Alternative Middle Years at James Martin School is a historic middle school located in the Port Richmond neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is part of the School District of Philadelphia. The building was built in 1894–1896, and expanded in 1922. It is a three-story, five-bay, stone building on a raised basement in the Romanesque style. It features portholes above the central three bays.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

Our Lady Help of Christians (German) is a historic Catholic church at the corner of East Allegheny Avenue and Gaul Street in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and serves the German-speaking population in the area. The parish was founded in 1885 and the church was constructed in 1898. The parish was merged with Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary church in 2016, and the two churches located one block away from each other operated until Our Lady Help of Christians was closed on June 4, 2018. Leading up to its closure, the Church struggled financially, with under 300 attendees per weekend and substantial deferred maintenance costs. As of 2021, the church building remains vacant but intact. Additional vacant components of the property include a rectory, convent, and school building.

Frankford Junction is a railroad junction, and former junction station, located on the border between the Harrowgate neighborhood of Philadelphia and Frankford, Philadelphia. At the junction, the 4-track Northeast Corridor line from Trenton connects with the 2-track Atlantic City Line from Atlantic City in the northeastern portion of Philadelphia about 2.9 miles (4.7 km) northeast of North Philadelphia station. It lies near the intersection of Frankford Avenue and Butler Street, to the west of the interchange between Interstate 95 and the approach to the Betsy Ross Bridge. George L. Horn School is a historic school building located in the Harrowgate neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1902–1904, and is a three-story, five-bay, ashlar stone building in the Late Gothic Revival style. It features terra cotta and granite trim and a steeply pitched gable roof.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. For a time the school was known as the Sheridan West Academy before being closed in 2013.

Charles Carroll High School was a public high school located in the Port Richmond section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. Its student body was mostly white, black, and latino. The school was closed in 2013 as part of Philadelphia's shutdown of 23 district-run schools. Displaced students were enrolled in Penn Treaty, Kensington International Business High School, Kensington Health Sciences Academy, and Kensington Urban Education Academy.

Richmond Elementary School is a historic elementary school located in the Port Richmond neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is part of the School District of Philadelphia. The building was designed by Irwin T. Catharine and built in 1928–1929. It is a three-story, nine-bay, brick building on a raised basement in the Late Gothic Revival style. It features a projecting stone entryway with Tudor arch, stone beltcourse and cornice, and a crenellated parapet.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.The school's hierarchy structure is led with Principal Mrs. Susan Rozanski. Richmond School is a K to 5th grade school. The school has the following mission statement; "Richmond Elementary School recognizes that each child is an individual; that all children are creative; that all children need to succeed. Therefore, Richmond School respects the individual needs of children; fosters a caring and creative environment; and emphasizes the social, emotional, physical, intellectual development of each child". Richmond school achieves this by maintaining class sizes between 20 and 30 students. The school contains an annex building titled the portable. This building houses one of the kindergarten classes. This annex is on site in the playground. The demographics of the school are as follows: 54% male, 46% female, with 56% white or caucasian students, 24% Hispanic students and 20% African American students.

On May 12, 2015, an Amtrak Northeast Regional train from Washington, D.C. bound for New York City derailed and wrecked on the Northeast Corridor near the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Of 238 passengers and 5 crew on board, 8 were killed and over 200 injured, 11 critically. The train was traveling at 102 mph (164 km/h) in a 50 mph (80 km/h) zone of curved tracks when it derailed.Some of the passengers had to be extricated from the wrecked cars. Many of the passengers and local residents helped first responders during the rescue operation. Five local hospitals treated the injured. The derailment disrupted train service for several days.The National Transportation Safety Board determined that the derailment was caused by the train's engineer (driver) becoming distracted by other radio transmissions and losing situational awareness, and said that it would have been prevented by positive train control, a computerized speed-limiting system that was operational elsewhere on the Northeast Corridor, but whose activation at the wreck site had been delayed due to regulatory requirements. The track in question was also not equipped with ATC (automatic train control), an older and simpler system that had been operational for years on the southbound track of the curve at which the derailment occurred, and that also would have limited the train's speed entering the curve. Shortly after the derailment, Amtrak completed ATC installation on the northbound track.The 2015 wreck was the deadliest on the Northeast Corridor since 1987, when 16 people died in a wreck near Baltimore.The train engineer, 32-year old Brandon Bostian, was arrested and charged with one count of causing a catastrophe, eight counts of involuntary manslaughter, and 238 counts of reckless endangerment. On March 4, 2022, a jury acquitted Bostian on all counts.
