First Falls (Adelaide Hills, South Australia)

The Black Sunday bushfires were a series of bushfires that broke out across South Australia on 2 January 1955. Extreme morning temperatures coupled with strong north-westerly winds contributed to the breakout of numerous fires in Adelaide Hills, Jamestown, Waterloo, Kingston and Millicent. Most were caused by sparks from powerlines in the wind.Around 1,000 Emergency Fire Service volunteers from 60 brigades were tasked to the fires, but were overwhelmed. At 10am, the EFS head office requested urgent public assistance. Around 2,500 citizens volunteered. The fires were contained by 9:30pm, thanks largely to a fortuitous change in the weather and widespread public assistance.The fires resulted in two deaths, destroyed 40 homes and numerous other buildings, and caused more than A$4 million worth of property damage, most notably the destruction of the Governor's summer residence at Marble Hill. Governor Robert George, his family and staff were lucky to escape with their lives. The Premier, Sir Thomas Playford, also narrowly escaped death, sheltering with five other men in a patch of hoed earth near Cherryville. The burnt area was estimated at as much as 160,000 hectares (600 sq mi) stretching from One Tree Hill to Strathalbyn; however, other sources put the area at closer to 39,000 hectares (150 sq mi).

The Adelaide Hills region is located in the southern Mount Lofty Ranges east of the city of Adelaide in the state of South Australia. The largest town in the area, Mount Barker is one of Australia's fastest-growing towns. Before British colonisation of South Australia, the area was inhabited by the Peramangk people. The Adelaide Hills wine region comprises areas of the Adelaide Hills above 300 m (980 ft).

The first Ash Wednesday fires were a series of bushfires that began in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia, on Ash Wednesday, 20 February 1980. 51 homes and 25 other buildings were destroyed, including the Anglican Christ Church, Longwood, and 75 farms were affected. 40 people were injured, with 150 left homeless. The fire burnt an area of 3,770 ha (14.6 sq mi), and caused an estimated $34,000,000 damage.In 1983, after the Ash Wednesday fires in February that year, the 1980 fire became known in South Australia as the "first" Ash Wednesday, or Ash Wednesday I.

Morialta Conservation Park, formerly the Morialta Falls Reserve and the Morialta Falls National Pleasure Resort, is a protected area 10 km north-east of Adelaide city centre, in the state of South Australia, Australia. The park is in a rugged bush environment, with a narrow gorge set with three waterfalls, bounded by steep ridges and cliffs. The park caters to many activities, including bushwalking, bird watching and rock climbing. The name is probably derived from the Kaurna name Marriyarta, meaning "eastern land or country".

Norton Summit (formerly Norton's Summit) is a town in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia, located approximately 12 km east of the city of Adelaide. The town is named after Robert Norton, who arrived in South Australia shortly after its proclamation, and made the first recorded climb in the area in 1836.It is well known for the popular Scenic Hotel, founded in the 1870s, often considered one of the best pubs in Adelaide. Another landmark is St. John's Church, founded with the assistance of the Baker family at around the same time.The Morialta Protestant Children's Home was established in 1924 on nearby land, part of John Baker's estate, closed in 1972. The Playford family have long been residents of the area. The Rev. Thomas Playford, a Waterloo veteran turned preacher, settled in the area in 1840s. His son (Thomas Playford II) and great-grandson (Thomas Playford IV) both became Premier of South Australia. Thomas Playford IV is the longest serving Premier in South Australia's history, from 1938 to 1965. His statue stands in the centre of the township.Norton Summit is one of the most popular cycling climbs in Australia.

Teringie is a suburb of Adelaide in South Australia. It occupies a commanding position in the Adelaide Hills and overlooks the plains on which most of the city is built. Teringie's small number of houses (less than 100 in total) are mostly large, bush-covered blocks. The suburb is steadily growing with new houses popping up continually.A large portion of the land was originally owned by RM Williams, remains of his original brick factory still form part of a residential property on Norton Summit Road, the now subdivided blocks still owned by descendants of RM Williams. Other previous notable residents include: Giuseppe Capogreco arrived in Australia in 1955 from Italy and purchased a parcel of land in Teringie for his wine making ventures. Capogreco's wines were initially produced for distribution within the local community, but as word of mouth spread over the years, the wine's reputation spread far and wide, and supply succumbed to the limits of production. Vinyards are still present and operating in the area today under the Teringie Estate Wines banner which has branched as far as China. Harry Clisby – an engineer who's designs inspired Ferrari and assisted Jack Brabham's Formula One success. Mr Clisby built a large medieval castle style residence which included a miniature railway, almost rolercoaster. Mr Clisby built most of the residence himself which took over 15 years to complete. Teringie was originally a private subdivision. The name was approved in 1978 by the Geographical Names Board in lieu of the original proposal of Teringie Heights following the stated preference of the local council. The name is of Aboriginal origin meaning place of beautiful birds. (Citation required please) The western end of the suburb comprises some higher density housing with still most residences being large and situated on larger than average land parcels. The further eastern part comprises mostly the larger bushland covered blocks some of which run into the large valleys. The suburb is bordered to the north by Morialta Conservation Park and the south by suburbs, Norton Summit, Horsnell Gully, Skye and Auldana. The notable power lines running overhead have created some controversy as some believe that they are detrimental to health. Teringie is serviced by the East Torrens CFS – Ashton brigade. A wealth of wildlife exists close by: koalas, kangaroos, possums, echidnas, and a great variety of birdlife including yellow-tail and red-tail black cockatoos. The Dickson House (1950) is the residence of architect Robert Dickson and his partner Lilian, located at Wandilla Drive in Rostrevor, South Australia. The house design commenced in 1949, three years into his architectural studies and in 1951 he took a year off to build it.: 14  Situated on a sloping side opposite the Morialta Conservation Park, the site characteristics, topography, orientation, views and approach dictate the planning arrangement, while responding to local materials and a limited budget. In 2009 the house was listed as a state heritage place on the South Australian Heritage Register, a gratifying achievement for Dickson as a simple contemporary, student-designed house built in 1950 is not commonly associated with heritage listing.: 33  Its significance is reported as follows:Dickson House at Rostrevor has unique and significant associations with the life and work of Robert Dickson, and demonstrates a high degree of creative, aesthetic and technical accomplishment as well as being an influential representative of modern organic design and construction. In particular, the way in which the place relates to its site, its outstanding quality and integrity, and the fact that it has been internationally recognised as one of Australia's most architecturally-notable mid-20th-century houses provide it with outstanding significance in the context of South Australia's architectural development. Rostrevor College is an independent Catholic primary and secondary day and boarding school for boys, located in Woodforde, a suburb of Adelaide, South Australia, approximately 9 kilometres (6 mi) from the Adelaide city centre. The school was established in 1923 by the Christian Brothers. Its founder and first headmaster was Br David Purton. The school currently enrols approximately 850 local and international students from Reception to year 12, including 90 boarders in Years 8 to 12. The students are divided into Junior (R-6), Middle (7–9) and Senior (10–12) Years, who together share a 16-hectare (40-acre) campus situated in the Morialta foothills. Rostrevor College is a member of the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia (AHISA), the Australian Boarding Schools' Association, the Junior School Heads Association of Australia (JSHAA), and the Independent Schools Sport Association (ISSA).

The Magill Youth Training Centre (more correctly Magill Training Centre), also known as the Boys Reformatory, McNally Training Centre and South Australian Youth Training Centre (SAYTC) since its founding in 1869, was the last iteration of a series of reformatories or youth detention centres in Woodforde, South Australia. The centre came under criticism in the 2000s for "barbaric" and "degrading" conditions and was replaced by a new 60-bed youth training centre at Cavan in 2012.

Rostrevor is a suburb of Adelaide within the City of Campbelltown and the Adelaide Hills Council. It is located about 10 kilometres east-north-east of the Adelaide city centre. Rostrevor has a creek running through the middle of it, called Fourth Creek, which runs into the River Torrens. Rostrevor is in the State House of Assembly Electoral district of Morialta and is in the Federal Division of Sturt. It was named after the village of Rostrevor in Northern Ireland. Some of the facilities in Rostrevor include Stradbroke School, Foodland, Rostrevor Baptist Church, and a nature playground in Morialta Conservation Park.Campbelltown City Council has an active boundary change proposal in place to incorporate the Adelaide Hills Council part of Rostrevor along with part of neighbouring Woodforde into its boundaries. This is despite an overwhelming 65% majority of residents and ratepayers opposing it in a survey conducted in 2019.

Woodforde is a suburb of Adelaide within the Adelaide Hills Council. It is located about 10 km east of the Adelaide city centre. Woodforde is in the State House of Assembly Electoral district of Morialta and is in the Federal Division of Mayo. The Catholic boys' school Rostrevor College is located in the suburb. Campbelltown City Council has an active boundary change proposal in place to incorporate part of this suburb along with a part of Rostrevor into its boundaries. This is despite an overwhelming 65% majority of residents and ratepayers opposing it in a survey conducted in 2019.
