Market House Square District

On Monday, August 28, 2000, James Easton Kelly, 37, a disgruntled graduate student at the University of Arkansas, shot and killed his faculty advisor, Prof. John R. Locke, and then committed suicide shortly afterwards. The murder-suicide was the first incident of its type in the university's history.

The Market House is a Market house and town hall in the center of Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina. It was built in 1838 on the site of the old state house and Town Hall which burned down in 1831. Fayetteville was the capital of North Carolina from 1789 to 1794. It has an arcaded open ground level, and a meeting hall above in a standard market house format which originated in the British Isles and is also common in New England. It served both as a town hall and general market until the early 20th century, and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1973. The upper floor now houses a museum. A study completed by Duke University professor John Cavanagh noted that "sales [near this location] were spaced on the average about two months apart, if that frequently, and in most instances very few slaves were involved in each transaction".Because of its history as a general trading and market place, it is assumed that slaves were also traded there. It was also widely used as a market for goods and livestock which sometimes included human chattel. On May 30, 2020, protestors attempted to set the building on fire with the fire quickly quenched resulting in only minor damage.

It encompasses 113 contributing buildings, 3 contributing sites, 1 contributing structure, and 2 contributing objects in the central business district of Fayetteville. The district includes commercial buildings, government and civic buildings, railroad-related structures, residential dwellings, churches and the Cross Creek Cemetery. They range in build date from the 1780s to 1949. The district includes the previously listed Liberty Row and Market House Square District and 16 resources listed as part of the "Historic Resources of Fayetteville," a Multiple Resource Nomination.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

Cumberland County Courthouse is a historic courthouse building located at Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina. It was designed by architect Harry Barton and built in 1925–1926. It is a three-story, rectangular, Classical Revival style building sheathed in ashlar veneer.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Liberty Row is a national historic district located at Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina. It encompasses 14 contributing buildings and 1 contributing site in the central business district of Fayetteville. The district includes consists of a block of 14 brick row buildings dating between 1791 and 1916. The Liberty Point Store is the oldest structure and is a two-story, five-bay, Federal style brick building.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It is incorporated into the Fayetteville Downtown Historic District.

First Baptist Church is a historic Baptist church located at 200 Old Street in Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina. It was built between 1906 and 1910, and is a Romanesque Revival style brick church. It has a gable front flanked by towers of unequal size.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Waddill's Store, also known as Bernard's Men's Shop, is a historic commercial building located at Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina. It was built about 1850, and is a three-story, three-bay, Greek Revival style brick building. It has a gable front and once had a three-tiered front porch. It originally housed a general merchandise store.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

The Capitol, also known as The Capitol Department Store, is a historic department store building located at Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina. The original store was established at this site in 1921, with an existing two-story building incorporated into it in 1936. In 1949, the existing building was doubled in size by a large rear addition. The most notable feature is the 60-foot (18 m) wide Modern Movement storefront added in 1955. It features marble facing, a recessed storefront, a large convex full-height window in the second story, and large aluminum script lettering for The Capitol. The Capitol, the last department store remaining in downtown Fayetteville, closed in March 1990.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

U.S. Post Office is a historic post office building located at Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina. It was built between 1909 and 1911, and is a one-story, five-bay, Classical Revival style brick building. A wing was added in 1935. It housed a post office into the 1960s, after which it was used as a branch library.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Evans Metropolitan AME Zion Church is a historic African Methodist Episcopal church located at 301 N. Cool Spring Street in Fayetteville, Cumberland County, North Carolina. It was built in 1893–1894, and is a five bay, rectangular brick building in the Gothic Revival style. The front facade features flanking towers. Also on the property is a contributing house built in 1913 used as an office/administration building. It is a two-story frame house with a hipped roof and wraparound porch.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

St. John's Episcopal Church in Fayetteville, North Carolina is a congregation of the Episcopal Diocese of East Carolina, a division of the Episcopal Church in the United States of America. Founded in 1817, it is located on Green Street in historic downtown Fayetteville. The congregation was formally organized April 7, 1817, and it became the first Episcopal church in the city. It is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Public tours are available by appointment.

It was built about 1853, and is a two-story trapezoidal-shaped Greek Revival style brick building.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
