The Charlottesville car attack was a white supremacist terrorist attack perpetrated on August 12, 2017, when James Alex Fields Jr. deliberately drove his car into a crowd of people peacefully protesting the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, killing one person and injuring 35. Fields, 20, had previously espoused neo-Nazi and white supremacist beliefs, and drove from Ohio to attend the rally.Fields' attack was called an act of domestic terrorism by the mayor of Charlottesville, Virginia's public safety secretary, the U.S. attorney general, and the director of the FBI. Fields was convicted in a state court of the first-degree murder of 32-year-old Heather Heyer, eight counts of malicious wounding, and hit and run. He also pled guilty to 29 of 30 federal hate crime charges to avoid the death penalty. He was sentenced to life in prison plus 419 years for the state charges, with an additional life sentence for the federal charges.

Charlottesville, colloquially known as C'ville, is an independent city in Virginia, United States. It is the seat of government of Albemarle County, which surrounds the city, though the two are separate legal entities. It is named after Queen Charlotte. At the 2020 census, the population of the city was 46,553. The Bureau of Economic Analysis combines the City of Charlottesville with Albemarle County for statistical purposes, bringing its population to approximately 160,000. Charlottesville is the heart of the Charlottesville metropolitan area, which includes Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna, Greene, and Nelson counties. Charlottesville was the home of two U.S. presidents, Thomas Jefferson and James Monroe. During their terms as Governor of Virginia, they lived in Charlottesville, and traveled to and from Richmond, along the 71-mile (114 km) historic Three Notch'd Road. Orange, located 26 miles (42 km) northeast of the city, was the hometown of President James Madison. The University of Virginia, founded by Jefferson, straddles the city's southwestern border. The Ficklin–Crawford Cottage was a historic house located at Charlottesville, Virginia. It was built sometime between 1865 and 1886, and was a 1+1⁄2-story, three-bay, frame dwelling with Gothic Revival style decorative details. It had a steep bellcast gable roof with deeply projecting eaves. It originally stood on the southwest corner of Belmont Avenue and Castalia Street, and moved to its final site in 1929.The house suffered a fire in October 1981, and the owner's insurance deemed it a total loss. Despite the damage, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 21, 1982. However, on November 24 of the same year, the city government granted the owner's request for permission to demolish the structure.

The Downtown Mall in Charlottesville, Virginia is one of the longest pedestrian malls in the United States. Located on Main Street, it runs from 6th St. N.E. to Old Preston Ave., where it extends to Water St., for total length of eight blocks. It is laid with brick and concrete, and home to an array of restaurants, shops, offices and art galleries. On Fridays in the spring, summer and fall, the Downtown Mall is host to Fridays After 5, a weekly concert series. Several side streets are also paved in brick and likewise closed to traffic. On the east, the Mall ends at the Ting Pavilion, an outdoor concert venue, while the west end of the Mall features an Omni Hotel. It is also home to the newly renovated Paramount Theater and the historic Jefferson Theater.

Carter–Gilmer House is a historic home located at Charlottesville, Virginia. It was built about 1820, and is a three-story, three-bay, Federal style brick townhouse dwelling. The house has been divided into apartments.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Daughters of Zion Cemetery, also known as Zion Cemetery, Society Cemetery, and Old Oakwood Section, is a historic African-American cemetery located at Charlottesville, Virginia, United States. It was established in 1873, and contains an estimated 300 burial sites with 152 of the burials commemorated with 136 surviving grave markers. It consists exclusively of marble and granite grave markers with a single 20 foot by 20 foot section enclosed with a cast-iron fence. Notable burials include Benjamin Tonsler (1854–1917), who built the Benjamin Tonsler House. The city assumed title to the property in the 1970s, and the last burial occurred in 1995.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.

The Paramount Theater in Charlottesville, Virginia, United States, was designed by Rapp and Rapp and opened in 1931 as a movie theater. The Paramount continued showing movies until it closed in 1974. In 1990, a group of community members purchased the theater, formed a non-profit corporation, and began raising funds for its restoration and expansion. In late 2004, the Paramount re-opened after an $18 million renovation. It is operated by a non-profit organization and is a performing arts venue. Beginning in 2009, the theater has played host to performances by the Charlottesville Opera.

At Ready (1909) is a memorial of a Confederate soldier originally located in front of the Albemarle County Courthouse in downtown Charlottesville, Virginia. The statue, popularly known as "Johnny Reb," and accompanying objects were removed on September 12, 2020. The statue and nearby cannon, and cannonballs were removed to be placed on display at the Third Winchester Battlefield, part of the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields National Historic District.

The Jefferson Theater, a former movie palace, is a performing arts venue located at 110 East Main Street in Charlottesville, Virginia, and is the centerpiece of the Historic Downtown Mall. Built in 1912, this combination vaudeville house/cinema is one of the major performing venues in Charlottesville, Virginia. Operated most recently as one of the dollar theaters, it is currently owned by Coran Capshaw, who oversaw restoration which has now been completed. It was designed by architect C.K. Howell, who also designed the November Theatre in nearby Richmond, Virginia.Before closing for renovations in the spring of 2006, one of the final performances was a concert by the Charlottesville-based bluegrass band, King Wilkie.

Albemarle County Courthouse Historic District is a historic courthouse and national historic district located at Charlottesville, Virginia. The district encompasses 22 contributing buildings and 1 contributing object (the Thomas Jonathan Jackson sculpture) centered on Court Square. The original section of the courthouse was built in 1803 in the Federal style and is now the north wing. The courthouse is a two-story, five-bay, T-shaped brick building with a Greek Revival style portico. Other notable buildings include the Levy Opera House (c. 1851), Number Nothing (c. 1820), Redland Club (c. 1832), and Eagle Tavern.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The district was incorporated into the Charlottesville and Albemarle County Courthouse Historic District in 1982.

Thomas Jonathan Jackson is a historic bronze equestrian statue of Confederate general Stonewall Jackson which was formerly located at Courthouse Historic District of Charlottesville, Virginia and installed in 1921. The statue was sculpted by Charles Keck and was the third of four works commissioned from members of the National Sculpture Society by philanthropist Paul Goodloe McIntire. It was the second of three statues McIntire donated to the city of Charlottesville, which he did over a period of five years from 1919 to 1924. The statue was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.

Court Square Park (formerly Jackson Park and Justice Park) is a public park in Charlottesville, Virginia. Court Square Park is 0.4 acres bounded by Jefferson Street, Fourth Street N.E., High Street and the Albemarle County Court Building. Paul Goodloe McIntire established the park in 1919 by donating the land to the city of Charlottesville.The park was originally named Jackson Park after Confederate general Stonewall Jackson. A statue of Jackson on horseback, Thomas Jonathan Jackson, was placed there in 1921.In November 2016 the Blue Ribbon Commission on Race, Memorials and Public Spaces published a report recommending transforming the statue into a monument for remembering racial oppression and to change the name from Jackson Park. In June 2017, the city council voted to change the name to Justice Park, and in July 2018, the name was changed again to Court Square Park.The statue was removed on July 10, 2021.
