Water Tower Simpelveld

Simpelveld (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈsɪmpəlˌvɛlt] (listen); Limburgish: Zumpelveld [ˈzɵm˦pəlˌvælt˦]) is a municipality and a town in the southeastern Netherlands. It is part of the municipal cooperative unit Parkstad Limburg. Simpelveld is part of the Mergelland, named after the presence of chalk (mergel), hill country popular with tourists. The Mergellandroute passes through the town. The population centre of Simpelveld has 28 national monuments, amongst which are the Oude Molen and the Saint Remigius Church. Simpelveld has a heritage railway station and is the home base of the South Limburg Railway Company. On one weekend in October there is a Day out with Thomas from the children's television series Thomas and Friends.

The Saint Remigius Church (Dutch: Sint-Remigiuskerk) is a Roman Catholic church building in Simpelveld, The Netherlands. It is a neoroman cross shaped church with three naves, a tower with a waisted top, and a round apse. It is completely made up out of Kunradersteen, a local variant of chalk. The building is used as parish church for the local Saint Remigius parish. Patron saint for the church is Saint Remigius. Due to the inventory of the church, it has been listed as a rijksmonument, making it a national heritage site of the Netherlands.

The Zuid-Limburgse Stoomtrein Maatschappij (South Limburg Steam Train Company) or ZLSM is a heritage railway operating from its main station of Simpelveld to Schin op Geul and Kerkrade in the south of the Netherlands. It also runs across the border from Simpelveld to Aachen-Vetschau and has an extensive collection of stock. The ZLSM is currently partnered with the Great Central Railway in England, as they have both double-track railways, although one is disused.

Molsberg (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈmɔlzbɛr(ə)x]), English: Mols hill) is a hamlet in the southeastern Netherlands. It is located close to the village of Simpelveld in the municipality of Simpelveld, Limburg, about 20 km east of Maastricht. The village has a population of 300 people after it was expanded with 54 new houses in 2004. The name Molsberg refers to the hill (berg) it is built on and to the Mols family. Molsberg is also the name of the hill the village is built on. This hill goes up to 212m with an average incline of 4% and is part of the Amstel Gold Race. The farm located at Molsberg 96 dates from 1732 and has been designated a national monument.

The Oude Molen (English: Old Mill) or Molen van Houben (English: Houben's Mill) is a watermill located on the Oude Molenweg 6 in Simpelveld, Netherlands. Built in 1774 along the Eyserbeek river, the watermill functioned as gristmill until the 1960s. During this time it was restored several times. In 1960 the mill stopped functioning, and a year later the land upstream was disowned by the local government. Currently it functions as housing. The mill is a national monument (nr 33593). Of the original mill only the millhouse and the iron breastshot water wheel, with corresponding flume, remain.

Baneheide (Dutch pronunciation: [ˌbaːnəˈɦɛidə]; Ripuarian: De Boanhei [də boənˈɦɛi] is a hamlet in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is a part of the municipality of Simpelveld, and lies about 9 km southwest of Kerkrade. It was first mentioned in 1603 or 1604 as Baenenheidt, and means "cultivated heath".

Imstenrade (Limburgish: Imsterao) is a hamlet in the southeastern Netherlands. It is part of the municipality of Heerlen in the province of Limburg, about 20 km east of Maastricht. The village lies between Benzenrade and Simpelveld, next to the A76 motorway and the N281 provincial road. In 2014 the village had a population of 336 and was home to an immigration detention centre with space for 700 immigrants.

Bulkemsbroek (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈbʏlkəmzbruk]; Limburgish: D'r Bulkemsbróch [dəʀ ˈbʏl(ə)kəmzbʀʊx]) is a hamlet in the southeastern Netherlands. It is located close to the village of Simpelveld in the municipality of Simpelveld, Limburg, about 20 km east of Maastricht. The village has a population of 30 people. The name Bulkemsbroek refers to swampland (broek) close to the land of the Bullo family (Bulkem). On the molenbeek, a sidestream of the river Eyserbeek, lies the Bulkemsmolen. This watermill was built in 1753 and has been designated a national monument.

Huls (Limburgish: De Huls) is a hamlet in the southeastern Netherlands. It is part of the municipality of Simpelveld in the province of Limburg, about 20 km east of Maastricht. The village lies on a hill, north of Simpelveld, and south of Ubachsberg. In 2008 the village had a population of 350 on an area of 0.44 km2. On the hillside south of Huls lies Hulsveld, a hamlet sharing the same name with a population of 1630. Since the hamlets share a single built-up area, and are both located on the hill called Huls, the village Huls is sometimes mistaken to include Hulsveld.

Bocholtz (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈbɔxɔlts]; Ripuarian: Bóches [ˈbʊχəs] is a town in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is a part of the municipality of Simpelveld, and lies about 7 km southwest of Kerkrade. Until 1982, it was a separate municipality.

The Bulkemsmolen (English: Bulkem's Mill) is a former watermill located on the Bulkemstraat 43 in Bulkemsbroek, Simpelveld, Netherlands. Built in 1753 along the Eyserbeek river, the watermill functioned as gristmill until 1978. Currently it functions as housing for a local farm. The mill is a national monument (nr 33588) since 1967. Of the original mill only the millhouse, wooden overshot water wheel, of 3.9m diameter and 1.2m width, and the mill race remain.

The James the Greater Church (Dutch: Jacobus de Meerderekerk) is a Roman Catholic church, located on the Pastoor Neujeanstraat 6 in Bocholtz, Netherlands. First mentioned in the 14th century, the current church was built in 1869 by Pierre Cuypers. It was extended by Harry Koene in 1953, creating a larger choir, and adding an apse and sacristy. The building has been in continues use as a parish church for the Bocholtz saint James the Greater parish since 1873. The church holds a relic of pope Cornelius, which was subject of a yearly pilgrimage during the early and mid 20th century, and was listed as a national monument in 1967.
