Garlieston

Garlieston is the closed terminus of the Garlieston branch of Wigtownshire Railway; running from a junction at Millisle. It served the coastal village and harbour of Garlieston in Wigtownshire. The Garlieston branch, together with the rest of the Wigtownshire Railway, closed completely in 1964. The Wigtownshire Railway was itself a branch of the Portpatrick and Wigtownshire Joint Railway; running from a junction at Newton Stewart to Whithorn.

Galloway House is a Category A listed country house in Sorbie, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.

Millisle, later Millisle for Garlieston was a railway station that was near the junction for Garlieston on the Wigtownshire Railway branch line, from Newton Stewart to Whithorn, of the Portpatrick and Wigtownshire Joint Railway. It served a rural area in Wigtownshire. The line was closed to passenger services in 1950, and to goods in 1964.

Broughton Skeog (NX4554444071) was a railway station that was located near level crossing gates over a minor road on the Wigtownshire Railway branch line, from Newton Stewart, of the Portpatrick and Wigtownshire Joint Railway. It served a rural area in Wigtownshire and was named after the nearby farm. Although the station closed as far back as 1885 the line was not closed to passenger services until 1950, and to goods in 1964.

Sorbie Tower is a fortified tower house 1 mile east of the village of Sorbie, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. The ancient seat of the Clan Hannay, it is in an L-shaped format, rubble-built in the late sixteenth century, possibly by Patrick Hannay. The poet and courtier at the court of James VI, Patrick Hannay was a member of this family. It was sold to the Earl of Galloway in 1677, and when the last of the line died in 1748 the tower became ruinous. It was given to the Clan Hannay by its owner in 1965. It remains to second floor level, although notably for a building of this kind there is no wall-walk or parapet. It is a scheduled monument. There are plans to restore it.The structure can be viewed both from the outside, free of charge, or, if you go to Garlieston Village and enquire within the village shop, you can go inside.

Wigtown Bay is a large inlet of the Irish Sea on the coast of Galloway in southwest Scotland. Its coastline falls entirely within the modern administrative area of Dumfries and Galloway and shared between the historical counties of Wigtownshire and Kirkcudbrightshire. The bay is broadly triangular in form, widening to the southeast and with the estuary of the River Cree entering from the northwest at its head. The inner parts of the bay are characterized by large expanses of salt marsh and mudflats. The River Bladnoch flows into the estuarial section of the Cree near Wigtown. The Water of Fleet is a third significant river which enters Wigtown Bay via Fleet Bay on its eastern shore. At the mouth of Fleet Bay are the Islands of Fleet include Ardwall Island, Barlocco Isle and Murray’s Isles. The western shore of the bay is formed by The Machars peninsula. This coast is itself indented by Rigg (or Cruggleton) Bay and by Garlieston Bay on which the village of Garlieston sits. The small town of Wigtown also stands on the western shore of the bay whilst the village of Creetown lies at the head of the bay. Wigtown Bay forms the largest local nature reserve in Britain. It has also been designated as a site of special scientific interest. A proposal to construct an offshore windfarm in Wigtown Bay was turned down by the Scottish government in early 2011. The potential effect on tourism was cited as a major reason in the decision.

Sorbie (Scottish Gaelic: Soirbidh) is a small village in Wigtownshire, Machars, within the Administration area of Dumfries and Galloway Council, Scotland.It is located midway between Wigtown and Whithorn on the A714 road. Farming forms the principal local industry in the area. The Sorbie Village Hall is used by a number of groups.Sorbie Parish Church, in the centre of the village, dates from around 1755 and is a large T-plan structure, now de-roofed. Millisle Church, 1 km west of Garlieston, was designed by Alan Stewart, the 10th Earl of Galloway (1835 - 1901). A junction on the Wigtownshire Railway opened in Millisle in 1876. Sorbie Railway Station on the Wigtownshire Railway branch of the Portpatrick and Wigtownshire Joint Railway which closed in the 1964 formerly served Sorbie village. For many years Sorbie had a creamery located beside the railway station, some of whose products were once exported via the port at nearby Garlieston. The creamery finally closed in the 1990s and the site occupied by a granite works. Galloway Granite has now relocated to Newton Stewart and the works now appear to be abandoned and in a state of dereliction.

Ravenshall Wood is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, located 5 kilometres east of Creetown in the historic county of Kirkcudbrightshire, Dumfries and Galloway, in southwest Scotland. It is on the lower part of the Kirkdale Estate. It is rich in lichens. It is largely oak woodland. It also has Wych Elm, Ash, Hazel, Willow, Sycamore, Gene, Thorn, Elderberry. It does also possess rhododendron which is being eradicated.

Kirkdale Bridge is a bridge over the Kirkdale Burn in the parish of Kirkmabreck, between Gatehouse of Fleet and Creetown in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It was built for Sir Samuel Hannay, based on designs drawn up by Robert Adam, but the execution was much simpler than Adam had originally envisaged, probably to reduce the construction costs. The bridge was designated a Category A listed building in 1971. Several other buildings on the estate, also designed by Adam, are also listed as Category A, in separate designations.

Whithorn is the closed terminus of the Wigtownshire Railway branch, from Newton Stewart, of the Portpatrick and Wigtownshire Joint Railway. It served the town of Whithorn in Wigtownshire. The line was closed to passenger services in 1950, and to goods in 1964.

Sorbie (NX4351447562) was a railway station that was located close to the village of Sorbie on the then Wigtownshire Railway branch line to Whithorn, from Newton Stewart, later becoming the Portpatrick and Wigtownshire Joint Railway. It served a very rural district in Wigtownshire, however it lay next to a creamery, a waulk mill and Creech Mill. The station closed for passengers in 1950, and the line closed to goods in 1964.

Barholm Castle is a tower house located 5 miles (8.0 km) south-west of Gatehouse of Fleet, in Kirkcudbrightshire, Galloway, Scotland. The tower dates back to the late 15th century, and it was a stronghold of a branch of the MacCulloch family. The present form of the castle dates from rebuilding in the 16th or 17th century, and in the early 2000s it was restored from a roofless state to residential use. The tower is sometimes identified with the fictional Ellangowan, in Sir Walter Scott's Guy Mannering.
