Govan ( GUV-ən; Cumbric?: Gwovan?; Scots: Gouan; Scottish Gaelic: Baile a' Ghobhainn) is a district, parish, and former burgh now part of south-west City of Glasgow, Scotland. It is situated 2.5 miles (4.0 km) west of Glasgow city centre, on the south bank of the River Clyde, opposite the mouth of the River Kelvin and the district of Partick. Historically it was part of the County of Lanark. In the early medieval period, the site of the present Govan Old churchyard was established as a Christian centre for the Brittonic Kingdom of Alt Clut (Dumbarton Rock) and its successor realm, the Kingdom of Strathclyde. This latter kingdom, established in the aftermath of the Viking siege and capture of Alt Clut by Vikings from Dublin in AD 870, created the sandstone sculptures known today as the Govan Stones. Govan was the site of a ford and later a ferry which linked the area with Partick for seasonal cattle drovers. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, textile mills and coal mining were important; in the early-nineteenth century, shipbuilding emerged as Govan's principal industry. In 1864, Govan gained burgh status, and was the fifth-largest burgh in Scotland. It was incorporated into the City of Glasgow in 1912.

Govan Municipal Buildings is a former local authority building on Orkney Street in Govan, Scotland. The building, which was the meeting place of the local burgh council in the 19th century, is a Category B listed building.

Broomloan Road Primary School was a primary school situated in Govan, Glasgow, Scotland. It was the largest School in Govan built by Govan School Board, and comprised two separate buildings. The first, designed by Alexander Watt, opened in 1875. In 1894 a red sandstone extension was built, designed by H&D Barclay. Broomloan Road Primary School closed in the late 1960s. After closure the red sandstone building was used by St. Saviour's Infants throughout the 1970s and as St. Gerards annexe after St. Saviour's Infants moved to a new school in Dunsmuir Street. In the early 1980s the building became the Summertown Community Centre before closing in the early 1990s. The older yellow sandstone building became Broomloan Road Nursery School in the late 1970s and was closed in the early 1990s after the nursery moved to St. Gerards Secondary School.Both buildings were closed in the mid-2000s, boarded up and left in a derelict condition for many years. They were protected as a category B listed building.The yellow sandstone building designed by Alexander Watt was almost completely destroyed by a fire in May 2014. The 1894 building went on fire later in 2014. Both buildings have been subsequently demolished entirely. It is most notable for being the first school of Sir Alex Ferguson, the former manager of Manchester United Football Club. He attended Broomloan Road and later Govan High School.

Glenlee is a steel-hulled three-masted barque, built as a cargo ship at Port Glasgow under that name in 1896 for Glasgow owners. With later owners she was named Islamount and Clarastella. From 1922 she was the sail training ship Galatea in the Spanish Navy. Since 1993, carrying her original name, Glenlee has been a museum ship at the Riverside Museum on Pointhouse Quay, Glasgow, known as The Tall Ship at Glasgow Harbour.

Govan railway station was a railway station in Govan, a district of Glasgow, Scotland. The station was originally part of an extension to the Glasgow and Paisley Joint Railway.

Govan subway station is a station serving the area of Govan in Glasgow, Scotland. It is located on the south side of the River Clyde. Just to the south of the station is the main depot and test track for the Glasgow Subway. The station is located near the historic Govan Old Parish Church. This station forms an interchange station, being adjacent to Govan bus station. This combined with the fact that the subway to Partick forms the only rail link across the Clyde west of the city centre means that it is one of the busier stations. Annual passenger boardings have fallen below one million in recent years and were recorded at 990,000 in 2004/05.The station has two platforms. Prior to closure for modernisation in 1977 the station was called Govan Cross. The appearance of cracks in the roof of the old station led to the premature closure of the unmodernised railway in 1977. As part of the resulting modernisation programme, the station's surface buildings were replaced and its single island platform changed to a dual side platform arrangement. Govan (under its former name of Govan Cross) is one of the stations mentioned in Cliff Hanley's song The Glasgow Underground.Govan includes a lift and escalator. Along with St Enoch subway station, it is one of two Glasgow Subway stations that is wheelchair accessible.On 29 June 2011, a man died after being hit by one of the service's rolling stock at 09:12.

The Govan-Partick Bridge is a new bridge under construction in Glasgow, Scotland, across the River Clyde, close to the Riverside Museum.The 110-metre bridge will carry pedestrians and bicycles between Govan south of the river and Partick to the north. The V-shaped pylon design is inspired by the historic cranes at the riverside. It will be one of the largest opening footbridges in Europe.The work is intended to improve the economic conditions in Govan (which is a deprived area of the city) and is linked to the Glasgow University and Glasgow City Council-led 'West End Innovation Quarter'. The bridge will land at Water Row in Govan where a mixed use development of housing and commercial space is planned.

The Riverside Museum (formerly known as the Glasgow Museum of Transport) is a museum in Glasgow, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, housed in a building at Pointhouse Quay in the Glasgow Harbour regeneration district of Glasgow, Scotland. The building opened in June 2011, winning the 2013 European Museum of the Year Award. It houses many exhibits of national and international importance. The Govan-Partick Bridge will provide a pedestrian link from the museum across the Clyde to Govan. It is set to be completed in 2023.

New Govan Parish Church, presently named Govan & Linthouse Parish Church, is a 19th-century church building located in the Govan area of Glasgow, Scotland. It is one of three church buildings of the Parish of Govan & Linthouse, however, it is considered as the main Parish church.

The River Kelvin (Scottish Gaelic: Abhainn Cheilbhinn) is a tributary of the River Clyde in northern and northeastern Glasgow, Scotland. It rises on the moor south east of the village of Banton, east of Kilsyth. At almost 22 miles (35 km) long, it initially flows south to Dullatur Bog where it falls into a man made trench and takes a ninety degree turn flowing west through Strathkelvin and along the northern boundary of the bog parallel with the Forth and Clyde Canal. The University of Glasgow is situated by the river, in Gilmorehill. In 1892, the title of Baron Kelvin was created for physicist and engineer William Thomson, a professor at the university. The name "kelvin" for the unit of temperature, chosen in honour of Lord Kelvin, thus traces its origins to the river.

Ibrox subway station is a station serving the Ibrox area of Glasgow, Scotland. The station was known as Copland Road until 1977. The station's surface buildings were replaced during the Subway's modernisation programme, with the main entrance still located on Copland Road. The station now has a side platform arrangement for boarding the trains. Particularly of note nearby is Ibrox Stadium, home of Rangers F.C. The station is extremely busy on matchdays, with an additional entrance on Woodville Street opening to accommodate the vastly increased volume of passenger traffic. However, the station is generally quiet at other times and records around 540,000 boardings per year.Also nearby is Glasgow Science Centre, although SPT suggest that Cessnock station is the alighting point for the Science Centre, as it is closer.

The 1971 Ibrox disaster was a crush among the crowd at an Old Firm football game (Rangers v Celtic), which led to 66 deaths and more than 200 injuries. It happened on 2 January 1971 in an exit stairway at Ibrox Park (now Ibrox Stadium) in Glasgow, Scotland. It was the worst British football disaster until the Bradford City stadium fire in Bradford, England, in 1985. This was followed by 97 deaths in the Hillsborough disaster in Sheffield, England, in 1989. The stadium's owner, Rangers F.C., was later ruled to be at fault in a sheriff's judgement on one of the deaths. Rangers did not dispute this ruling, and was sued for damages in 60 other cases brought by relatives of the dead.
