The Free State of Lippe (German: Freistaat Lippe) was created following the abdication of Prince Leopold IV of the Principality of Lippe on 15 November 1918, following the German Revolution. It was a state in Germany during the Weimar Republic and Nazi Germany. After the end of the Second World War, the Control Commission for Germany – British Element (CCG/BE) abolished the state of Lippe in January 1947 and incorporated it into the new German state of North Rhine-Westphalia that had been created three months earlier.

The County of Lippe (German: Grafschaft Lippe) or Lippe-Detmold was an Imperial Estate of the Holy Roman Empire. It had its origins in a small lordship on the Lippe river, first attested in 1123, and lands leased from the Bishopric of Paderborn from 1173. In the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries, the lords of Lippe founded several cities (Lippstadt, Lemgo, Horn, Blomberg, and Detmold), the earliest city-foundations in Westphalia. The territory achieved Imperial immediacy in 1413 at the latest and was part of the Lower Rhenish–Westphalian Circle from 1512. In 1528 or 1529, it was promoted to the status of Imperial County and became part of the College of Lower Rhenish-Westphalian Imperial Counts in the Imperial Diet. Lippe was a centre of conflict during the Reformation as Count Simon V attempted to prevent Protestantism from spreading within his territory by force. Lutheranism was adopted in 1538, two years after his death. Simon VI converted to Calvinism in 1605, leading to a prolonged conflict with Lemgo, which eventually remained Lutheran. On his death in 1613, Simon VI left substantial lands and rights to his younger sons, who formed junior lines: Lippe-Brake and Lippe-Alverissen (which inherited Schaumburg-Lippe in 1644), while the main line became known as Lippe-Detmold. The Counts' efforts to centralise the state and expand its military and bureaucracy in the eighteenth century were stymied by the power of the junior lines and the nobility. In 1789 it became the Principality of Lippe.

Landestheater Detmold is a theatre for operas, operettas, musicals, ballets, and stage plays in Detmold, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It began as the Hochfürstliches Lippisches Hoftheater, founded in 1825 by the court of Lippe. The company has five venues in Detmold. With its guest appearances in more than a hundred locations in Germany and neighboring countries, the theatre company states that it is the largest touring company in Europe.

The Princess Pauline Foundation (Fürstin-Pauline-Stiftung) is an independent Lutheran foundation in Detmold, wholly devoted to charitable purposes and to childcare, youth work and care of the elderly. Previously known as the Paulinenanstalt, it is named after its founder Princess Pauline of Anhalt-Bernburg.

Detmold (German pronunciation: [ˈdɛtmɔlt] ) is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, with a population of 73,969. It was the capital of the small Principality of Lippe from 1468 until 1918 and then of the Free State of Lippe until 1947. Today it is the administrative center of the district of Lippe and of the Regierungsbezirk Detmold. The Church of Lippe has its central administration located in Detmold. The Reformed Redeemer Church is the preaching venue of the state superintendent of the Lippe church.

Detmolder Sommertheater is a theatre in Detmold, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It opened on 26 July 1896.

Ostwestfalen-Lippe ([ˌɔstvɛstfaːlənˈlɪpə] , literally East(ern) Westphalia-Lippe, abbreviation OWL) is the eastern region of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, congruent with the administrative region of Detmold and containing the eastern part of Westphalia, joined with the Lippe region. The region has a population of about two million inhabitants. The major cities are Bielefeld, Paderborn, Gütersloh, Minden, Detmold, and Herford. The highest hill of Ostwestfalen-Lippe is the Totenkopf (498 m). Some major globally operating companies are headquartered in the region, for example Bertelsmann, Miele, Dr. Oetker, Melitta, Gerry Weber, DMG Mori Aktiengesellschaft, Hörmann, Schüco, Wincor Nixdorf, Phoenix Contact, HEGLA and Claas. In 2012 OWL became Germans BMBF Leading Edge Technology Cluster for intelligent Technical Systems (it's OWL ), which is currently the largest public funded project in the context of the government initiative "Industry 4.0". Universities are located in Bielefeld, Paderborn and Lemgo. The Fraunhofer Society is engaged in OWL in Lemgo and Paderborn. The Teutoburg Forest stretches across the region. It is the supposed site of the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest in the year 9 AD, where an alliance of Germanic tribes defeated a Roman army. In 1875, a statue was unveiled of the commander Arminius, who led the Germanics to victory at the battle. This statue, the Hermannsdenkmal, is one of the best-known sights in Ostwestfalen-Lippe.

Stadtgymnasium Detmold is a Gymnasium (grammar school) in Detmold in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Founded in 1830, Stadtgymnasium Detmold is the second oldest Gymnasium in Detmold.

Lippe State Library (Lippische Landesbibliothek Detmold) is the universal and regional library for Ostwestfalen-Lippe in Germany. It is based at Detmold.

The Detmold Open-air Museum (German: LWL-Freilichtmuseum Detmold – Westfälisches Landesmuseum für Volkskunde; English: "LWL Open-air Museum Detmold – Westphalian State Museum for Folkloristics") is a museum at Detmold in the Ostwestfalen-Lippe region of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It was founded, together with the Hagen Open-air Museum, in 1960, and was first opened to the public in the early 1970s. The museum is run by the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe (LWL, regional authority for Westphalia and Lippe within North Rhine-Westphalia).

Wiembecke is a river of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Its source is near the Externsteine in the Teutoburg Forest. It flows through Horn-Bad Meinberg and joins the Werre in Detmold. In its lower course the Wiembecke is also called Knochenbach and Berlebecke. Traditionally, the Wiembecke is however considered as being a tributary of the Berlebecke.

Oettern-Bremke is a village in the borough of Detmold in the district of Lippe in the German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia and lies about 5 km north of the town centre. The neighbouring Detmold villages are, in a clockwise direction, Bentrup, Loßbruch, Klüt, Jerxen-Orbke and Niewald. Oettern-Bremke was probably in the 13th century, like the neighbouring villages of Nienhagen and Niewald, founded as a Hagenhufendorf. The name Oettern comes from otters, that presumably lived in the nearby stream of the same name: Oetternbach. Bremke was mentioned as Bredenbeke in old documents dated 1322 and 1507. Formerly an independent municipality, it is part of the town Detmold since 1970. Around 153 villagers live in Oettern-Bremke on an area of 3.2 km² (as of August 2006). The current village chairman is Bernd Moritz (SPD), the representative in the Detmold town council is Wolfgang Köster (SPD).
