The Ribble Steam Railway is a standard gauge preserved railway in Lancashire, in the United Kingdom. It was opened to the public on 17 September 2005, running along Preston Docks. The railway began by housing much of the collection from the previously closed Southport Railway Museum (Steamport), which was based in the old Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway engine shed at Southport (BR shed code 27C). The railway lines around Preston Dock largely fell into disuse after the closure of the docks. A preservation group that was operating in Southport relocated to Preston in 1999 and started operations as the Ribble Steam Railway in 2005. Its operations base is at Preston Riverside but they run trains as far as Strand Road although there is no facility for locomotives to run round their train here. The Riverside station is quite a way from Preston city centre, but proposals have been made for a platform to be constructed at Strand Road. This would be close to the Portway terminus of the Preston park and ride service, Guild Wheel walking trail and the River Ribble.

Preston Riverside railway station is the only station on the heritage Ribble Steam Railway, in Riversway, Preston, Lancashire, England. It was built and opened in 2005, adjacent to the museum and workshops, while providing a heritage service to Strand Road Crossing. The basic station is one platform, which can accommodate 5 coaches, built onto the side of the museum of the railway. Opposite the station, there is a single siding for storage of bitumen tanks, and one run-round loop. There is very little on the actual station, however there are a couple of plant pots, benches and information displays.Services from the station are hourly, and they go to the Strand Road Crossing. These services are only available during the railway operating season and on special events.

Riversway was an electoral ward in Preston, Lancashire, England. The ward was named for its location close to the River Ribble, and the historical links to the former Port of Preston. The ward comprised three distinct areas; the former Docklands, now a shopping area and residential community, with new build apartments and housing overlooking the dock; Broadgate, the residential area built during the Industrial Revolution; and Christ Church, a community of traditional terraced housing. The ward contained the administrative headquarters of Lancashire County Council. Riversway returned three members to Preston City Council, elected 'in thirds' in first past the post elections each year. The ward formed part of the Lancashire County Council electoral division of Preston City. The ward was abolished for the 2019 Preston City Council election. The Docklands area was transferred to Ashton ward; areas east of the A582 Strand Road/Guild Way became part of the new City Centre ward.

Larches is one of the districts of Preston, Lancashire, England. The area, north-west of Preston city centre, is a mix of social and private housing, although both components of the ward – Larches, and Savick – are largely post-war council estates. Ashton Park is in the middle of the current ward, which borders Riversway and the civil parish of Lea. The area of Larches is part of Ashton-on-Ribble, which was part of the former hundred of Amounderness. With small businesses and shops in the area, the population are largely commute-to-work families and retirees. The citywide Preston Bus service runs through both sides of the Larches ward, and routes operated by Stagecoach between Preston and Blackpool also serve the area. Three members of Preston City Council, elected 'in thirds' in first past the post elections each year, are returned from the ward. The ward and neighbouring Ashton forms part of the Lancashire County Council electoral division of Preston North West.

Ashton Park is situated in Ashton-on-Ribble to the west of Preston, Lancashire, England. It has one bowling green, two play areas, with swings, roundabouts and climbing frames, several football pitches within a large, main field, and contains within it a magnificent country house. It is the headquarters of the Armed Forces Group, Dig in North West and Let's Grow Preston. These are all situated within the walled garden that also contains the Peace garden the fruit garden and Ashton Community Garden. It also has a beautiful woodland area, ornamental gardens and many flower beds. Ashton House, the large country house within the park, has recently undergone extensive repair and restoration and is particularly well used as a children's nursery school. Extensive parking facilities are provided in the park which is located immediately to the south of Blackpool Road, which proceeds westwards to Cottam. Nearby on the southern side are the docks, and Riversway complex, containing many offices and shops including Morrisons, McDonald's, and Pets at Home. To the west are the Larches and Savick estates and Lea.

Ashton Community Science College is a coeducational secondary school located in the Ashton-on-Ribble area of Preston in the English county of Lancashire.It is a community school administered by Lancashire County Council. The school also has a specialism in science. Feeder primary schools include Ashton Primary School and St Andrews CE Primary School in Ashton-on-Ribble, Lea Community Primary School and Lea Endowed CE Primary School in Lea, and Cottam Primary School in Cottam.Ashton Community Science College offers GCSEs, BTECs and OCR Nationals as programmes of study for pupils. The school also offers The Duke of Edinburgh's Award programme.

The River Ribble runs through North Yorkshire and Lancashire in Northern England. It starts close to the Ribblehead Viaduct in North Yorkshire, and is one of the few that start in the Yorkshire Dales and flow westwards towards the Irish Sea (the Dee in Dentdale and the Twiss in Kingsdale being notable others).

Penwortham Priory Academy is a coeducational secondary school located in Penwortham in the English county of Lancashire.Previously a community school administered by Lancashire County Council, Priory Sports and Technology College converted to academy status on 1 November 2012 and was renamed Penwortham Priory Academy. However the school continues to coordinate with Lancashire County Council for admissions. Penwortham Priory Academy offers GCSEs as programmes of study for pupils. The school also offers some vocational courses in conjunction with Myerscough College and Runshaw College.

Tulketh Priory was a priory in Ashton-on-Ribble, Lancashire, England. The priory was the home of a group of Cistercian monks from Savigny Abbey in Normandy until they moved to Furness Abbey in 1127. Tulketh Hall was later built on the site of the priory.

Howick Cross is a landmark and small hamlet in Penwortham, South Ribble, Lancashire, England. It is located just over 2 miles south west of the city of Preston. The hamlet is predominantly made up of a small community, a primary school, various farms and an electrical substation. The community had a population of 354 people in 2001.The wayside cross, probably medieval, was restored 1919. Only the base is original, a roughly hewn cube-shaped block 75 cm wide and 60 cm deep; this stands on stone plinth which has an inscription stating that it was restored to commemorate peace, 1919; and it carries a cross 1 metre high. (Henry Taylor Ancient Crosses and Holy Wells 1906. It is located near the village of Hutton. Other nearby communities include the village of New Longton. Howick was a civil parish from 1866 until 1 April 1934, when it was absorbed into the parish of Penwortham. Howick parish was part of Preston Rural District. The former parish name survives in Howick C E School, the Hutton and Howick Women's Institute (the oldest in Lancashire, founded by suffragette Edith Rigby) and the former railway station. Hutton and Howick railway station opened on 1 December 1897, on the Preston to Southport railway line. It was renamed New Longton and Hutton on 3 November 1934 and closed, along with the line, on 7 September 1964.

Lea Road railway station ( LEE-ə) was on the Preston and Wyre Joint Railway in the parish of Lea and Cottam in Preston, Lancashire, England. It opened in 1842, and closed on 2 May 1938.Lea Road was located adjacent to the site of the proposed Cottam railway station.

Cottam Parkway is a proposed railway station to the west of Preston, England. The proposed station would serve existing and new developments in the Lea civil parish. As part of the original Preston Local Plan, the station would have been constructed in 2022/23 adjacent to the Preston Western Distributor Road, which will link to the M55 motorway. In the amended plan the Cottam station looked set to be removed because of uncertainty over its location. Preston was shortlisted for the Transforming City Fund, including a proposal to fund Cottam railway station. It is now planned to submit a planning application in 2022, which, if successful, could lead to an opening in 2024 or 2025.The plan is to locate it on the Preston to Blackpool section. Construction may have required the closure of the neighbouring Salwick railway station, as referred to in Page 38 of the Central Lancashire Highways and Transport Masterplan.In December 2020 Lancashire County Council agreed to acquire land to assist with the construction of the station and access roads. LCC submitted a planning application in October 2022.
