East Somerville

The Charles Williams Jr. House, built in 1858, is a historic house in Somerville, Massachusetts. Charles Williams Jr. was a manufacturer of electrical telegraph instruments at 109 Court Street in Boston. Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas A. Watson experimented with the telephone in Williams' shop, and it was there that they first heard indistinct sounds transmitted on June 2, 1875. The first permanent residential telephone service in the world was installed at this house in 1877, connecting Williams' home with his shop on Court Street in Boston. Williams had telephone Numbers 1 and 2 of the Bell Telephone Company.

The Walter J. Squire House in Somerville, Massachusetts is a well-preserved transitional Italianate/Queen Anne house. The basic 2.5-story, front gable, three bay side entrance layout was fairly typical for Italianate houses in the city, as are the paired cornice brackets and hoods over the windows. The porch, however, has Queen Anne elements, including turned posts and the rising sun motif on its gable.In 1989 the house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the House at 10 Arlington Street.

The house at 81 Pearl Street in Somerville, Massachusetts is a well-preserved Italianate house. The 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame house was built c. 1860, and features a deep front gable with paired decorative brackets, and a front porch supported by square columns, with an unusual scalloped-arch cornice trim. It is among the best-preserved of the period worker housing built in East Somerville at that time. An early occupant was Benjamin Gage, a machinist.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Sityodtong USA, also known as Team Sityodtong, is a Muay Thai and mixed martial arts training camp based out of Somerville, Massachusetts. The headquarters of Sityodtong Camp is in Pattaya, Thailand. Its Grandmaster is Yodtong Senanan and he has produced 57 Muay Thai Champions, the largest number in the history of Muay Thai in Thailand. The owner and head trainer of Sityodtong Boston, Mark DellaGrotte, is a teacher of various styles of Muay Thai such as Mae Mai Muay Thai, Pradal Serey, Muay Boran, Muay Lao, and also Burmese Boxing. The team members includes MMA fighters such as Marcus Davis, Dale Hartt, and Patrick Côté. Between UFC 67 and UFC 85, Team Sityodtong did not lose a fight in the UFC.

The House at 29 Mt. Vernon Street in Somerville, Massachusetts is a well-preserved Greek Revival cottage. The 1+1⁄2-story wood-frame house was built in the late 1840s, when Mt. Vernon Street was a site of significant development activity. The house is distinctive on the street, as most of the other houses are larger. This house features wide eaves, and a full pedimented gable end above a porch with Ionic columns. It has an elaborate front door surrounded, with framed paneling and pilasters.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

The Mount Vernon Street Historic District is a historic district consisting of the even-numbered houses at 8–24 Mount Vernon Street in Somerville, Massachusetts. The district includes four modest Greek Revival houses built c. 1850, an earlier Federal period house, and a late 19th century Second Empire house, representing a progression of housing styles through the 19th century. The houses at 8, 12, 16, and 20 Mount Vernon are all well conserved Greek Revival 1+1⁄2-story buildings with side hall layout, although #12 has had synthetic siding applied. The house at #16 has preserved more of its exterior detailing than the others, while #20 is distinctive for its use of flushboard siding, giving the house the appearance of ashlar masonry work. Behind the house at #12 is a second house that is some external Greek Revival styling, but has a five bay center entrance layout more typical of the Federal period; it is known to predate the house in front of it. The duplex at 22-24 Mount Vernon has a mansard roof characteristic of the Second Empire style; its construction date is estimated to be c. 1880.Mount Vernon Street was platted out in 1845, and was located near the railroad line which had been laid across the Charlestown Neck in 1835. The area, which had previously been largely rural, developed as a comparatively suburban area with ready access to Boston, and was one of the earliest parts of what became Somerville to be developed in this way. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

The Gustavus G. Prescott House is a historic house in Somerville, Massachusetts. It is a rare five-bay center-entry Greek Revival house to survive in East Somerville. The 2+1⁄2-story wood-frame house was built in the 1840s, along with a matching building at 69–71, which has lost historical integrity. The owner, Gustavus Prescott, was a Charlestown merchant who is said to have operated an inn on the premises.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

The Ursuline Convent riots occurred August 11 and 12, 1834, in Charlestown, Massachusetts, near Boston, in what is now Somerville, Massachusetts. During the riot, a convent of Roman Catholic Ursuline nuns was burned down by a Protestant mob. The event was triggered by reported abuse of a member of the order, and was fueled by the rebirth of extreme anti-Catholic sentiment in antebellum New England.

The Daniel Worthen House is a historic house in Somerville, Massachusetts. The modest 1+1⁄2-story wood-frame house was first owned by Daniel Worthen, a distiller, and is notable as a rare example of Gothic Revival styling in East Somerville. The house has a jigsaw-cut foliate vergeboard on its gable. It has a three-bay front facade, with a front-facing gable roof and a single-story shed-roof porch supported by turned posts.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

The Samuel Ireland House is a historic house in Somerville, Massachusetts. It is a 1+1⁄2-story vernacular cottage, five bays wide, with a side gable roof pierced by two dormers, and a projecting gable-roofed vestibule at the center of its front facade. The house was built c. 1792 by Samuel Ireland, a farmer. It is the oldest documented house in eastern Somerville, and one of the oldest in the city.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Sullivan Square is a rapid transit station in Boston, Massachusetts. It serves the MBTA's Orange Line, and is also a major bus transfer point. It is located just west of the Sullivan Square traffic circle in the Charlestown neighborhood, adjacent to East Somerville. The modern subway station was built in 1975, and replaced an earlier Charlestown Elevated station established in 1901.

The Charles Williams House is a historic house in Somerville, Massachusetts. The 2+1⁄2-story wood frame Italianate house was built c. 1848 for Charles Williams, a hat dealer. The central projecting section has a Palladian window on the second floor, above a recessed entranceway where the door is surrounded by sidelight and transom windows. It is one of a small number of surviving Italianate homes in the city, and is one of the oldest of that style.The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
