High Spen

Hookergate School was a secondary school and sixth form located in High Spen in the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead, England. The school was formally merged with Ryton Comprehensive School in 2011, and was renamed Charles Thorp Comprehensive School (now Thorp Academy). The new school operated over both of the former school sites until 2012 when the school relocated completely to the former Ryton school campus. The school campus went up for sale, with offers closing on 18 November 2015, to be sold as a 'development opportunity'.The site upon where the school was located had been then used for filming of BBC Children programs such as Wolfblood and an spinoff of Tracy Beaker, 'The dumping grounds'. However the school campus is now no longer required and has been put for sale for development.

Greenside is a village in the extreme west of the Metropolitan County of Tyne and Wear, England. Once an independent village in County Durham, it became incorporated into Tyne and Wear in 1974 and then the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead in 1986.

Whinfield coke works was a large industrial complex located near Rowlands Gill in Tyne and Wear, North East England. The complex comprised a coking plant, alloy factory and power station. Waste heat from the plant provided heat for a power station. This was later converted to generate electricity by burning coke.

Lintzford is a small village on the border of County Durham and Tyne and Wear, England. Situated on the River Derwent in the countryside near the town of Consett, Lintzford is renowned for its beauty, derived from nearby streams, forests and open fields, and the typical English cottage houses that surround it. Its population was approximately 200 according to the last census. It is located approximately 280 miles north of London and is southwest of Rowlands Gill.

Hamsterley Mill is a village in County Durham, around 3 miles from Burnopfield and approximately the same distance from Consett.

Lintz Green Railway Station was on the Derwent Valley Railway Branch of the North Eastern Railway near Consett, County Durham, England. The railway station opened with the rest of the line on 2 December 1867 and closed to passengers on the 2 November 1953. The line closed completely in 1963 and was dismantled with the station site becoming part of the Derwent Walk Country Park.The station was infamous at the time for the unsolved 1911 murder of its stationmaster.

Ryton Woodside is a small settlement near the town of Ryton, Tyne and Wear. It is near the A659 road. Formerly designated as a township, it was described as a "straggling hamlet', in the 19th century, when its population varied from 885 people in 1801 to 1106 people in 1891. It covered an area of 2813 acres at that time. Ryton Woodside is north east of Greenside and south of Ryton.

Derwentcote Steel Furnace (grid reference NZ131566), Rowlands Gill, near Newcastle upon Tyne, England, built in 1720, is an example of an early cementation furnace which produced high-grade steel. A Grade I listed building, it is part of an industrial and mining site that has been protected as a scheduled monument.It was restored in 1990 by English Heritage.

Chopwell is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England, 3 miles (4.8 km) west of Rowlands Gill and 1 mile (1.6 km) north of Hamsterley. At the 2011 Census, it had a population of 9,395.In 1150, Bishop Pudsey granted the Manor of Chopwell to the first Abbot of Newminster. Newminster Abbey retained possession of the manor until the dissolution of the Monasteries in 1536.Traditionally an area of coal mining, Chopwell was nicknamed "Little Moscow" because of the strong support for the Communist Party. Chopwell counts "Marx Terrace" (after Karl Marx) and "Lenin Terrace" (after Vladimir Lenin) among its street names, and during the 1926 General Strike the Union Flag at the council offices was taken down and replaced with the Soviet flag. Another notable street, site of the former Chopwell Junior School, "Fannybush Lane", was renamed "Whittonstall Road" by the local authority in the 1990s after its street sign was repeatedly stolen. In 1974, Chopwell became part of the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear and the metropolitan borough of Gateshead, after previously being part of the administrative county of Durham.

Crawcrook is a semi-rural village close to the western border of the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear in England. Traditionally an independent village in County Durham, it was incorporated into the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead on 1 April 1974. The population taken at the 2011 Census of the Gateshead ward (Crawcrook and Greenside) had increased to 8,841.

Hamsterley Hall is an 18th-century English country house at Hamsterley, Rowlands Gill, County Durham, England. It is a Grade II* listed building. The estate at Hamsterley was given, in 1762, by Sir John Swinburne Bt to his younger brother Henry Swinburne. In 1769, Henry carried out substantial alterations to the then existing house to create the present two-story, four-bayed castellated Gothic Revival-style mansion. Swinburne died in 1803 and in 1806 the property was sold to Anthony Surtees. His son Robert Smith Surtees, a novelist, acquired the estate in 1838. He was High Sheriff of Durham in 1856. He died in 1864, leaving his estate to his daughter Eleanor, who married John Gage Prendergast Vereker, 5th Viscount Gort in 1885. Their first son John Vereker, 6th Viscount Gort VC was succeeded in 1946 by his brother Standish Vereker, 7th Viscount MC who lived at Hamsterley until his death in 1975.

Rowlands Gill is a town situated along the A694, between Winlaton Mill and Hamsterley Mill, on the north bank of the River Derwent, in the Metropolitan Borough of Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, England. Within Gateshead's greenbelt, the town has a picturesque setting with much open space and views across the valley to Gibside Estate, now owned by the National Trust.
