed, as was the Collegio Gallio, together with its church which held the remains of the saint, and the church of Rondinetto which was rebuilt on a new site.

The Tempio Voltiano (Italian; Volta Temple in English) is a museum in the city of Como, Italy that is dedicated to Alessandro Volta, a prolific scientist and the inventor of the electrical battery. Volta was born in Como in 1745, held his first professorship there until 1779, and retired to Como in 1819. The neoclassical building was designed by Federico Frigerio (1873–1959). It was completed in 1927 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the scientist's death, but was inaugurated in 1928. It hosts a collection of scientific instruments used by the physicist including his early voltaic piles (batteries). The first floor has a display of his personal belongings and his awards. In 1984 the museum was featured on the back of the 10,000 lire banknote. Volta's portrait was depicted on the front of the same banknote. The notes circulated until 2001, when the Euro notes replaced them. Banknotes based on the Italian lira have since been replaced by notes denominated in Euros. Near the Tempio Voltiano are the new statue by Daniel Libeskind named Life Electric and the Faro Voltiano. both dedicated to Volta.
