Hadeln

Otterndorf (German: [ˈɔtɐndɔʁf] ; Northern Low Saxon: Oterndörp) is a town on the coast of the North Sea in the federal state of Lower Saxony, Germany, and is part of the collective municipality (Samtgemeinde) of Land Hadeln. The town, located in the administrative district (Landkreis) of Cuxhaven, is at the mouth of the river Medem, part of the Elbe delta. The old town centre (Altstadt) features a number of half-timbered houses.

Land Hadeln is a Samtgemeinde ("collective municipality") in the district of Cuxhaven, in Lower Saxony, Germany. Its seat is in the town Otterndorf. It was formed on 1 January 2011 by the merger of the former Samtgemeinden Hadeln and Sietland. On 1 November 2016 the Samtgemeinde Am Dobrock was merged into Land Hadeln. German submarine U-287 was a Type VIIC U-boat of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine during World War II. The submarine was laid down on 8 August 1942 at the Bremer Vulkan yard at Bremen-Vegesack as yard number 52. She was launched on 13 August 1943 and commissioned on 22 September under the command of Oberleutnant zur See Heinrich Meyer. She did not sink or damage any ships. Official records report that she was sunk by a mine in May 1945 in the Elbe estuary. But late interviews with crew members support that she was scuttled. According to these sources the remaining four crew members convinced British investigators they were struck by a mine. This version avoided the whole crew for being charged for destroying the sub which was supposed to be handed over to allies forces according to German Instrument of Surrender.

Sietland is a former Samtgemeinde ("collective municipality") in the district of Cuxhaven, in Lower Saxony, Germany. It was situated in the historical Land of Hadeln approx. 20 km southeast of Cuxhaven. Its seat was in the village Ihlienworth. On 1 January 2011 it merged with the Samtgemeinde Hadeln to form the new Samtgemeinde Land Hadeln. The Samtgemeinde Sietland consisted of the following municipalities: Ihlienworth Odisheim Steinau Wanna

Ihlienworth (in High German, in Low Saxon: Helmworth) is a municipality in the district of Cuxhaven, in Lower Saxony, Germany.

Nordleda is a municipality in the district of Cuxhaven, in Lower Saxony, Germany. Nordleda belonged to the Land of Hadeln, first an exclave of the younger Duchy of Saxony and after its de facto dynastic partition in 1296 of the Duchy of Saxe-Lauenburg, established de jure in 1260. In 1728 Emperor Charles VI enfeoffed the George II Augustus and his House of Hanover in personal union with the reverted fief of Saxe-Lauenburg. By a redeployment of Hanoverian territories in 1731 the Hanoverian Duchies of Bremen and Verden were conveyed the administration of the neighboured Land of Hadeln. The Kingdom of Hanover incorporated the Land of Hadeln in a real union and its territory, including Nordleda, became part of the new Stade Region, established in 1823.

Land Hadeln is a historic landscape and former administrative district in Northern Germany with its seat in Otterndorf on the Lower Elbe, the lower reaches of the River Elbe, in the Elbe-Weser Triangle between the estuaries of the Elbe and Weser. The name goes back to a place named Haduloha in the Royal Frankish Annals, which must have been in the north of Hohe Lieth moraine range, west of present-day Cuxhaven. Enthusiastic historians of late 19th and early 20th century postulated an Old Saxon Gau (district) of that name, but there is no evidence for this theory. In the Middle Ages, the Land Hadeln was a fairly, but not perfectly, autonomous rural community, applying Saxon Law. Nominally, it belonged to the Dukes of Saxe-Lauenburg, whom the notables of the country almost had chosen, because they were too weak to rule strictly. The Land Hadeln has to be consequently distinguished from the Land Wursten west of it that was a perfectly autonomous rural republic, for some centuries. It was the easternmost of the Frisian republics and applied Frisian Law.
