The neighbourhood of Pleasantville in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador is located in the east end of the city, directly north of the downtown. The neighbourhood extends from the north side of Quidi Vidi Lake northward to Newfoundland Drive, and is largely made up of apartment blocks. A cricket field near Quidi Vidi Lake in Pleasantville served as a military training camp for the Blue Puttees of the Newfoundland Regiment during the month of September 1914, before troops left St. John's on the SS Florizel. In addition, the men practiced skirmishes in an area just east of Quidi Vidi, known as White Hills.Pleasantville is home to a reserve base of the Canadian Forces and the Country Ribbon meat processing plant, as well as the former site of the Janeway Children's Hospital, now demolished. It includes Bally Haly Country Club. Most of the area was developed by the United States Military in 1941 and is the former site of Fort Pepperrell, later Pepperrell Air Force Base. The base closed in 1960, and in 1961 the land was transferred to the Canadian Government for use by the Department of National Defence. Many of the buildings the US Military constructed in the area have since been either demolished or turned into government offices or residential units. The former American junior and senior high school building, initially opened for the 1956-57 school year, has been converted into condominiums. Pleasantville is now being redeveloped by Canada Lands Company (CLC) into a residential neighbourhood.

Mallard Cottage is a heritage-designated building located within Quidi Vidi Village in the City of St.John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. The cottage is a one-and-a-half-stories with a hipped roof and central chimney. The architecture is an example of early 19th century vernacular style patterned on Irish thatched-roofed cottages. Though the exact date of construction cannot be confirmed, based on evidence from construction techniques, architectural style, and oral history the date for its construction are placed between 1820 and 1840, making it one of the oldest residential structures in St. John's. Two other buildings in St.John's of the same style are Anderson House, built 1804–1805, and Martin McNamara House, exact construction date unknown. These three structures are the best preserved examples of late 18th and early 19th century architecture in St.John's.

Quidi Vidi is a neighbourhood in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Its pronunciations vary, even amongst longtime residents, but "Kiddy Vidi" is the most common. One theory behind the name is that it was named after a beloved cat named Vidi. The village is adjacent to Quidi Vidi Lake (where the Royal St. John's Regatta is held the first Wednesday in August, weather permitting). Quidi Vidi's harbour is known as "The Gut". Located in Quidi Vidi is the Quidi Vidi Battery Provincial Historic Site. The village is home to several small businesses.

Quidi Vidi Brewing Company is a craft brewery in Quidi Vidi village, a neighbourhood of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Founded in 1996 by David Fong in a former fish plant, the brewery is an important tourist destination. Currently, over 25 different brews are offered year round; including the famous blue bottled Iceberg Beer, which is made with 20,000 year old iceberg water which is harvested from icebergs off the coast of Newfoundland.Quidi Vidi Brewery is the third-largest brewer in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, after Labatt and Molson. Its products are available province-wide in liquor stores, corner stores and on draft. Quidi Vidi Brewery’s beer can also be found in other provinces across Canada like Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.

Quidi Vidi Lake is a 1,600 m (1 mi) long body of water located at the east end of the city of St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. Local people commonly pronounce its name as kiddy viddy. Water flows into the lake from the Rennies and Virginia Rivers, along with smaller streams, and then into the sea through Quidi Vidi harbour. The lake has a long history of hosting sporting events, including the annual Royal St. John's Regatta, said to be the oldest continuous sporting event still held in North America. The former Pepperrell Air Force Base was located on the north shore of the lake and a military presence continues in the form of Canadian Forces Station St. John's (CFS St. John's)). The South shore of the Lake has a number of residential and apartment complexes. A number of cultural events are held at Lakeside.Quidi Vidi Lake has a 3.8-kilometre (2.4 mi) leg of St. John's Grand Concourse walking trail surrounding it. On the north end of the walking trail is a fenced-in outdoor dog park and a skate board park.

Pepperrell Air Force Base, previously known as Fort Pepperrell, is a decommissioned United States military base located in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada which operated from 1941 to 1961.The base was named in honour of Sir William Pepperrell (1696–1759) of Kittery, Maine, commander of a force of 4,200 soldiers and sailors aboard 90 ships, who captured the French seaport at Louisbourg after a 46-day siege on June 16, 1745.

The Harbor Defenses of Argentia and St. John's was a United States Army Coast Artillery Corps harbor defense command in World War II. It was part of Newfoundland Base Command, established as a result of the 1940 Destroyers for Bases Agreement with the United Kingdom. It coordinated the US Army coast defenses of Naval Station Argentia and the port of St. John's, Newfoundland from January 1941 to 8 September 1945. These included coast artillery at Fort McAndrew in Argentia and Fort Pepperrell in St. John's.

Signal Hill is a hill which overlooks the harbour and city of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The majority of Signal Hill, including Cabot Tower, is designated a National Historic Site. The highest point, Ladies' Lookout, is 167 m (548 ft) high. Due to its strategic placement overlooking the Narrows, the only entrance to the harbour, fortifications date back to the mid 17th century. On 12 December 1901, the first transatlantic wireless transmission was received there by Guglielmo Marconi. Adjacent to the National Historic site is the Johnson Geo Centre and Johnson Geo Vista Park. The community of The Battery lies on the slope of the hill overlooking the harbour, and Memorial University of Newfoundland has a campus on the lower slopes, in the former Battery Hotel.

Virginia Park is a neighbourhood in the northeast end of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. The neighbourhood is a mix of non-profit provincial housing developments and private detached homes. It is located north of Pleasantville, and consists of the area north of Newfoundland Drive and east of Logy Bay Road. The neighbourhood is represented by the Virginia Waters and Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi districts in the provincial House of Assembly, and is part of the St. John's East district in the House of Commons of Canada. Virginia Park residents are served by East Point Elementary. Royal Newfoundland Constabulary maintains the East District police station at Virginia Plaza on Newfoundland Drive. Also, the Virginia Park Community Centre serves the community's youth with a variety of recreational activities.

Garrison St. John's, formerly known as and commonly referred to as CFS St. John's, is a Canadian Forces Garrison in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Garrison St. John's is on the north shore of Quidi Vidi Lake on part of the former site of Pepperrell Air Force Base, as well as a small adjunct area on St. John's Harbour. The garrison supports all military activities in Newfoundland as well as local reserve units; CFS St. John's has 15 lodger units and supports 450 full-time military and civilian personnel. It also indirectly supports 1,500 reservists in Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as 5,000 cadets. In its primary role, Garrison St. John's supports naval vessels of Maritime Forces Atlantic which patrol waters off Newfoundland and Labrador. The station also supports as many as 30 visiting NATO naval vessels each year. It also provided direct support to HMCS Avalon, a sea cadet facility, as well as the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, 37 Combat Engineer Regiment, 37 Service Battalion, Air Reserve Flight Torbay and the Naval Reserve Division HMCS Cabot. On 21 June 2014, the new Surgeon Lieutenant-Commander W. Anthony Paddon Building was opened, which houses those personnel attached to the station, replacing 17 older buildings. The new building is in the Pleasantville area. The initial land purchase took place in 2007, when the Department of National Defence bought 2.6 hectares (6.4 acres) of land. Initially the cost of the new building was forecast as $101 million; however, after seven years, the actual cost came out to $156 million. The building is named for William Anthony Paddon, a former lieutenant governor of Newfoundland.

Signal Hill-Quidi Vidi is a former provincial electoral district for the House of Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. As of 2011 there were 8,137 eligible voters living within the district.The district included the east end of the downtown St. John's, and ran north to Newfoundland Drive. The residential mix ranged from apartments and refurbished townhouses in the older part of the city to the edges of suburban subdivisions in the east end. The last MHA was New Democratic Party MHA, Lorraine Michael. This district was also represented by former Newfoundland and Labrador NDP leader, Jack Harris from 1990 to 2006. The district was abolished in 2015, and became St. John's East-Quidi Vidi.

Cabot Tower is a tower in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, situated on Signal Hill. Construction of the tower began in 1898 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of John Cabot's landing in Newfoundland, and Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. In 1901, Guglielmo Marconi received the first trans-Atlantic wireless message at a position near the tower, the letter "S" in Morse Code sent from Poldhu, Cornwall, United Kingdom. Cabot Tower is now the centre of the Signal Hill National Historic Site of Canada, with walking trails and an interpretation centre.
