Abbot Academy

Phillips Academy (also known as PA, Phillips Academy Andover, or simply Andover) is a co-educational university-preparatory school for boarding and day students in grades 9–12, along with a post-graduate year. The school is in Andover, Massachusetts, United States, 25 miles north of Boston. Phillips Academy has 1,131 students, and is highly selective, accepting 9% for the 2022–2023 school year. It is part of the Eight Schools Association and the Ten Schools Admissions Organization. Founded in 1778, Andover is one of the oldest incorporated secondary schools in the United States. It has educated a long list of notable alumni through its history, including American presidents George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush, foreign heads of state, numerous members of Congress, five Nobel laureates and six Medal of Honor recipients.It became coeducational in 1973, the year in which it merged with its neighbor girls' school Abbot Academy.

Paresky Commons (colloquially known as "Commons") is Phillips Academy's main dining facility. Designed by architect Charles Platt and constructed by Thompson Starrett, Commons was built in the 1920s Colonial Revival style. Located in Flagstaff Quadrangle (designed by the Olmsted brothers), it is the social hub of Andover. Today, Commons aims to serve healthy food from diverse backgrounds while still accounting for dietary needs and sustainability.

The Addison Gallery of American Art is an academic museum dedicated to collecting American art, organized as a department of Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts.

WPAA was a radio station, broadcasting from the campus of Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. Founded using Phillips alum and then-NBC president Robert Sarnoff's gift of $15,000, the station was launched in 1965 by a host of famous personalities, including Bob Hope, Jack Lemmon, David Brinkley, Sammy Davis Jr., and Hugh Downs. The station's signal was powered by a 33 watt transmitter and reached over 104 square kilometers, which, at launch, had the potential to reach over 150,000 people. Following the loss of Phillips Academy's station equipment and the general decline of radio, WPAA refocused resources as a music studio, offering recording opportunities for student performers and providing live sound equipment for nearly all campus events, including the station's "Battle of the Bands" every spring.

The Andover Inn is a historic inn located on the campus of Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts. It was built upon the site of a stone building that had once been lived in by Harriet Beecher Stowe. It was first built in 1930 and was known as the Phillips Inn until 1940. It is located on Chapel Avenue next to the Addison Gallery of American Art.The building was designed by Sidney Wagner with Charles A. Platt as the supervising architect. It is a three story Georgian style building. The front of the building features a recessed porch with white columns that is flanked by two wings. The building also features multi-pane double hung windows and French doors. There is a slate gambrel roof. The back of the building now overlooks a pond, but it previously featured a view of a large perennial garden that was tended by original innkeeper's wife.Many of its visitors are relatives of current or prospective Andover students. It also receives visitors who are in the area for other reasons. The Inn has always been owned by the school but has always been independently managed. In 2008 Phillips Academy filed a lawsuit against the company that had managed the inn for three years. The suit claimed that the management company did not pay its rent. The hotel is now managed by Waterford Hotel Group. In 2009 the Inn was shut down and remodeled for 15 months. It was the first major renovation since 1930. It now features a fine-dining restaurant known as Samuel’s. The hotel retained much of its original architecture, but it was expanded to thirty rooms and two private function spaces, each able to contain up to 50 people.

The Robert S. Peabody Institute of Archaeology, formerly known as the Robert S. Peabody Museum of Archaeology, is a learning center and archaeological collection in Andover, Massachusetts. Founded in 1901 through a bequest from Robert Singleton Peabody, 1857 Phillips Academy alumnus, the institute initially held the archaeological materials collected by Peabody from Native American cultures. Peabody's passionate interest in archaeology led him to create the institute at Phillips Academy to encourage young people's interest in the sciences, and to foster respect and appreciation for the Native American peoples who have inhabited that hemisphere for thousands of years. The Peabody's major collections include artifacts and material from the Southwest, Northeast, Midwest, Mexico, Southeast, and the Arctic. The date range represented by these collections spans from Paleo Indian (10,000+ years ago) to the present day.

The Academy Hill Historic District is a historic district on Massachusetts Route 28 in Andover, Massachusetts. It encompasses the historic campuses of three important 18th and 19th century academic institutions, which shaped not only town but the nation's educational systems.The first school established in Andover was the Phillips Academy, established in 1778. Its campus includes a number of notable buildings, from two important building phases. The first, between about 1810 and 1830, resulted in the construction of Bulfinch Hall (1819, named for, but not designed by, Charles Bulfinch), Samaritan Hall (1824, at first an infirmary, but later used for other purposes), and the Stowe House (1828, remodeled by Harriet Beecher Stowe in the 1850s, and later used as an inn). The second building phase was in the early decades of the 20th century, when Bell Tower, Morse Hall, and Addison Gallery were built.The campus of the Andover Theological Seminary (founded 1807) includes the oldest building in the district, Foxcroft Hall, which was built in 1808. Along with Pearson Hall (1818) and Bartlet Hall (1820), it is a fine example of Federalist academic architecture. The latter two buildings underwent some changes, most notably being reduced from four to three stories to better fit the scale of the campus, in the 20th century. The campus also includes the 1809 Phelps House, which housed the first president of the academy, and later Professor Austin Phelps.The third school in the district is the Abbot Academy, which was founded in 1828 as a women's school. It merged with the Phillips Academy in 1973, but its former central campus retains definition, with three buildings surrounding the "Abbot Circle": Abbot Hall, the original academy building (1829), Draper Hall, a dormitory (1890), and McKeen Hall.The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The Chandler-Hidden House is a historic house in Andover, Massachusetts. It was built for Isaac Chandler, probably by his son-in-law David Hidden, in about 1812. Hidden, a housewright, had come to Andover to help in the construction of the Andover Theological Seminary. He married Chandler's daughter in 1816, bought half the house in 1828, and the rest after Chandler's death in 1834. The house passed out of the Hidden family in 1897. It is a 2+1⁄2-story Federal style colonial, with five window bays and two side chimneys. The centered front door is protected by a protruding portico, and there is a rear ell that appears to be original to the house.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The Holt-Cummings-Davis House is a historic house located in Andover, Massachusetts. It is estimated to have been built around 1700 at a location across the street, and nothing is known of its owners at the time. The first recorded owner was William Hawley, who bought it in 1803. It was purchased in 1835 by Job Abbott as a wedding present for is daughter Lucy, who married Joseph Holt. Under their ownership it was moved to its present location, and a new house was built on the old site. This house was next owned by Daniel Cummings, who married into the Holt family. In 1895 the property was bought by Augustus Davis, whose family owned it until 1935. The house itself is an unusual 1+1⁄2-story First Period house, six irregularly spaced bays wide, with a slightly off-center chimney. The house has been restored, and a large modern addition has been added to its west end. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The Main Street–Locke Street Historic is a residential historic district in Andover, Massachusetts. It is located along Main Street north of Academy Hill, between Morton Street and Punchard Avenue. It also includes several houses on Locke Street, Punchard, and Chapman Avenue.The oldest buildings in the district date to 1819, at a period when the area only saw modest growth due to the nearby academic institutions. The conversion of one of these houses into Locke's Tavern in 1825 brought some additional growth along Main Street, resulting in the construction of several Greek Revival houses. The most significant growth in the area came in the second half of the 19th century, when a number of Queen Anne, Shingle style, and Colonial Revival houses were built. Most of these buildings were large, and are now either multifamily residences of housing for the schools. Two of the buildings on Locke Street were built for fraternal organizations, one of which, the November Club at 6 Locke Street, is believed to be the oldest women's club building in New England.Despite the variety of architectural styles represented, the district has some uniformity in the proportion and setback of the houses, especially on Main Street. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The Andover Public Schools district is the public school district for the town of Andover, Massachusetts. Overseeing 10 educational facilities, ranging from pre-kindergarten to the 12th grade, the district is administrated by superintendent Magda Parvey, who reports directly to an elected school committee, consisting of five residents of the town elected for three-year terms.
