Lea, Herefordshire

Mitcheldean Road railway station was a railway station that served the town of Mitcheldean 1.5 miles (2.4 km) to the south and the village of Lea in Herefordshire. Opened in 1855 with the line it was located on the Great Western Railway line linking Ross-on-Wye and Gloucester. In 1871 the Mitcheldean Road & Forest of Dean Junction Railway was formed to extend the line from Whimsey northwards to link up with the Hereford, Ross and Gloucester Railway at Mitcheldean Road, the line was taken over by the GWR in 1878 and completed, but never fully opened. Nothing remains of the station and the site has been built over. The residential cul-de-sac which occupies the site is named Noden Drive after Reginald 'Dick' Noden who served as Station Master from the mid-1940s until the station's closure in 1964.

Wigpool Ironstone Mine (grid reference SO654197) is a 34.88-hectare (86.2-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Gloucestershire, notified in 1998.

Wigpool (grid reference SO652196) is a 7.5-hectare (19-acre) nature reserve in Gloucestershire in the Forest of Dean, England.The site is managed jointly by the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust and the Forestry Commission by agreement with the Forestry Commission. Originally the Trust held two separate nature reserves under lease from the commission. The revised agreement for a single reserve, called Wigpool, operates from 2009, but involvement with the two separate areas goes back to 1967/68. There was a formal agreement for Pit House Pond and Bog in 1978. The site (both original parts) is listed in the 'Forest of Dean Local Plan Review' as a Key Wildlife Site (KWS).

Burton Court is a grade II listed, large country house near Linton, Penyard, Herefordshire, England.The house is of brick-faced stone, with five bays. Three bays have lunette windows and a steep pediment. Within the pediment is a diocletian window.It was built in the 18th century and was owned by the Huntley Family of Boxwell Court, Gloucestershire until 2010.

Bailey Level is a former gold mine and iron mine in the Forest of Dean, England. The mine and surface features are currently managed by volunteer members of Lea Bailey Light Railway Society. The gold mine was started by the Chastan Syndicate in 1906. Shares were offered at £1 each (equivalent to £114 in 2021). Some 75,000 shares were sold. (equivalent to £8,582,466 in 2021) However, test workings at Lea Bailey and nearby Staple Edge concluded that the small amount of gold present could not be extracted economically and the syndicate was wound up in 1908.The mine was later extended and some 3,000 long tons (3,048 t; 3,360 short tons) of iron ore were extracted — a small amount compared to the 150,000 long tons (152,407 t; 168,000 short tons) extracted from the nearby Wigpool Ironstone Mine.

Ariconium was a road station of Roman Britain mentioned in Iter XIII of the Iter Britanniarum of the Antonine Itineraries. It was located at Bury Hill in the parish of Weston under Penyard, about 3 miles (5 km) east of Ross on Wye, Herefordshire, and about 15 miles (24 km) southeast of Hereford. The site existed prior to the Roman era, and then came under Roman control. It was abandoned, perhaps shortly after 360, but precisely when and under what circumstances is unknown. Discovered as a result of efforts to map the stations of the Antonine Itineraries, research and excavation have provided the only information on its history, to date showing it to have been a place of bloom furnaces, forges, and iron working throughout its existence.

Scully Grove Quarry (grid reference SO657186) is a 0.4-hectare (0.99-acre) geological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Gloucestershire, England, notified in 1974.The site is listed in the Forest of Dean Local Plan Review as a Key Wildlife Site (KWS).

The Lea Bailey Light Railway is a 2 ft (610 mm) narrow-gauge heritage railway in the United Kingdom. It is built on the site of the Bailey Level Gold Mine An attempt was made in 2003 by the owners of Clearwell Caves to open the mine as a tourist attraction, but this was ultimately unsuccessful. In 2012, a small group from the Royal Forest of Dean Caving Club discovered the mine and a quantity of disused railway equipment and proposed to the owners that a volunteer-led project could start work on restoring the site. As of 2014, two locomotives and a number of wagons have been moved to Lea Bailey from storage at Clearwell Caves or the nearby Hawthorn Tunnel.Part of the railway is laid on the trackbed of the disused Mitcheldean Road & Forest of Dean Junction Railway. In 2013 the Lea Bailey Light Railway Society was formed; its members act as volunteers, undertaking all aspects of work on the site. A regular free newsletter is produced and sent out by e-mail.

Stenders Quarry (grid reference SO659183) is a 2.8-hectare (6.9-acre) biological and geological Site of Special Scientific Interest in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England, notified in 1966 and renotified in 1990. The site is designated as an SSSI for its important geological features, although there is also a diversity of plants and animals recorded.The site is listed in the 'Forest of Dean Local Plan Review' as a Key Wildlife Site (KWS).Stenders Quarry is situated west of Mitcheldean and is on the south side of the Drybrook road. The site was known formerly as the Wilderness Cement Work Quarry. The Quarry, which was gradually extended during the second half of the nineteenth century, provided material for the cement works. Scully Grove Quarry SSSI which is situated to the north also provided material for the cement works.. The remains of an overhead tramway, which was built to carry the limestone across the road, can be seen on the eastern side of Stenders Quarry. Working stopped in 1918 and the Quarry became derelict. The site is regularly used by geological students.The site is owned and managed by the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust. It was purchased in 1974.
