Raccoon Island is an island on Lake Hopatcong in New Jersey, comprising about 50 acres (20 ha) with mixed private homes and lots. It is part of Jefferson Township, in Morris County, New Jersey. Seasonal (April–October), limited scheduled ferry service provides access to the island by car or light truck. With this limited accessibility, few people live year-round on the island, but during the summer months many families from the surrounding area temporarily "relocate" and commute to their work from there. The homes range from small cottages that were built from the 1880s onwards to more contemporary and remodeled homes with sizable lots. There is no public land on the island. In the late 19th century, paddle-wheel boats used to provide transportation links from mainland railway stations to resort hotels and campsites on the island. It was a summer tourist destination for New York City residents (45 miles (72 km) east) before expanded auto and boat transportation made more exotic travel feasible.

Lake Hopatcong is the largest freshwater body in New Jersey, United States, about 4 square miles (10 km2) in area. Located 30 miles (48 km) from the Delaware River and 40 miles (64 km) from Manhattan, New York City, the lake forms part of the border between Sussex and Morris counties in the state's northern highlands region. Lake Hopatcong was produced by damming and flooding of two ponds, known as the Great Pond and Little Pond, and the Musconetcong River, its natural outlet. Historically known as a resort lake for vacationing New Yorkers, it is now a mostly suburban residential lake.

Lake Hopatcong is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Jefferson Township, Morris County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. It includes communities on the northeast side of Lake Hopatcong, the largest freshwater body in the state. Lakefront communities in the CDP include Espanong, Prospect Point, Raccoon Island, and Woodport, and inland communities include Hurdtown, Tierneys Corner, and Berkshire Valley. The CDP is bordered to the west, across the lake, by the borough of Hopatcong in Sussex County, and to the south it is bordered by Mount Arlington in Roxbury Township and by the Lower Berkshire Valley CDP. Lake Shawnee is in the northeast part of the CDP. New Jersey Route 15 passes through the eastern side of the Lake Hopatcong CDP, leading south 4 miles (6 km) to Interstate 80 in Wharton and north 6 miles (10 km) to Sparta. The community was first listed as a CDP prior to the 2020 census.

As of the 2020 United States census, the borough's population was 14,362, a decrease of 785 (−5.2%) from the 2010 census count of 15,147, which in turn reflected a decline of 741 (−4.7%) from the 15,888 counted in the 2000 census.

Lookout Mountain is a mountain in Sussex County, New Jersey. The summit rises to 1,165 feet (355 m), and is located in the Borough of Hopatcong, overlooking the River Styx, a bay of Lake Hopatcong. It is part of the New York–New Jersey Highlands of the Appalachian Mountains.

The Mount Arlington School District is a community public school district that serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade from Mount Arlington, in Morris County, New Jersey, United States.As of the 2018–19 school year, the district, comprising two schools, had an enrollment of 362 students and 35.9 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student–teacher ratio of 10.1:1.The district is classified by the New Jersey Department of Education as being in District Factor Group "GH", the third-highest of eight groupings. Lake Shawnee is a small 83-acre (34 ha) private Lake located in Jefferson Township, New Jersey, United States. Its outsourcing is Beaver Brook, which flows into Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey's largest lake. Lake Shawnee and its watershed are the headwaters of the Musconetcong River watershed. The Lake Shawnee Reservation, as it is known, was developed in 1946 by the Arthur D. Crane Company of Sparta, real estate developers, which incorporated the Lake Shawnee Club and began selling home sites on the Lake many of which were originally summer homes. By 1948, the first two homes were built and during the next 15 years the Club reached its peak of 562 resident members. The clubhouse was then constructed and First Beach, not included in the original deeds, was subsequently purchased from the Crane Company with funds raised from within the membership. Carl Peterson was instrumental in developing the Third Beach area and was known as Mr. Shawnee among local residents.The Lake Shawnee dam was damaged during a storm in March 2010. The dam had already been under pressure by a snowy winter, causing rising water levels.In 2016, there was an effort to change the mailing address from a Wharton, New Jersey 07885 ZIP code, to a Lake Hopatcong 07849 ZIP code. The effort was narrowly defeated. In 2026, a new effort will be made to change the mailing address ZIP code to 07849.

The Lotta Crabtree Cottage (1885-86) is a Shingle style house in the Breslin Park neighborhood of Mount Arlington, New Jersey. Designed by the noted Philadelphia architect Frank Furness, it is a contributing property in Mount Arlington Historic District.Lotta Crabtree (1847–1924) was an American actress and comedian, best known for her Western roles.: 260  Furness designed the Breslin Hotel (1886, burned 1948) – a 175-room resort hotel built on a hill overlooking Lake Hopatcong – along with a number of summer cottages surrounding it.: 258  A popular celebrity, Crabtree "was given this house as part of promotion for the Breslin Hotel.": 260  She named it "Attol Tryst" ("Lotta" spelled backward), and summered there for 20 years.The 18-room cottage sits on land that slopes down to Van Every Cove. It is 2-1/2 stories on the land side and 3-1/2 on the lake side. The exterior features Furness's "upside-down" chimneys, with corbels that flare outward near the top. An expansive porch/piazza, including a semi-circular section that traces the curve of the parlor, wraps around three sides of the house.: 260  The interior features Aesthetic Movement details characteristic of Furness, including a fireplace flanked by terra cotta dog-faced beasts.: 261  The billiard room's massive stone fireplace once featured a mosaic that spelled out "18 - LOTTA - 86" in gemstones.

The Lake Hopatcong Yacht Club is a private yacht club located in Mount Arlington, Morris County, New Jersey, United States, in the northwestern part of New Jersey, on the small peninsula of Bertrand Island along the state's largest lake, Lake Hopatcong. The club is non-profit, and governed by a slate of volunteers, elected by its members. The organization features an active sailing and social schedule, with an emphasis on activities for the entire family.
