Kollam Metropolitan Area is the 4th largest Metropolis in Kerala and 14th largest urban agglomeration in South India. It is one of the 10 fastest growing cities in the world covering an area of 364.51 km2 (2015) with a 31.1% urban growth between 2015 and 2020 as per the survey conducted by Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) based on urban area growth during January 2020. The metropolitan area, constituted on the basis of 2011 census data, consists of Kollam Municipal Corporation (Quilon), 2 municipalities, 22 Panchayaths and parts of 2 Panchayaths. The two municipalities are Paravur and Karunagappalli. The 21 Panchayaths are Adichanalloor, Adinad, Ayanivelikulangara, Chavara, Elampalloor, Kallelibhagom, Kottamkara, Kulasekharapuram, Mayyanad, Meenad, Nedumpana, Oachira, Panayam, Panmana, Perinad, Poothakkulam, Thazhuthala, Thodiyoor, Thazhava, Thrikkaruva, Thrikkovilvattom, and Vadakkumthala. Outgrowth of Neendakara, Eravipuram and Thrikkadavoor panchayaths are also included in the Kollam metropolitan area.

Kollam Indoor Stadium or Olympian Suresh Babu Multipurpose Indoor Stadium is a stadium in making around the Cantonment area of Kollam. The construction process is supposed to be completed by December, 2023 at a cost of Rs 39 crore on 3.6 acres of land allocated by the government at Peerangi Maidan in the center of Kollam city, with seating for two thousand people, a men's hostel for 100 athletes training in 21 sports, and a swimming pool.

The Lal Bahadur Shastri Corporation Stadium is a stadium in Kollam. Recently renovated, the venue hosts football matches. The Sports Authority of India has a training centre in this stadium.

Mundakkal, also spelt Mundackal, is an important residential area and industrial hub situated in the city of Kollam, Kerala, India. The place is considered as the capital of India's cashew processing activities. Kerala State Cashew Development Corporation Limited(KSCDC) and Cashew Export Promotion Council of India(CEPCI) are headquartered at Mundakkal in Kollam city. It is an important tourist place in the city and a part of Downtown Kollam which gained in significance because of the presence of a flourishing beach. During 'Karkidaka Vavubali', thousands of devotees arrive on the beach to perform the Vavubali Tharpanam. Vavubali is an important ritual observed by Hindus in Kerala in the month of Karkidakam. The ritual involves people offering Bali to the departed souls. The ritual is performed by men, women, and children.

The Cashew Export Promotion Council of India or CEPC or CEPCI was established by the Government of India in 1955, with the active cooperation of the cashew industry with the object of promoting exports of cashew kernels and cashew nut shell liquid from India. It is headquartered in Mundakkal in the city of Kollam, Kerala. The Council serves as an intermediary between importers of cashew kernels and exporters who are members of the council. The council is also supposed to deal with any disputes on exports or imports arising on account of quality standards, breach of contractual obligations, etc. It undertakes numerous activities, such as organizing global buyer-seller meets, organizing studies on the nutritional aspects of cashew and providing support to cashew processors and exporters for improving infrastructure. In 2013–14, India exported 113,620 metric tonnes of cashew shipments which also constituted 9226 metric tonnes of cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL), generating revenues US$825.89 million and US$6.18 million respectively. Cashew Export Promotion Council of India have offices in Kollam, Kochi and Mangalore. There are 238 registered cashew exporters in Cashew Export Promotion Council of India as members. In that, more than 200 exporters are based in Kollam. An examination of the records show that Kilikollur, a suburb of Kollam city, had the most cashew processing factories.

Krist Raj Higher Secondary School (or Krist Raj HSS/KRHSS ) is one of the oldest schools in Kollam District, India, situated about 1 km east of Kollam Junction Railway Station. Built in the year 1948, the school offers classes from 5th Standard to Higher Secondary level.

Fatima Mata National College is a college in the Indian state of Kerala, named after Our Lady of Fatima, a Catholic title of Virgin Mary. The college was ranked 92nd in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework in 2022.

Karbala is an important neighbourhood and educational institutions area in Kollam city, India. It is situated at the central region of the city. The place is very close to Kollam Junction railway station. Several government offices and colleges are situated at Karbala area.

Kollam MEMU Shed is an ISO certified motive power depot facility for maintaining MEMU rakes, situated in the city of Kollam in the Indian state of Kerala. It is one of the four MEMU rake maintenance sheds serving the Southern Railway zone of the Indian Railways. Kollam MEMU Shed is functioning as the control and coordination center of MEMU trains running through Kerala state.

Pattathanam is a residential area in the city of Kollam in Kerala, southwest India. It is located 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) from Chinnakkada, the commercial hub of Kollam city. It is home to various educational institutions. The Latin Catholic (Roman Catholic Latin Church) Bharata Rajni Church, Subrahmanya Swami Temple, Ammannada Ardhanarishvara temple (Family temple of Kaliyilil puthen veedu earlier and presently run by NSS), St. John's Marthoma Church, St. Thomas CSI Church are located in Pattathanam.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Police Museum is a museum that traces the history and growth of the police force in India. It is located just opposite the Kollam Junction Railway Station in Kollam, India. The museum is dedicated to barrister and statesman, Vallabhbhai Patel.

Kollam Junction railway station (station code: QLN) is an NSG–2 category Indian railway station in Thiruvananthapuram railway division of Southern Railway zone.) It is a junction station situated in the city of Kollam in Kerala, India. It is the second largest railway station in Kerala in terms of area and largest in terms of number of tracks and one of the oldest railway stations in the state. It is also the second busiest railway station in Kerala in terms of trains handled per day. World's third longest railway platform is situated at Kollam railway station. Kollam Junction lies on Kollam–Thiruvananthapuram trunk line. It is operated by the Southern Railway zone of the Indian Railways and comes under the Thiruvananthapuram railway division. The annual passenger ticket revenue of Kollam railway station is ₹103.07 crore (US$12 million) and 23,048 is the daily ridership through this station. It is one among the few railway stations in Kerala having two terminals with ticket counter facility. Four express trains have been originating from Kollam Junction railway station to South Indian cities of Chennai, Visakhapatnam and Tirupati: Visakhapatnam–Kollam Express (weekly), Anantapuri Express (daily), Chennai Egmore–Kollam Junction Express (daily), and Kollam–Tirupati Express (weekly).
