Farnham Church is a historic Episcopal church located at Farnham, Richmond County, Virginia. It was built in 1737, and is a one-story, cruciform shaped brick Colonial era church building. It measures 63 feet, 8 inches, feet by 58 feet, 2 inches, and is topped by a gable roof. Two years into the War of 1812, bullet holes were left in the walls during a conflict between the Virginia militia and the British fleet, led by Admiral George Cockburn. This event was called the Skirmish at Farnham Church. During the Civil War the church was used by Union soldiers as a stable. The church was last renovated in 1921 in the Georgian Revival style.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Skirmish at Farnham Church

The Skirmish at Farnham Church was an engagement during the War of 1812. The British bombarded North Farnham Church and assaulted the church on land. The strength of either side is unknown, but the battle was fought between British troops and Virginia militia. The engagement at the northern end of the Farnham Church complex occurred on December 6, 1814, the British failed to capture their target.

Northern Neck George Washington Birthplace AVA

The Northern Neck George Washington Birthplace AVA is an American Viticultural Area in eastern portion of the state of Virginia. Wines made from grapes grown in Westmoreland, King George, Northumberland, Lancaster, and Richmond counties may use this appellation. The area is located on a peninsula of land between the Potomac and Rappahannock rivers in the Tidewater region of Virginia and known as the Northern Neck. This provides a climate which features more frost free days than the rest of Virginia. The tip of the Northern Neck is located at the Chesapeake Bay. The hardiness zone is 7b.

Northern Neck

The Northern Neck is the northernmost of three peninsulas (traditionally called "necks" in Virginia) on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay in the Commonwealth of Virginia (along with the Middle Peninsula and the Virginia Peninsula). The Potomac River forms the northern boundary of the peninsula; the Rappahannock River demarcates it on the south. The Northern Neck encompasses the following Virginia counties: Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond, and Westmoreland; it had a total population of 50,158 as of the 2020 census.Commentators vary as to whether to include King George County in the Northern Neck. Historically, Charles II's grant for the Northern Neck included all land between the Rappahannock and Potomac rivers, including far upstream of King George County—some 5 million acres. The boundaries of King George and Westmoreland counties have changed radically since their establishment, with significant exchanges of territory. Significant portions of the early King George County lay in present-day Westmoreland County.
