Halkirk Auld Kirk

Braal Castle is located by the River Thurso north of the village of Halkirk, in Caithness, northern Scotland. The ruined castle, which dates back to the mid-14th century, was originally known as the Castle of Brathwell.

Halkirk (Scottish Gaelic: Hàcraig) is a village on the River Thurso in Caithness, in the Highland council area of Scotland. From Halkirk the B874 road runs towards Thurso in the north and towards Georgemas in the east. The village is within the parish of Halkirk, and is said by locals to be Scotland's first planned village. In 1222 Jon Haraldsson, the last native Scandinavian to be Jarl of Orkney, was indirectly implicated in the burning of Adam of Melrose at his hall at Halkirk by local farmers when this part of Caithness was still part of the Kingdom of Norway. A contemporary chronicler, Boethius the Dane blamed Haraldsson for the bishop's death. After the jarl swore oaths to his own innocence, Alexander II took the opportunity to assert his claims to the mainland part of the Orkney jarldom. He visited Caithness in person, and hanged the majority of the farmers, while mutilating the rest. His actions were applauded by Pope Honorius III, and a quarter of a century later, he was continuing to receive commendation from the Catholic Church, as in the reward of a bull from Pope Celestine IV.

Halkirk United Football Club are a senior football team from Halkirk, Caithness in Scotland, who compete in the North Caledonian Football League.

Halkirk was a railway station located on the southern edge of the village of Halkirk, in Caithness in the Highland council area. The station opened on 28 July 1874. It was one of a number of smaller stations on the Far North Line which were closed in 1960. Georgemas Junction station, situated 1.2 miles (2 km) to the north-east, remains open.

Georgemas Junction railway station is a railway station located in the Highland council area in the far north of Scotland. It serves several rural hamlets in the historic county of Caithness, including Georgemas, Roadside and Banniskirk. It is also the nearest station to the village of Halkirk, which lies approximately 1.6 miles (2.6 km) west of the station. Georgemas Junction is the penultimate station on the Far North Line from Inverness to Wick, 147 miles 22 chains (237 km) down the line from Inverness. Immediately to the west of the station lies a junction of the same name, where the branch to Thurso spurs off northwards; mileages on this branch are measured from the station. This junction is the northernmost railway junction in the United Kingdom. The station has a single platform which is long enough to accommodate a six-carriage train. The station is managed by ScotRail, who operate the services at the station.

Georgemas is an area in the county of Caithness, in the Highland area of Scotland, about 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) south of the town of Thurso and about two kilometres (one mile) east of the village of Halkirk. The area is served also by the A9, A882 and B874 roads. The A9 has a junction with the A882 in the area and forms a crossroads with the B874. The name Georgemas is that of a now historic St George's Day agricultural fair which was held in the area, on Sordale Hill. Georgemas Junction, the station name, dates from 1874.

Shalmstry is a small settlement in Caithness, Scotland. It is just under 3 miles (5 kilometres) south of Thurso. It is located off the A9 and is remote. The settlements of Weydale and Sordale can be found to the south and Thurso to the north via the A9.

Achingills (Gaelic: ) is a small hamlet in Halkirk, Caithness within Highland region and is in the Scottish council area of the Highland. Scotland. Achingills Farm is home to the Williamson family who have farmed it since 1988.
