Columbus City Township, Louisa County, Iowa

Columbus City is a city in western Louisa County, Iowa, United States. The population was 392 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Muscatine Micropolitan Statistical Area.

The Columbus Community School District is a rural public school district headquartered in Columbus Junction, Iowa. It is mostly within Louisa County, with a smaller area in Muscatine County, and serves the towns of Columbus Junction, Columbus City, Conesville, Cotter, Fredonia, and the surrounding rural areas. Jeff Maeder became superintendent in 2020, after the school board agreed to a shared position with the Winfield-Mt. Union Community School District, where Maeder has served as superintendent since 2015. Previously, Maeder was the 7-12 principal at Columbus Community for seven years.

Columbus Junction is a city in Louisa County, Iowa. The population was 1,830 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Muscatine Micropolitan Statistical Area. Columbus Junction is home of the historic Swinging Bridge, found one block south of Highway 92 near downtown. The 262-foot-long steel cable and wood suspension bridge was built in 1922 as an elevated walkway connecting Third and Fourth streets. The Columbus Community School District (which serves Columbus Junction, Columbus City, Fredonia, Cotter, Conesville, and other surrounding townships) is based in Columbus Junction. The school's colors are blue and white and their mascot is a wildcat. The city's largest employer is a Tyson Foods meat processing plant located just north of the city on Highway 70.

The Community Building, also known as Columbus Junction School 1882-1920, is a historic building located in Columbus Junction, Iowa, United States. It houses the Columbus Community Heritage Museum, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The building was constructed as a school and served the function from 1882 to 1920. After being renovated by the Works Progress Administration it served as a gathering place for various community functions. The building was damaged in a fire in the 1960s and the first floor was restored to serve as a library and meeting room. Subsequently, the building has been renovated into a community history museum. The two-story brick structure is basically a large block with a wing on the south side. The entire structure is capped with a hip roof. The Vernacular style building features a prominent belfry, which is a reconstruction. The building's brick exterior appears to be a better quality than what was generally manufactured in Columbus Junction so it is assumed it was imported from elsewhere.

Short Creek is a stream in Louisa and Washington counties, Iowa, in the United States. It is a tributary of the Iowa River. Short Creek was so named from the fact it is shorter than nearby Long Creek.

Gipple's Quarry Bridge is a historic structure located in a rural area southwest of Columbus Junction, Iowa, United States. The Louisa County Board of Supervisors approved the petition of T.J. Gipple in April 1893 to replace a timber pile bridge over Buffington Creek, which was near his stone quarry. They awarded a $1,174 contract to the Gillette-Herzog Manufacturing Company of Minneapolis to build two bridges. The second span was the County Line Bridge over Long Creek in Columbus Township. The bridge span is supported by stone masonry abutments and piers. The steel components of the bridge were rolled by Carnegie, Gillette-Herzog in Pittsburgh. The pony truss bridge is typical of those built in the same era in Iowa, however, like County Line Bridge it has an unusual lower chord configuration with end panels that slope downward from the bearing shoes to the center panels. It has subsequently been abandoned. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998.

The Cedar River is a 338-mile-long (544 km) river in Minnesota and Iowa. It is a tributary of the Iowa River, which flows to the Mississippi River. The Cedar River takes its name from the red cedar (Juniperus virginiana) trees growing there, and was originally called the Red Cedar River by the Meskwaki. The first Mississippi steamboat reached Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1844, and during the next decade, the Red Cedar (as it was still called) was an important commercial waterway. The surrounding region is known officially as the Cedar River Valley, though it is more commonly referred to simply as the Cedar Valley. The stream is young geologically, and only in places where the glacial material has been removed is the underlying bedrock exposed.

County Line Bridge is a historic structure located in a rural area west of Columbus Junction, Iowa, United States. The Louisa County Board of Supervisors approved the petition of Thomas Anwyl in April 1893 to build a bridge over Long Creek on the Louisa-Washington county line. They awarded a $1,174 contract to the Gillette-Herzog Manufacturing Company of Minneapolis to build two bridges. The second span was the Gipple's Quarry Bridge over Buffington Creek in Elm Grove Township. The bridge span is supported by cast iron columns that were manufactured by the Cast Iron Pile and Bridge Company of Keosauqua, Iowa. The steel components were rolled by Carnegie for Gillette-Herzog in Pittsburgh. Port Allen is an unincorporated community in Iowa, United States, located along the Louisa-Muscatine County line on Iowa Highway 70. It was formerly a thriving town, but today is merely a housing sub-division. Port Allen was platted in 1871 by Cyril Carpenter.
