Sassnitz (German pronunciation: [ˈzasnɪts], before 1993 in German: Saßnitz) is a town on the Jasmund peninsula, Rügen Island, in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. The population as of 2012 was 9,498. Sassnitz is a well-known seaside resort and port town, and is a gateway to the nearby Jasmund National Park with its unique chalk cliffs. The decommissioned British submarine HMS Otus was purchased by a German entrepreneur and towed to Sassnitz to be a floating museum. The Sassnitz area is most popular for its famous chalk rocks (Kreidefelsen), which inspired artists like Caspar David Friedrich.

Sassnitz Wildlife Park (German: Tierpark Sassnitz) is a wildlife park in the borough of Sassnitz on the German Baltic Sea island of Rügen. The park is open year-round and covers an area of 2.5 hectares on the edge of the town of Sassnitz. About 250 animals of 60 species are kept in the park. These are predominantly native animals, but there are exotic species as well. Sassnitz Wildlife Park is the only park of its kind on Germany's largest island. In 2001 it received 27,000 visitors. In addition to a kiosk, which caters for visitors gastronomically, the park has an open-air stage, a play park, and a petting zoo. An educational trail offers information about native animals and plants. Amongst the species kept are eagles, monkeys, fallow deer, degu, red squirrel, magpie, ducks, donkeys, owls, pheasants, trout, ferrets, fox, rabbits, lynx, weasels, guinea pigs, coatis, horses, sheep, snowy owl, eagle-owl, tawny owl, wildcat, wild boar, gray wolf, zebra finch and goats.

Steinbach is a small stream on the island of Rügen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. Its source is in the Jasmund National Park, and it flows into the Baltic Sea in the town of Sassnitz.

The Jasmund National Park (German: Nationalpark Jasmund) is a nature reserve on the Jasmund peninsula, in the northeast of Rügen island in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. It is famous for containing the largest chalk cliffs in Germany, the highest of which is Königsstuhl (German = "king's chair"), rising to 118 m (387 ft) above the Baltic Sea. The highest point in the park as a whole is Pieckberg, at 161 m (528 ft) above sea level. The beech forests behind the cliffs are also part of the national park. Consisting of only 30 km2 (12 sq mi), this is the smallest national park in Germany. The park was founded in September 1990 by the last government of East Germany (GDR) prior to the German reunification. On 25 June 2011 the beech forest in the park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as an extension of the Primeval Beech Forests of Europe site because of its undisturbed nature and its testimony to the ecological history of Europe since the last Ice Age.

The Stubnitz is a hilly, forested landscape region on the east coast of the Jasmund peninsula on the German Baltic Sea island of Rügen – Germany's largest island. It covers an area of about 2,400 ha and runs from the town of Sassnitz to the municipality of Lohme, Today, it is almost entirely part of the 3,000 ha Jasmund National Park. The name Stubnitz is probably of Slavic origin; but the literature gives a wide variety of meanings – from Stufenland ("stepped landscape") to Waldung mit Bienenkellern ("woods with beehives").

At 160.9 m above sea level (HN), the Piekberg is the highest point on the island of Rügen and in the region of West Pomerania. It is also the fifth highest point in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It barely rises above the surrounding area, though, as the height difference is very low. The hill is located in a wooded area in the northwestern part of the Jasmund Peninsula, about 2 kilometres southwest of the Stubbenkammer in the Jasmund National Park and about 3 kilometres northeast of the town of Sassnitz. The state road (Landstraße) from Lohme to Sassnitz runs past the Piekberg to the east.

Jasmund is a peninsula of the island of Rügen in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. It is connected to the Wittow peninsula and to the Muttland main section of Rügen by the narrow land bridges Schaabe and Schmale Heide, respectively. Sassnitz, Sagard and the Mukran international ferry terminal are on Jasmund. Jasmund is also famous for the Rügen Chalk cliffs within the Jasmund National Park, a nature reserve in the northeast of Rügen island.

Sassnitz Fährhafen (German: Bahnhof Sassnitz Fährhafen) is a railway station in the town of Sassnitz, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. The station lies on the Stralsund–Sassnitz railway and the seasonal train services are operated by Hanseatische Eisenbahn.

Herthasee is a lake on the island Rügen, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. At a length of 170 m and a width of 140 m, it covers a surface area of 0.202 km2. It has a maximum depth of 11 m. It is located in the center of the Jasmund National Park and its famous chalk cliffs. At its embankment, the lake features a Slavic hill fort called Herthaburg, with a height of 17 m. It was constructed and inhabited between the 8th and 12th century.

SS Hamburg was a German ocean liner owned by the Hamburg America Line, built by the Blohm & Voss of Hamburg, Germany, and launched in 1925. She had a sister ship, SS New York. They were similar to the SS Albert Ballin. During World War II, the ship became a naval accommodation ship for the Kriegsmarine in 1940 and served with the 7th U-boat Flotilla in Kiel. Reassigned to 3rd U-boat Flotilla on 1 March 1941, Hamburg was transferred to 6th U-boat Flotilla in Danzig in October. From June 1943, Hamburg was relocated to Gotenhafen and assigned to 8th U-boat Flotilla. On 7 March 1945 during the evacuation of Germans from the Eastern Front, she struck a mine and sank off Saßnitz in position 54°30′00″N 13°42′02″E. The wreck was raised by the Soviets and converted to a whaler at Warnowwerft, Warnemünde, from 7 November 1950. Becoming Yuri Dolgoruki, the ship was put in service on 12 July 1960. She was then broken up in 1977.
