Free State of Coburg

Coburg (German pronunciation: [ˈkoːˌbʊʁk] ) is a town located on the Itz river in the Upper Franconia region of Bavaria, Germany. Long part of one of the Thuringian states of the Wettin line, it joined Bavaria by popular vote only in 1920. Until the revolution of 1918, it was one of the capitals of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld. Through successful dynastic policies, the ruling princely family married into several of the royal families of Europe, most notably in the person of Prince Albert, who married Queen Victoria in 1840. As a result of these close links with the royal houses of Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Coburg was frequently visited by the crowned heads of Europe and their families. Coburg is the location of Veste Coburg, one of Germany's largest castles. Today, Coburg's population is close to 41,500. Since it was little damaged in World War II, Coburg retains many historic buildings, making it a popular tourist destination.

The so-called Table Jura or Plateau Jura (German: Tafeljura; French: le Jura tabulaire) is the northeastern extension of the Jura Mountains. It stands in opposition to the folded Jura (Faltenjura) of the Jura range proper. The Table Jura stretches across the Swiss cantons of Basel-Landschaft, Aargau, and Schaffhausen (Randen) into southern Germany (Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria), including the Hoher Randen, Baar, the Swabian Jura and the Franconian Jura. The Table Jura thus ranges from near the Swiss city of Basel to the German city of Coburg.

Lauter is a river of Bavaria, Germany. It is a right tributary of the Itz in Coburg.

St. Augustine's Church (German: St. Augustin) is a parish church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bamberg located in the Bavarian town of Coburg, Germany. It was built between 1856 and 1860. Originally designed in the Gothic Revival style, the church was remodelled in 1960 due to a liturgical reform. There is a crypt under the church that contains the remains of fifteen members of the Koháry branch of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, a Roman Catholic branch of the originally Protestant ducal house.

Landestheater Coburg (Coburg State Theatre) is a medium-sized three-division (opera / operetta, drama, ballet) theatre in Coburg, Bavaria, Germany. Located on Schlossplatz, a central square, the Neoclassical building has 550 seats. In 2008, the theatre employed 250 permanent staff and 100 part-time employees.

Cortendorf is a north-eastern district of the Bavarian city of Coburg.With a population of 1.349 and a size of 1.65 square kilometres (160 ha; 0.64 sq mi) it has a population density of 818 inhabitants/km2. Cortendorf is the location of the Wirtschaftsschule of Coburg and the Kindergarten of Cortendorf. Industries include the machine tool factory Waldrich and the former brewery of Coburg Scheidmantel, but above all it is valued because of its greenery.

The Veste Coburg (Coburg Fortress) is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses of Germany. It is situated on a hill above the town of Coburg, in the Upper Franconia region of Bavaria.

Ehrenburg Palace (German: Schloss Ehrenburg) is a palace in Coburg, Franconia, Germany. It served as the main Coburg residence for the ruling princes from the 1540s until 1918. The palace's exterior today mostly reflects Gothic Revival style.

The Landesbibliothek Coburg is a regional state (scientific) library under the administration of the Free State of Bavaria. It has its seat in the Ehrenburg Palace in Coburg and brings together the historical book collections of the dukes reigning in Coburg and their relatives.

Morizkirche (or Stadtkirche St. Moriz) is a Protestant church dedicated to Saint Maurice in Coburg, Bavaria, Germany, and is the town's oldest church. Its earliest remaining structures date back to the 14th century, which superseded a church from the 12th century. Martin Luther is known to have given several sermons there in 1530 A.D. This church currently houses the family tomb of the Dukes of Coburg. In modern times, Morizkirche serves as the main church for the congregation of St. Moriz. Due to the height of its towers, the church is one of the landmarks of Coburg. It is also one of the most important Luther memorial sites in southern Germany.: 47–48 

The Casimirianum, known to the students as the "Casi", is a Gymnasium in Coburg, Bavaria. It was founded in 1605 by Johann Casimir, the Duke of Saxe-Coburg (1564–1633), and named after him. Today the Casimirianum is a linguistic and humanistic high school with the curriculum including Latin from 5th Grade, English from 6th Grade, and Italian, Greek, French or Spanish as the third compulsory foreign language. With the school year of 2009–10, the program was expanded with a scientific-technological branch with Latin as a second language. The Casimirianum was once involved with a German pilot program, "The European Gymnasium" and was one of 44 Model Schools of "MODUS21", but both programs were closed by 2009.

The Rose Garden (German: Rosengarten) is a park in Coburg, Bavaria, Germany, located between the Ketschentor (town gate) and the Angerturnhalle (a gym).
