Salcombe

Salcombe Castle or Fort Charles is a ruined fortification just off the beach of North Sands in Salcombe, Devon, England, within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is located on a rocky outcrop which is easily reached on foot at low tide. It is a Grade II listed building and ancient monument.The ruined structure includes a four-story 7 metres (23 ft) semicircular tower with gun ports near the top. It is connected by a section of wall to a rectangular tower which is 6 metres (20 ft) high.

Overbeck's Museum and Garden is an Edwardian house and 2.75 hectare (7 acre) garden at Sharpitor, Salcombe, Devon, England. It is named after its last private owner Otto Christop Joseph Gerhardt Ludwig Overbeck (1860–1937). Until 2014 the house was divided between a museum and a youth hostel. YHA Salcombe closed in 2014 when the agreement between the National Trust and The Youth Hostel Association broke down. The part of the house formerly used as the hostel is currently (2017) unused, and closed to the public.The museum houses displays of some of Overbeck's inventions and collections of stuffed animals, and exhibitions of model sailing ships and various nautical and shipbuilding tools and effects. There are display photographs of boats and shipwrecks (such as the Herzogin Cecilie). A room in the middle of the house, one of whose entrances is a secret door concealed in the wooden panelling of the room outside, contains a display of dolls' houses, amongst which is placed by staff "Fred the friendly ghost" for child visitors to discover. The museum contains a Polyphon — a large musical box which plays music encoded as holes punched in large sheet-metal discs. There is a collection of discs of popular melodies of the day which are played from time to time during the day when the museum is open. There is also a collection of photographs by Edward Chapman who worked in and photographed Salcombe – including the building of the first house on the site – during the early 20th century. The photographs have been reprinted from the original plates by Chapman's son and his grandson, Chris Chapman, who continues the family photography business in Plymouth. A tea room offers a variety of snacks and delectables, including Devonshire cream teas.

Salcombe Lifeboat Station is the base for Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) search and rescue operations at Salcombe, Devon in England. The first lifeboat was stationed in the town in 1869. The Salcombe Lifeboat has twice capsized, in 1916 with the loss of 13 lives, and in 1983 with no loss of life. Since 2008 the station has operated a Tamar-class all weather boat (ALB) and an Atlantic 75 inshore lifeboat (ILB).

Hallowe’en was a 920-ton iron clipper ship. She was built in 1870 by Maudslay, Son & Field at Greenwich, England, for Jock Willis & Sons (commissioned by John Willis, junior), and was a sister ship to the clipper ship Blackadder. Due to faults in Blackadder, which caused dismasting on her maiden voyage, Hallowe’en was not handed over to Willis for nearly 18 months after her launch due to protracted legal action.

Royal Air Force Hope Cove or more simply RAF Hope Cove is a former Royal Air Force radar station. It is located about 1 mile (1.6 km) south west of Salcombe on the south Devon coast, England, co-located with the former RAF Bolt Head airstrip, which was the RAF closed in 1945 but remains in service for general aviation to this day. Hope Cove was originally built in 1941 to host an AMES Type 7 ground control interception (GCI) station. In the 1950s it joined the ROTOR network and was upgraded with an AMES Type 80 radar. It was one of six Type 80 stations that featured a R6 bunker, which was semi-sunken. When the GCI role was moved to the new Master Radar Stations, the bunker was made redundant and taken over by the Home Office as a regional seat of government (RSG) bunker. Plans to move this station to Norton Manor Camp were never carried out, and it remained in use as a RSG (although the name change on occasion) until 1994 with the ending of the Cold War. The bunker is currently a Grade II Listed Building.

Bolt Head is a National Trust headland on the South Coast of Devon, England, United Kingdom, situated west of the Kingsbridge Estuary. It is a popular viewpoint on the South West Coast Path between Hope Cove, Bolt Tail, Bolberry Down and Salcombe.

The Kingsbridge Estuary (also, erroneously, known as the 'Salcombe Estuary') in the South Hams area of Devon, England runs from Kingsbridge in the north to its mouth at the English Channel near Salcombe and lies between Bolt Head and Sharpitor to the west and Portlemouth Down to the east. The estuary is some 8.6 kilometres (5.3 mi) in length, with numerous side channels. Several of its creeks have independent names, including Blanksmill, Frogmore, Southpool, Batson and Bowcombe Creek (the most northerly portion of the estuary). It covers an area of 674 hectares (1,670 acres) of which 446 hectares (1,100 acres) are inter-tidal. At high water the length of coast within the ria is 48.6 kilometres (30.2 mi). Although there are no major water courses entering the estuary, its total catchment area is 6,800 hectares (68 km2). The estuary is an extreme example of a ria or drowned river valley caused by rising sea levels rather than a true estuary. Prior to the sea level rise at the end of the last glacial period, it was the valley of a river. Its size is disproportionate to the size of the small streams which flow into it.In February 1987 the estuary was designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is a Local Nature Reserve and lies within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

Royal Air Force Bolt Head or more simply RAF Bolt Head is a former Royal Air Force satellite airfield 1 mile (1.6 km) south west of Salcombe on the south Devon coast, England from 1941 to 1945. During the Second World War it was used as a satellite for RAF Exeter. There were two runways, of 3,680 ft at 45° and 4,200 ft at 120°.The Ground Control Interceptor Station (GCI) RAF Hope Cove was established on the northeast side of the field in 1941 to direct fighter operations in the English Channel. Unlike the airfield, Hope Cove remained in use into the 1990s. Today the World War II buildings are almost all gone but a memorial to the airfield's war-time history exists in the centre of the site, two notable post-war buildings survive including a large R6 Rotor bunker (used until 1994 as a Regional Seat of Government) and a grass airstrip is still used occasionally by light aircraft. The landowners also hosted an air display there in 2009 which saw a Hurricane and Spitfire visit the airfield for the first time since the war.

East Portlemouth is a village and civil parish in the South Hams district, in the county of Devon, England, situated at the southern end of the Kingsbridge Estuary, on the south Devon Coast. The population of this parish taken at the 2011 census was 162. The village is sited on a hill giving views to the north to Kingsbridge and on a clear day as far as Dartmoor. There is a small ferry that runs to Salcombe in the opposite side of the estuary, and a beach that is popular with holidaymakers. The place-name 'Portlemouth' is first attested in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it appears as Porlamuta. This is thought to derive from the Old English Portwellan-mutha, meaning 'mouth of the port well', that is to say 'mouth of the harbour stream', the village being at the mouth of a river.The village is popular with celebrities as a second-home base, where home owners include Steve Rider, Kate Bush and Michael Parkinson.

Malborough is a village and civil parish in the South Hams region of Devon. The village is located on the A381 between Kingsbridge and Salcombe, and is a popular village for tourists, with many holiday homes located around the village. In 2011 the parish had a population of 971. Malborough can be seen from many miles away throughout the South Hams region, due to its magnificent church spire, which is located at the highest point of the village. The Church of All Saints dates from the 13th Century and is built from local Soar stone. The Right Honourable John Stapleton de Courcy, 28th Baron Kingsale, is interred in the churchyard, with other members of the de Courcy family. The village is home to a small co-op supermarket and a petrol station. The village has an Anglican and a Baptist church, two pubs, a large village hall and playing fields with children's play equipment and an outdoor gym, a hotel, a primary school, a post office and a football team. There is also an active youth club which runs at the Baptist Church

Kingsbridge Community College is a co-educational secondary school and sixth form with academy status, located in Kingsbridge in the English county of Devon.Previously a foundation school administered by Devon County Council, Kingsbridge Community College converted to academy status on 1 January 2011. However the school continues to coordinate with Devon County Council for admissions. Kingsbridge Community College offers GCSEs and BTECs as programmes of study for pupils, while students in the sixth form have the option to study from a range of A Levels, NVQs and further BTECs.

Bowcombe Creek is a tidal creek in Kingsbridge, Devon, England. It is the most northerly creek of the Kingsbridge Estuary. The creek is fed by a stream to the north and is located one mile south-east of Kingsbridge. The A379 road crosses the southern portion of the creek over the so-called New Bridge. This bridge over the estuary was constructed by James Meadows Rendel in 1826. It was originally made of four masonry arches and an opening span, but this was eventually replaced with a fifth arch.
