Lopper I Rail Tunnel

The Lopper Road Tunnel is a tunnel in central Switzerland. The tunnel connects Hergiswil in the canton of Nidwalden with Alpnach in the canton of Obwalden, and forms part of the A8 motorway. The tunnel was opened in 1984, and is 1,590 metres (5,220 ft) long. The tunnel has two lanes (one in each direction), and there is no central reservation. The tunnel runs under the Lopper, a shoulder of Mount Pilatus which extends into Lake Lucerne.The northern portal of the Lopper Tunnel is near to that of the Kirchenwald Tunnel on the A2 motorway, and most of the junction between the two motorways lies to the north of their respective portals. However the link for westbound traffic from the A2 to the A8 utilises a 350 metres (1,150 ft) long single-lane link tunnel within the mountain between the two main motorway tunnels.The Lopper I railway tunnel, on the Zentralbahn Brünig line, parallels the Lopper road tunnel. The Lopper II railway tunnel, on the Zentralbahn Luzern–Stans–Engelberg line, parallels the Kirchenwald road tunnel.

Hergiswil railway station is a Swiss railway station in the municipality of Hergiswil in the canton of Nidwalden. It is at the junction of the Brünig line, which links Lucerne and Interlaken, and the Luzern–Stans–Engelberg line. Both lines are of metre gauge and owned by the Zentralbahn railway company. To the south of the station the Brünig line enters the Lopper I tunnel to Alpnach whilst the Luzern–Stans–Engelberg line enters the Lopper II tunnel to Stansstad.Hergiswil station is one of two stations to serve Hergiswil, the other being Hergiswil Matt, which is on the Brünig line some 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) to the north.

The Lopper II Rail Tunnel is a railway tunnel in the canton of Nidwalden in central Switzerland. It forms part of the Zentralbahn Luzern–Stans–Engelberg line, which links Lucerne with Engelberg, between Hergiswil station and Stansstad station. It is 1,743 metres (5,719 ft) in length, and carries metre gauge (1,000 mm or 3 ft 3+3⁄8 in) track electrified at 11 kV AC 16 2/3 Hz using overhead catenary. The tunnel runs under the Lopper, a shoulder of Mount Pilatus which extends into Lake Lucerne, and immediately on leaving the tunnel the line crosses a bridge over the Alpnachersee arm of Lake Lucerne before entering Stansstad station.The Lopper II Tunnel is paralleled by the Kirchenwald Tunnel carrying the A2 motorway. The nearby Lopper Tunnel I is a rail tunnel on the Zentralbahn Brünig line, the two rail lines joining at Hergiswil station.

The Rengg Pass (locally known as Ränggpass) is a walking trail mountain pass in Switzerland, between Hergiswil in the canton of Nidwalden and Alpnach in the canton of Obwalden. It crosses the ridge running eastwards from the Pilatus towards Stanstaad. It was the site of the Stecklikrieg battle on 28 August 1802, where insurgent Nidwaldeners defeated Swiss central government troops.

Hergiswil Matt railway station is a Swiss railway station in the municipality of Hergiswil in the canton of Nidwalden. It is on the Brünig line of the Zentralbahn railway company, which links Lucerne and Interlaken, and is also used by trains of the Luzern–Stans–Engelberg line.Hergiswil Matt station is one of two stations to serve Hergiswil, the other being Hergiswil, which is on the Brünig line some 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) to the south.

The Schrattenkalk Formation is a Barremian to Aptian geologic formation in the Alps. The limestone is highly karstified. Fossil ornithopod tracks have been reported from the formation. Iguanodont tracks have been registered in the Swiss portion of the formation. The famous north face of the Eiger is partly composed of Schrattenkalk, as well as the Sturmannshöhle in southernmost Bavaria, Germany, and the Hölloch (second-longest cave in Europe) and Silberen system karst caves in Switzerland.

Mueterschwanderberg (also Mueterschwandenberg) is a ridge forming the southern shore of Alpnachersee, just northwest of Stanserhorn and west of the village of Ennetmoos, Nidwalden, Switzerland. Its peak is at an elevation of 860 m (some 425 m above the lake surface). The peak is known as Drachenflue (Drachenfluh), with the Drachenloch cave nearby, named for the dragon which according to legend was slain here by Heinrich von Winkelried. Mueterschwanderberg is known for the historical artillery fortress built into the mountain, constructed during the Second World War, during 1941 to 1944. Mueterschwanderberg was the largest such fortress in Switzerland. It remained in service throughout the Cold War period. Its decommission was decided in 1998, and it was dismantled in 2007.

Stansstad railway station is a Swiss railway station in the municipality of Stansstad in the canton of Nidwalden. It is on the Luzern–Stans–Engelberg line, owned by the Zentralbahn railway company, and is adjacent to the bridge that carries the line across the Alpnachersee arm of Lake Lucerne and into the Lopper II tunnel.The current railway station is the second to exist in Stansstad, having been built as a through station on the section of line opened in 1964 to connect the then Stansstad–Engelberg line to the Brünig line at Hergiswil. The original Stansstad station was a terminus, located on the lake side some 500 m (1,600 ft) to the north of the current station. The original station building still exists, now devoid of rails but still used by lake shipping. The old and new routes converge on the Stans side of Stansstad, but little trace is left of the old route.

The Sarner Aa is a 28 km (17 mi) long river in the Swiss canton of Obwalden. It drains the area to the eastern side of the Brünig Pass, flowing through the Lake Lungern, Lake Sarnen and the Wichelsee, before entering Lake Lucerne near Alpnach. It goes by several names over its length, being known as the Lauibach upstream of the Lungerersee, and the Aa or Aawasser between the Lungerersee and Lake Sarnen.Along its length, the Sarner Aa flows through or near the settlements of Lungern, Giswil, Sachseln, Sarnen, Kerns and Alpnach.The Brünig railway line follows the valley of the Sarner Aa in its descent from the Brünig Pass towards Lucerne.

The Schnitzturm is a stone tower in the municipality of Stansstad in the canton of Nidwalden in Switzerland. It is part of the Teller / Palisaden medieval fortifications which are a Swiss heritage site of national significance.

Rotzberg or Rotzburg is a ruined castle in the municipality of Ennetmoos in the canton of Nidwalden in Switzerland.
