South Plainfield is a borough in Middlesex County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. It is located in the heart of the Raritan Valley region. As of the 2020 United States census, the borough's population was 24,338, an increase of 953 (+4.1%) from the 2010 census count of 23,385, which in turn reflected an increase of 1,575 (+7.2%) from the 21,810 counted in the 2000 census.South Plainfield was incorporated by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 12, 1926, from portions of Piscataway Township, based on the results of a referendum passed on April 6, 1926. The borough's name derives from Plainfield, which derived its name from a local estate or from its scenic location.

District Factor Groups organize districts statewide to allow comparison by common socioeconomic characteristics of the local districts. South Plainfield High School (or SPHS) is a four-year, co-ed comprehensive community public high school located in South Plainfield in Middlesex County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey, serving students in ninth through twelfth grades and operating as the sole secondary school in the South Plainfield Public Schools. The school offers numerous clubs, activities, and athletics. As of the 2021–22 school year, the school had an enrollment of 1,079 students and 88.4 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 12.2:1. There were 175 students (16.2% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 47 (4.4% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.

The Plainfield Curling Club (or PCC) is a nonprofit curling club located in South Plainfield, New Jersey. It owns and operates the only dedicated curling facility in New Jersey. It was founded in 1963, with the members initially using rented ice and curling outdoors. The current two-sheet structure was completed in 1967. The PCC season runs from late October through early April. As of the 2018–2019 season, the club holds league play seven days per week, hosts six annual bonspiels, and has programs for juniors (teenagers) and “little rockers” (ages 6–12). It also hosts supervised programs for members of the public to try curling. The club had a significant increase in membership for the 2002–2003 season, after U.S. television coverage of curling in the 2002 Winter Olympics increased awareness of the sport. There was a similar spike in membership for the 2006–2007 season due to the 2006 Winter Olympics television coverage. Interest in the sport at the club again peaked after the 2010 Winter Olympics.Plainfield Curling Club is part of the Grand National Curling Club and part of the United States Curling Association.

Laing House of Plainfield Plantation is a historic house in Edison, Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States, built in the early 18th century when the region was being settled by Scottish Quakers in the late 17th and early 18th century, as recalled in the name of The Plainfields and Scotch Plains. The region was part of the colonial era Elizabethtown Tract and later part of Piscataway Township. It is not certain whether the name derives from the plain clothing worn by the founders or is a reference to the landscape. The house was added to the New Jersey Register of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

Cedar Brook Park is a 78-acre (32 ha) county park in the city of Plainfield in Union County, New Jersey. Featuring the Shakespeare Garden, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 25, 2007, for its significance in landscape architecture. The park was designed by the Olmsted Brothers of Brookline, Massachusetts from 1924 to 1930. A small portion of the park extends into the borough of South Plainfield in Middlesex County.

In 2020, PTC announced the FDA approval of Evrysdi™ (risdiplam) for the treatment of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) in adults and children 2 months and older, in partnership with the SMA Foundation and Roche. PTC acquired the Bio-e platform in 2019. The Bio-e platform utilizes expertise in electron-transfer chemistry to modulate key biological processes beyond the reach of current drug development approaches. The lead compounds from the Bio-e platform, PTC743 and PTC857, target the enzyme 15-lipoxygenase – a key enzymatic hub that regulates the inflammation and oxidative stress that underpin mitochondrial disease and CNS pathology. Laura Davies won the first of her four major titles in an 18-hole Tuesday playoff over runners-up Ayako Okamoto and Joanne Carner. The final round concluded on Monday after rain delays. It was Davies' first victory in the United States, and she became the fourth international winner of the championship.Following this year, the Women's Open was not played in the New York City area for over a quarter century, returning in 2013 at Sebonack on eastern Long Island. In that time, the winner's share of the purse grew over tenfold, from $55,000 to $585,000.

The George A. Strong House is a historic building located at 1030 Central Avenue in the city of Plainfield in Union County, New Jersey. Built in 1896, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 28, 2012, for its significance in architecture, education, and community planning and development. The duCret School of Art purchased the building in 1977 to use for art education.

Plainfield Country Club is a private country club and golf course located in Edison in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. It was founded in 1890 as the Hillside Tennis Club. Its golf course was designed in 1916 by golf course designer Donald Ross, and opened BC for play in 1921.

The Benjamin Shotwell House, or the Shotwell-Runyon House, is a historic house in Edison, Middlesex County, New Jersey. The house was listed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places and National Register of Historic Places in 1987. The farm on which is located in part of Route 287. The Shotwells were early settlers of "The Plains", an early reference to Plainfield, New Jersey.
