The South Plainfield Public Schools is a comprehensive community public school district, for South Plainfield, in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States, that serves students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade.As of the 2020–21 school year, the district, comprised of seven schools, had an enrollment of 3,400 students and 304.0 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 11.2:1.The district is classified by the New Jersey Department of Education as being in District Factor Group "FG", the fourth-highest of eight groupings. District Factor Groups organize districts statewide to allow comparison by common socioeconomic characteristics of the local districts. South Plainfield High School (or SPHS) is a four-year, co-ed comprehensive community public high school located in South Plainfield in Middlesex County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey, serving students in ninth through twelfth grades and operating as the sole secondary school in the South Plainfield Public Schools. The school offers numerous clubs, activities, and athletics. As of the 2021–22 school year, the school had an enrollment of 1,079 students and 88.4 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 12.2:1. There were 175 students (16.2% of enrollment) eligible for free lunch and 47 (4.4% of students) eligible for reduced-cost lunch.

The Plainfield Curling Club (or PCC) is a nonprofit curling club located in South Plainfield, New Jersey. It owns and operates the only dedicated curling facility in New Jersey. It was founded in 1963, with the members initially using rented ice and curling outdoors. The current two-sheet structure was completed in 1967. The PCC season runs from late October through early April. As of the 2018–2019 season, the club holds league play seven days per week, hosts six annual bonspiels, and has programs for juniors (teenagers) and “little rockers” (ages 6–12). It also hosts supervised programs for members of the public to try curling. The club had a significant increase in membership for the 2002–2003 season, after U.S. television coverage of curling in the 2002 Winter Olympics increased awareness of the sport. There was a similar spike in membership for the 2006–2007 season due to the 2006 Winter Olympics television coverage. Interest in the sport at the club again peaked after the 2010 Winter Olympics.Plainfield Curling Club is part of the Grand National Curling Club and part of the United States Curling Association.

PTC Therapeutics is a US pharmaceutical company focused on the development of orally administered small molecule drugs and gene therapy which regulate gene expression by targeting post-transcriptional control (PTC) mechanisms in orphan diseases.In September 2009, PTC entered into an agreement with Roche for the development of orally bioavailable small molecules for central nervous system diseases. In 2020, PTC announced the FDA approval of Evrysdi™ (risdiplam) for the treatment of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) in adults and children 2 months and older, in partnership with the SMA Foundation and Roche. PTC acquired the Bio-e platform in 2019. The Bio-e platform utilizes expertise in electron-transfer chemistry to modulate key biological processes beyond the reach of current drug development approaches. The lead compounds from the Bio-e platform, PTC743 and PTC857, target the enzyme 15-lipoxygenase – a key enzymatic hub that regulates the inflammation and oxidative stress that underpin mitochondrial disease and CNS pathology. Two pivotal studies will investigate the safety and efficacy of PTC743: a Phase 2/3 trial in refractory mitochondrial epilepsy and a Phase 3 trial in Friedreich’s ataxia.

Laing House of Plainfield Plantation is a historic house in Edison, Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States, built in the early 18th century when the region was being settled by Scottish Quakers in the late 17th and early 18th century, as recalled in the name of The Plainfields and Scotch Plains. The region was part of the colonial era Elizabethtown Tract and later part of Piscataway Township. It is not certain whether the name derives from the plain clothing worn by the founders or is a reference to the landscape. The house was added to the New Jersey Register of Historic Places and the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

Cedar Brook Park is a 78-acre (32 ha) county park in the city of Plainfield in Union County, New Jersey. Featuring the Shakespeare Garden, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on June 25, 2007, for its significance in landscape architecture. The park was designed by the Olmsted Brothers of Brookline, Massachusetts from 1924 to 1930. A small portion of the park extends into the borough of South Plainfield in Middlesex County.

The Benjamin Shotwell House, or the Shotwell-Runyon House, is a historic house in Edison, Middlesex County, New Jersey. The house was listed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places and National Register of Historic Places in 1987. The farm on which is located in part of Route 287. The Shotwells were early settlers of "The Plains", an early reference to Plainfield, New Jersey.

Al-Minhaal Academy is an Islamic school located in South Plainfield, New Jersey serving students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. Al-Minhaal Academy also has a full-time masjid. The George A. Strong House is a historic building located at 1030 Central Avenue in the city of Plainfield in Union County, New Jersey. Built in 1896, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 28, 2012, for its significance in architecture, education, and community planning and development. The duCret School of Art purchased the building in 1977 to use for art education.

New Durham was an unincorporated community and now a neighborhood located within Edison in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States, south of Dismal Swamp. Along with Piscatawaytown, Bonhamtown, New Dover and Stelton, New Durham is one of the older historical crossroad communities established in Edison (either as once part of Piscataway or Woodbridge before the establishment of Raritan Township, as Edison was earlier known). It was described in 1834 as having a tavern, a store, and a half-dozen dwellings.
