Iffley Road rugby football ground

The Roger Bannister running track, also known as the Oxford University track, is a 400-metres athletics running track and stadium in Oxford, England. It was where Sir Roger Bannister broke the four-minute mile on 6 May 1954, when it was known as the Iffley Road track. The track is owned and operated by the University of Oxford.

Iffley Road is a major arterial road in Oxford, England. It leads from the Plain, near Magdalen Bridge, southeast towards the village of Iffley. While it becomes Henley Avenue at Iffley Turn, and then Rose Hill, the whole stretch from the ring road to the Plain is referred to by some as Iffley Road. Formerly named as Henley Road in the 19th century, as it leads towards Henley-on-Thames, this entire route is designated the A4158. The road is the location for the Oxford University athletics venue, the Iffley Road Track, where Roger Bannister was the first person to run a mile in under four minutes, on 6 May 1954. The feat is commemorated by blue plaque on Iffley Road. The track is next door to Iffley Road rugby ground, home of Oxford University Rugby Football Club. Also in Iffley Road is Greyfriars, a Capucin priory that was formerly a permanent private hall of the University of Oxford. The Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics is based at 91 Iffley Road, and the headquarters of Transun are to be found at the start of the road. There are a number of public houses including the Cape of Good Hope at the Plain and 1 Iffley Road, the Cricketers' Arms, now a cocktail bar renamed The Mad Hatter in 2013, and the Fir Tree Tavern.

Greyfriars is a Roman Catholic friary and parish located in East Oxford, which until 2008 was also a permanent private hall of the University of Oxford. Situated on the Iffley Road in East Oxford, it was one of the smallest constituent halls of the university. Its status as a permanent private hall (PPH) referred to the fact that it was governed by an outside institution (the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, a Franciscan religious order), rather than by its fellows as is college. In 2007 the decision was made to close the hall, with students transferred to Regent's Park College. The buildings continue to host the friary which formerly co-existed with the hall. Greyfriars has one of the most distinctive buildings in Oxford; it is the only flint-stone Norman-style building in the city, and its green spire is prominently visible along the Iffley Road and from the university's Roger Bannister running track.

St John the Evangelist Church is a non-parochial church on Iffley Road in Oxford, England. It was built as the community church of the mother house of the Anglican religious order known as the Society of St. John the Evangelist (SSJE, aka the Cowley Fathers). Since 1980 it has served also as one of the college chapels of St Stephen's House, Oxford.The building was designed by G. F. Bodley (1827–1907) predominantly in a Decorated Gothic style and built in 1894–96. Its aisles and chancel have pinnacled flying buttresses. The castellated west tower was added in 1902. The east, west and north-east windows contain stained glass designed by C. E. Kempe (1837–1907) and made in about 1900.The Church contains a set of Stations of the Cross, by the leading late Pre-Raphaelite artist Edward Arthur Fellowes Prynne. Representing the pinnacle of his painted devotional work, Prynne thought that the Church “afforded a unique opportunity by reason of the splendid wall-space" and regarded the commission as “a very great pleasure and high privilege." The striking – although not unproblematic – set of images was finally installed in the Church in 1921. The painting of "Jesus Christ Condemned to Death” was based on an earlier picture by the artist painted in 1898, and now held by St Peter's Church, Ealing.In 1980, the Society of St John the Evangelist prepared to close its Oxford chapter and relocate all its activities to St Edward's House, in London. At that time, St Stephen's House moved from its buildings in Norham Gardens to the monastic buildings of the SSJE, which were well-suited for a theological college. The SSJE's buildings included the Mission House on Marston Street, St John the Evangelist Church, and the extension to the Mission House that connected the earlier building to the chapel and to the church with a refectory and cloister. The church's architect G. F. Bodley also worked on the adjoining cloisters, college buildings, chapel, and old mission house. The Sunday Mass is celebrated in the church during Oxford's academic year. St John the Evangelist Church is a listed building which underwent some refurbishment and restoration in 2008, including the provision of underfloor heating. Since 2012, SJE Arts Oxford has been running musical and arts events in the church.The church is opposite the Roger Bannister running track. When Roger Bannister (1929–2018) ran the first ever sub-four-minute mile at the track on 6 May 1954, he used the St George's flag on top of the church tower to determine that the wind was low enough to make an attempt on this record.

Christ Church Ground is a cricket ground in Oxford, England. The ground is owned by Christ Church, a constituent college of the University of Oxford. Privately owned, it was the preferred venue in Oxford for matches where a gated admission was to be levied on spectators, typically in matches between Oxford University and a touring international team. The ground was a first-class cricket venue from 1878 to 1961, hosting 37 first-class matches. After 1961, the University Parks became the preferred venue for all first-class matches in Oxford, but it remained in use in minor counties and one-day cricket by Oxfordshire until the start of the 21st century and hosted a Women's One Day International during the 1993 Women's Cricket World Cup.

St Stephen's House is an Anglican theological college in Oxford, England. From 2003 to 2023 it was a permanent private hall of the University of Oxford.The college typically matriculates a small number of undergraduate students (just 5 in the academic year 2022-23), but has graduate students in a number of fields including theology, Byzantine studies, education, and music. Between 2003 and 2023, roughly one quarter of the students were pursuing professional training as classroom teachers, and another quarter professional theological and ministerial training as priests, with the other half following a diverse range of studies and research, many remotely or on a flexible basis.

Aston's Eyot is a 33-acre (13 ha) island on the east bank of the River Thames in the city of Oxford, England, southeast of Christ Church Meadow.Eyot is another spelling of ait meaning small island. The island is roughly triangular, bounded to the northwest by the River Cherwell and to the southeast by the Shirelake Ditch. There is a mixture of habitats, part woodland, part open/scrub. The site is leased by Oxford City Council from Christ Church. At the turn of the 19th/20th centuries it was used as a rubbish tip.

The Ultimate Picture Palace is an independent cinema in Oxford, England. It is Oxford's only surviving independent cinema, showing a mixture of independent, mainstream, foreign language, and classic films. The cinema has been a Grade II listed building since 1994.

Magdalen College School (MCS) is a private day school in the English public school tradition located in Oxford, England, for boys aged seven to eighteen and for girls in the sixth form ie sixteen to eighteen. It was founded by William Waynflete about 1480 as part of Magdalen College, Oxford. The school is run by a headmaster, known since the foundation of the school simply as "the Master" and controlled by a Board of Governors, who appoint the Master. It has both a senior school and a junior school. The Senior School has six houses, names after old attendees of the school who died in the first or second world wars. Each house is headed by a housemaster selected from the senior members of the teaching staff, of whom there are about 160. There are also six houses in the Junior School. The school was named Independent School of the Year by The Sunday Times in 2004, and 2008, being the first boys' school to attain this accolade twice.

St Hilda's College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford in England. The college is named after the Anglo-Saxon saint Hilda of Whitby and was founded in 1893 as a hall for women; it remained a women's college until 2008. St Hilda's was the last single-sex college in the university as Somerville College had admitted men in 1994. The college now has almost equal numbers of men and women at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. The principal of the college is Professor Sarah Springman, who took office in 2022.As of 2018, the college had an endowment of £52.1 million and total assets of £113.4 million.

The Royal Microscopical Society (RMS) is a learned society for the promotion of microscopy. It was founded in 1839 as the Microscopical Society of London making it the oldest organisation of its kind in the world. In 1866, the society gained its royal charter and took its current name. Founded as a society of amateurs, its membership consists of individuals of all skill levels in numerous related fields from throughout the world. Every year since 1841, the society has published its own scientific journal, the Journal of Microscopy, which contains peer-reviewed papers and book reviews. The society is a registered charity that is dedicated to advancing science, developing careers and supporting wider understanding of science and microscopy through its Outreach activities. Probably the society's greatest contribution is its standardised 3x1 inches microscope glass slides in 1840, which are still the most widely used size today and known as the "RMS standard".The Royal Microscopical Society is a member of the Foundation for Science and Technology, the European Microscopy Society and the International Federation of Societies for Microscopy.

The Plain is an important junction, now a roundabout constructed in 1950, just east of Magdalen Bridge in Oxford, England. To the east and southeast are St Clement's, Cowley Road and Iffley Road which leads to the Liddell Buildings of Christ Church on the other side of the Christ Church Meadow. Magdalen College School is to the south. Cowley Place, also to the south, leads to St Hilda's College, the most easterly college of the University of Oxford. The Plain received its name after the parish church of St Clement's which stood here until 1829. The roundabout is the site of the former churchyard.
