Moorfields Eye Hospital

The UCL Institute of Ophthalmology is an institute within the Faculty of Brain Sciences of University College London (UCL) and is based in London, United Kingdom. The institute conducts research and post-graduate teaching in the area of ophthalmology (the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the eye). The institute has a staff of around 200, including around 45 principal investigators, and cooperates closely with Moorfields Eye Hospital, which it is located adjacent to and with which it is a partner in the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre for Ophthalmology. Together with Moorfields Eye Hospital, the institute is the oldest and largest centre for ophthalmic treatment, teaching and research in Europe.

St Luke's Hospital for Lunatics was founded in London in 1751 for the treatment of incurable pauper lunatics by a group of philanthropic apothecaries and others. It was the second public institution in London created to look after mentally ill people, after the Hospital of St. Mary of Bethlem (Bedlam), founded in 1246.

Pearce & Plenty was a chain of working class restaurants in London, formed in the late 19th century. Its motto was "Quality, Economy, Despatch".The company was started by John Pearce as a coffee stall on the corner of East Road and City Road, which he operated from 1866 to 1879. He opened a shop in Aldersgate in 1879, moving it to Farringdon Street in 1882, and the company had 46 refreshment rooms by the 1890s. 14 were attached to hotels. According to The Caterer it catered to poor workers with "large appetites but small means", serving an average of 40,000 meals a day. The restaurants served coffee, tea and cocoa. Beef pudding was a popular dish.Most of the chain's patrons were workmen, the New Penny Magazine describing them as a "shouting, swallowing throng of newsboys, printers' "devils", bricklayers' labourers, carters and sweeps". Pearce went on to create another restaurant chain, "British Tea Table", aimed at city clerks.

The Royal Grecian Theatre was a theatre on the corner of City Road and Shepherdess Walk, in Shoreditch, north London. Originally built in 1821 as the Eagle tavern, by 1832 a pavilion had been built in its grounds known as the Grecian Saloon. The saloon was rebuilt in 1841 and became a theatre proper. In 1851 Benjamin Conquest became proprietor. It became the Royal Grecian in 1858 after receiving a license. The musical directorship of the Grecian changed hands in 1870, general musical director William Edroff died leaving his son Andrew to direct the bands in the ballroom and on the outdoor platform. Edward Barrett, however had been the leader of the theatre orchestra. Barrett's son Oscar took over music for the dramas and pantomimes in 1870. Alterations in 1858 made it a 2500-seat theatre. In 1877 a new 4000-seat theatre was built on the site of the old ballroom. In 1882 the buildings were put up for auction, and bought by the Salvation Army. The theatre was eventually demolished in 1900 and rebuilt as The Eagle pub, which is still extant at 2 Shepherdess Walk, London N1 7LB. The nursery rhyme Pop Goes the Weasel refers to the old tavern:

Old Street Roundabout is a road junction in Central London, England. Historically a square roundabout, it is now a three-way junction. It is among access points of the Inner Ring Road for the adjoining St Luke's south part of Islington and the City of London beyond, west and south, respectively. It is roughly on the western limit of Shoreditch in the London Borough of Hackney which straddles both sides of the Ring Road, a road which after taking up a little of the eastern part of Old Street then veers south-east, taking Great Eastern Street, at Apex Junction. It is sometimes known as St. Agnes Well after the shopping centre beneath it, while the moniker of Silicon Roundabout owes to the local prominence of technology companies. Since October 2020 the layout has been a simple junction, not gyratory.

East London Tech City (also known as Tech City and Silicon Roundabout) is the term for a technology cluster of high-tech companies located in East London, England. Its main area lies broadly between St Luke's and Hackney Road, with an accelerator space for spinout companies at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. A cluster of web businesses initially developed around the Old Street Roundabout in 2008. The area had historically been relatively run down compared to the City of London, and was known as the 'City Fringe'. The 2008–09 recession further suppressed rents through the closure of numerous firms, making it affordable to technology start-ups, while redundancies from financial services companies, such as investment banks, released a local pool of experienced talent interested in entrepreneurship.From 2010, as the cluster developed, both local and national government supported its growth, with the goal of creating a cluster comparable to Silicon Valley in the United States. Cisco, Facebook, Google, Intel, McKinsey & Company and Microsoft are among the companies that have invested in the area. City, University of London, London Metropolitan University, Imperial College London, Queen Mary University of London and University College London are all academic partners in projects based in the cluster.

The St. Luke Workhouse stood on City Road between Wellesley Terrace and Shepherdess Walk in what is today the London Borough of Hackney. Initially, the workhouse was located on the north side of Featherstone Street, Bunhill Fields, it having opened in 1724. Being within part of the City of London parish of St Giles without Cripplegate, it fell under the control of two metropolitan authorities. The lease expired in 1782 and a second Local Act enabled the parish to build the new workhouse at a cost of £2,000.Once built, the site consisted of wards, a workshop and a vestry hall. It then fell within the Borough of Finsbury before boundaries were realigned. St. Luke's became the Holborn and Finsbury Institution and then St. Matthews Hospital, when the site was converted to house sick patients. World War II bomb damage destroyed the southernmost block, which was never fully repaired.The vestry hall was sold to the London and Provincial Assurance Company before being demolished in the 1960s.The hospital was closed in 1986. The workshops straddling Shepherdess Walk were renovated and are now modern apartments whilst the wards straddling Wellesley Terrace appear largely original, them too having been sold and converted to apartments. The remainder of the site - the southern-end - is now a carpark. The original perimeter wall and gates still stand, the initials ‘HJ’ and ‘SM’ still being present in the concrete and brick pillars.

Old Street is a National Rail and London Underground station at the junction of Old Street and City Road in central London, England. The station is on the Bank branch of the Northern line between Moorgate and Angel stations and on the Northern City Line between Moorgate and Essex Road stations. The station is in the London Borough of Islington (straddling the Hackney border). It is in Travelcard Zone 1. The station was built by the City and South London Railway and opened in 1901. It was rebuilt by Stanley Heaps in 1925 with a more uniform frontage, and again in 1968, replacing all surface buildings with a subsurface complex. In 2014, it was redeveloped to provide more retail space. Old Street station has become busier, attracting over 20 million visitors in 2014; a trend expected to continue following redevelopment of the local area as a centre for the British Information Technology industry.

Bunhill Row is a street located in St Luke's, London Borough of Islington, London. The street runs north–south from Old Street to Chiswell Street. On the east side are the cemetery of Bunhill Fields and the open space of the Honourable Artillery Company's Artillery Ground.

The Royal Chest Hospital was a hospital in City Road, London. It operated from 1814 until 1954.
